Heard this on Dan Patrick today and thought it was a good quesiton.

Will you be pulling for A-Rod to break Bond's record?

One other question, without looking it up, do you know the current record off the top of your head? They also asked that and I thought it was a pretty good question. I had no idea what it was, while old record was pretty much a magical number everyone knew.

A-Rod has been proven to be a fraud.

With Bonds, you at leas knew he was an ******* all along.

However, I still consider Hank the HR King.

because I want Albert Pujols to break it one day. And I just cross my fingers that Albert is never caught doing PED's.

Nothing against A-Rod at all, but logically, the fewer home runs he has, the easier it will be for Pujols to possibly pass him one day.

A lot of people just don't acknowledge Bonds out of spite. Right or wrong. Actually, some people don't consider Aaron the home run king because he got to play in the 162 game era whereas Ruth had to play in the 154 game era. Ruth is the anti-Barry Bonds. Everyone loved him, and he is a mythical figure the likes of Paul Bunyan.

So, here's how I feel about it- Ruth was the greatest home run hitter of all time. He was almost doubling the home run total of the second place guy. He out homered the entire Pittsburgh Pirates TEAM one year. He changed the game. And you look at his career, he did what he did in about 16 years, whereas Aaron did it in about 22 years or so, and it took Bonds about 22 years as well. Remember, Ruth lost some years while he was pitching. He had that very rare tape-measure home run ability- he could hit them 500 feet. Ruth had legendary home runs, such as the "called shot", which was in the World Series no less. Ruth also hit home runs in the World Series, and All-Star play. So, even though Ruth no longer holds the records, he was the greatest home run hitter of all time.

Oh, Bonds had 762 home runs.

You can only legitimately compare players to others in the same time period, and Ruth was leagues ahead of any other power hitter of his day, while Bonds was only barely the best power hitter of his era (though he still is #1). Just because Bonds (and Aaron) happened to hit a few more homers than Ruth doesn't mean Ruth isn't the greatest of all time.

Don't say that you hope he is <span style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: underline;">not doing them </span>and risk have the production suffer a la Big Papi if he is and stops.

He is 30, playing in an age where 35 is old again. He plays in a pitcher's park where balls that bounce off the wall would be in the10th row at Wrigley, GAB, Houston, Philly, and about 20 other bandboxes. He is a line-drive doubles hitter that has about 40 a year go astray. He has tiptoed the injury tight rope the last 6-7 years, and its bound to catch up with before its all said and done. The thought makes me sick at my stomach, but the only way he see's 700, is to play the 4-5 years of his career as a DH. And I think he takes to much pride in his defense to retire the glove. My guess is he is going to have maybe 6 more years where he is going to average maybe 40, giving him somewhere in the 640 range. He peddles around another 2-3 years and winds up with about 200 more than Stan the Man. Somewhere in the 675 range.

and will be in the running, though I do think Arod if he stays healthy will smash the record. He is only a 160+ away now, and still has 7 years left on his contract. Like I said though, he has to stay healthy

Bonds is the king. You can chastise me all you want, but Bonds is the home run king, just give the man credit. Everybody here knows that most players used PED's during that time and he hit most of his bombs against guys that used them, it isn't that hard to understand. Although I am also rooting for Big Al to break the record instead of A-Rod, I think A-Rod's 800+ will be too much. I just don't understand why people want to stone everybody that used Roids (they weren't illegal when they used them), and don't tell me that Ruth or Aaron or any of the legends of the game wouldn't have used them if they had the chance, because yes the *+%% they would, and you know it.

Not illegal??? I believe they were are and will be illegal.

Perhaps you meant against the baseball rules because they weren't specifically written into any list of banned substances or whatever. I don't suppose there is a rule on the books that prohibits you from carrying a pistol to the plate and shooting fielders before they catch or throw a ball you hit, but you probably can't do that. Point being, just because there wasn't a rule doesn't make it OK to do it.

there was one year...maybe '29 where 1 out of every 6 homeruns hit in the AL was Ruth's... he had other years with typical sick numbers like that..

he also owns the all time slugging average that is 57 points higher than #2... and #2 would be none other than Ted Williams...

there was an 8 year stretch that he led the league in walks 7 years... and guess who was batting behind him every time?... yep... Lou Gerigh... that stat along with the others leaves no question that he was also the most feared batter to ever step into the box

He's at 389 now and is only 30 years old. He's averaged 40.67 HRs per year... so let's assume he keeps that pace up until he's 33 and then slowly erodes the rest of his career, ending at the age of 38. Obviously, if he plays until he's 42, he'll have a shot.

I think he can mantain your numbers through 2017ish playing everyday at 1st. But that is the point to where taking 9 innings of groundballs, shuffling side to side, occasionally, diving, is going to get his legs, taking away his power. I know Mcgwires situation was different (we hope), but he hit like 65 hr's in 99, but then in 2000 his knee's left him and next thing you know, Kerry Robinson is pinch hitting for him in what would have been his final AB. It can go that quick for older players, especially sluggers. I think he has the will and drive to play till he 45, but he can not play the field with the wear and tear he puts on his body now until he is 40 and hope to maintain the pace he is on now.

It is explicitly against the rules of the game, but unless you are intentionally tilting the outcome of the game in order to win your bet, then wagering has no impact on the game. He is 30, playing in an age where 35 is old again. He plays in a pitcher's park where balls that bounce off the wall would be in the10th row at Wrigley, GAB, Houston, Philly, and about 20 other bandboxes. He is a line-drive doubles hitter that has about 40 a year go astray. He has tiptoed the injury tight rope the last 6-7 years, and its bound to catch up with before its all said and done. The thought makes me sick at my stomach, but the only way he see's 700, is to play the 4-5 years of his career as a DH. And I think he takes to much pride in his defense to retire the glove. My guess is he is going to have maybe 6 more years where he is going to average maybe 40, giving him somewhere in the 640 range. He peddles around another 2-3 years and winds up with about 200 more than Stan the Man. Somewhere in the 675 range.

And yes, it would take a power surge for him to do it, but I don't think that's something that's just totally out of the realm of possibility for him either.

I wouldn't be shocked if he goes to the AL at some point to DH- possibly Kansas City where his family took root after leaving the Dominican.

I'm certainly pulling for him to do it.
