Padres really got screwed by the umps. No dog in this fight, but the game should be tied now. Padre fans must be sick.

I assume you mean the bad called strike for a K. I didn't watch. Why should it have been tied?

Padres would have had bases loaded and no outs. Slow roller to Swanson, gets the out at first. Run scores and it's 2nd and 3rd one out. Fly ball to deep center field ties the game. Padres would still have a runner at 2nd with two outs and a tie game. Instead the fly ball to center ends the game. Thankfully teams can challenge balls/strikes next year.

Stankees up 4-0 thanks to the Red Sux poor defense.

I like baseball just not either of these teams.

Schlittler is throwing a gem for the NY Yankees against the Red Sox, in Game 3 of the Wild Card series.

The Detroit - Seattle 1st game has been really entertaining. Playoff baseball is a different beast

Detroit just took a 3-2 lead in the top the 11th on a ball that barely made it out of the infield (broken bat; slowly hit, but perfectly placed up the middle), to plate the runner from 2nd base.

G2 of the Seattle - Detroit series is another thriller.

The Mariners were up 2-0 on 2 solo HRs. Then in the top of the 8th, Detroit tied it (2 on, and ?? hit a double). So the Mariners come right back and go double, double, to take a 3-2 lead.

Mariners still at bat in the bottom of the 8th, 1st & 3rd, 1 out,, Suarez at bat.

Edit: Suarez grounds to 3rd, and the 3rd baseman throws home and gets the runner at the plate. Now 2 out, men on 1st & 2nd, and the Tigers are making a pitching change

Mariners win G2, 3-2, so the series is tied, 1-1.

I think Seattle's fans over G1 & G2 gave the Phillies fans at Citizen Bank Park a run for the title of loudest home fans in the playoffs.

Good for the Cubs. Down 2-0 in the NLDS, they won G3, 4-3, at home. Some good plays by both teams in the game.

I didn't watch Dodgers @ Brewers last night but this morning I saw a replay of the Brewers routine 8-6-2 double play to end an inning. The Brewers lost but I'd still like to see them take the series.

hmm, I watched this game early, and the Blue Jays were looking good. So much for that. Mariners take a 3-2 lead.

Babe Ruth was reincarnated as a Japanese baseball player

Idle thought: there have been a lot of players who could have been great pitcher-hitters had there been a DH rule when they played. Smoky Joe Wood, Warren Spahn, Ken Brett, Bob Gibson.

Well that is a little speculative. If that were the case. Why weren’t more pitchers used as the DH on the first place since its inception?

There were just too many other bats that just are better hitters.

Let’s look at Spahn's best hitting season 1958. .333 with 2 homers .844 OPS!!!. But you had Joe Adcock, Felix mantilla and Andy Pafko on the bench platooning. I would think they would be the DH instead. Adcock probably hits 30 homer that year instead of 19. Spahn isn’t hitting more than 8 more if we project PA around 450 to 500 for each. they had Lew Burdette who wasn't a bad hitting pitcher either

Sphan's career .194 AVG .520 OPS he was good for 1-2 homer a year per 100-110 PA

Ohtani without pitching is the one of the best offensive threats around much more so than any pitcher ever. He just happens to be a pretty good pitcher as well. Its because of the DH he is slotted there, for a better defensive player obviously. But with no DH he's is playing LF or RF you don't keep that bat on the bench and the discussion just becomes.. is he Babe Ruth 2.0

It is a bit of a curious thought experiment though.

Ken Brett would be the interesting case because he moves to a few teams that had the DH but he never hit for any of them, in that role, the question would be why if he was such a good hitting pitcher.

He played with the White sox in 76 where it appears they tried it. Pat Kelly was the normal DH batted .254 with an ops of .735 Brett was given 12 AB's and got 1 hit maybe as a pinch hitter, who knows, I would have to look at retrosheet to get the true story. but they still gave him 12 ABs

Brett then played for White Sox and Angles in 77 then the angles in 78 then the dodgers in 79 where he batted .273 3 for 11 then went to the royals in 80-81 at the end of his career didnt hit in any of these stopovers

white sox and angles DH in 77? Oscar Gamble and Don Baylor
Angles DH in 78? Don Baylor
Royals DH in 80-81 Hal Mcrae

all 3 of those guys known for being good DH's . So I have to think teams would have had just better hitter available if the DH was in place rather than trotting out a decent hitting pitcher in that slot. I would also venture to say teams would roster their team as such if the DH were in place rather than carry an extra pitcher.

Take the early 70's cardinals with Bob Gibson they already had the likes of Ted Simmons on the bench early in his career (behind Joe Torre and and Tim McCarver maybe he gets more ABs than he did if the DH was in place) and they had Bill White at the tail end of his career whose career might have been extended if the DH were in place I think both of those guys are in the lineup instead of Gibby
