Bryce Brentz went in the sandwich round to Boston but he wasn't worth a trip to recruit?

Congratulations to the kid and the family.

In case you aren't aware, his dad played football at State and we either didn't offer or didn't make an effort.

Sheesh

we saw him as an outfielder or an infielder one, and we already had too many of whatever we saw him as.

Anyone else think he could have helped us out this year? And for the record, he also pitched at MTSU.

From what I have heard, his family called Polk and they told him we were full at his position. Same thing happened with Todd MacInnis at USM, we gave Louis Coleman the run around and tried to force him to go to Meridian CC, and the same thing with Cole Gillaspie- another guy who was a first round pick from Wichita State and had a Dad that played at MSU.

Honestly, if you didn't come to the camp, and if you didn't sign with MSU quickly, and promise that you would come to MSU even if you were drafted, and had good grades, we weren't signing you. That's how Polk did it.

Polk I, I could honestly understand these tactics...but Polk II?? That is what ruined our program.

when you get down to it, baseball is about the players that you have on your team much moreso than how good your coach is or isn't. We had to compete with MLB for Palmeiro and I think Will Clark as well. So, he wasn't always the way he was at the end of his tenrure.

I'm not sure why Polk decided to do it that way. I think some of it has to do with him getting burned in the draft on guys like Pat Borders and Jay Bell, and some of it was his personality.

I think that he had felt like he had built us to a point where the top players would flock to us, and we didn't really have to go out to get them. But, the crazy thing is that when guys like Stephen Head would beg to get a look from us, we laughed in their face and treated them like crap.

I know guys that would go up to him and Raffo and say that they wanted to play at MSU- and would walk-on, and Polk would literally laugh in their faces and tell them to go to JUCO and then MAYBE we would let them walk-on. I had a big problem with how he treated some of our recruits- some who could have really helped us. Many of those people are/were life-long MSU people as well. I mean, would it really have hurt anything to let them walk-on? Especially pre-roster limit era college baseball. And then he comes out and says "I could never cut a kid". Very hypocritical in a sense. The truth is this- he didn't want to cut you if you sucked and he liked you.

And for the record-I like and respect Coach Polk.

Cohen is not perfect, but at least if you really want to go to MSU, he won't laugh in your face and will give you an opportunity to show what you can do. He will let you know that you have to earn your spot and that you may not make it, but at least he will give people a chance.

I mean, that's why you build tradition, so that you can use it to your advantage.

Yeah, he missed on this recruit. But so did every other coach in any major college conference. It's not like this was a Stephen Head or one of the guys who went to USM. This guy went to Middle freaking Tennessee St. </p>

While it's true that 'everybody else missed out on Brentz' very few other programs had the engraved invitation that we did to offer the guy a shot.

It's water under the bridge. It wasn't the first kid Polk missed on and I haven't given him credit for all the kids he got right. Cohen will miss some, too, I'm sure.

I like how we're bringing in larger numbers each year and seemingly trying to 'make room' for one more if he can help us.

Let's see how today's draft goes.

about how we recruit the state of Georgia, but we need to get to it. They had an unreal amount of HS kids taken in the first round.

I think every kid in Cobb County could have taken one out of Yankee Stadium before they hit puberty. If you had to pitch against them, you just sucked it up and realized you were about to give up close to twenty runs and no relief was coming in. It just wasn't worth wasting any other pitchers.

You let them walk-on because you never know when you might get a quality player. I wouldn't expect a first round guy, but even a solid SEC player is not out of the realm of possibility.

Plus, if they're on your team, they can't hurt you playing for someone else.

a couple of players from there this year- Adam Frazier and Evan Mitchell. Last year we got Matt Lane from there.

I agree with you wholeheartedly- we need to recruit there because there is obviously a ton of talent. And we're not all thaty far away.

As you can see, we are starting to recruit there, and are making some in-roads, but we need to get more from there in my opinion.

Butch has some connections there from his days at UGA.

from Meridian CC.

Followed by:
Daryl Norris
Taylor Stark- his stock has increased as a pitching prospect
Wes Rea
What the hell- Chase Lewallen
DeMarcus Henderson
CT Bradford

As far as current players:
Conner Powers will be drafted, of course.
Jaron Shepherd
Maybe Nick Vickerson

I really don't think we will lose any of our high school recruits if they are drafted. Norris is the most likely to go pro, probably followed by Lewallen. And those two I feel good about, except for obviously Lewallen who isn't coming, but I included him in the off chance that he does come to MSU at some point. I think we have to be worried about Jaron coming back. The rest, I'm not to worried about.

of couse unless he is drafted insanely low, which isn't likely. I forgot all about Dickerson....don't really feel good about him making it to campus either.

the "Polk would literally laugh in their faces" bit concerning walk-ons.

On two occassions Itook kids to his office to discuss walking on. Both times, Polk said sure. I have no pull whatsoever in the athletic dept and these kids weren't the sons of anybody special. Both were good players, not SEC quality, but good athletes nonetheless He let them walk on, one got cut quick and the other made it to the last round.

So my experience with Polk's programwas a little different from what you describe.

until he had already committed to MTSU. Even Tennessee didn't recruit him until he was committed to Middle and he played HS ball 10 miles from campus. I have read interviews where he talked about how special MSU is to his family, so you may be dead on that Polk don't want him.

You are right too, he was a decent pitcher at MT (Saturday starter last year) until he was injured.

One of the two would've gone as a little kid, but not when he was in HS. The other one didn't.

Polk was a lot of things, but he wasn't a jerkto 18yr olds.

After thinking about it for a day, I came to this conclusion:

That I would not fault Cohen for missing on a prospect because he's going wth numbers. He's doing what he can to bring it quantity so that guys that might be good can prove themselves.

On the other hand, my problem with Coach Polk was that he flatly refused to give them (and us) a shot.

Now I'm done.
