This is a great hire. The younger generation will love having a NBA all-star and teammate of Lebron come sit in their living room and explain to them how they plan on being used at UK. Mason and his dad know that UK is looking at bringing in 3 point guards. Mason knows that he is the long term project and the other guards will be the primary and backup point guard.

That's exactly why I just asked the question about whether this should be considered an upgrade or downgrade. I legitimately don't know.
The biggest difference is that Mo Williams actually had success in the NBA, Jason Hart did not. I had to look up Jason Hart when he was first hired because I couldn't remember who he was. Mo Williams has immediate name recognition, at least for me.

Smells of desperation.

Can’t make this stuff up.

Combined Head coaching winning % at two stops (Jackson State and Alabama State) - 39%.

Add the recently hired Brown as basketball “GM”who was “video coordinator” with Pope at BYU…..

Why not hire a GM role from Nike, NBA team or someone with Sport Agent experience (assuming legal).

Stupid is what stupid does.

Yeah we just hired a no body father to get his son to commit.

He’s not a well known name and former player in the NBA with coaching experience or anything.

Most uneducated fanbase on planet earth.. 🤣🤣🤣
Several have wanted him to fail since day one as they didn't want him hired and want to tell everybody how right they were. Yes, there are grown adults that actually act like this.

I dont love this. Dont love this package deal with a recruit who might be here for a year, with his dad coaching who might also only be here for a year if Pope gets fired. We are either getting a coach who isnt good enough on merits, or a player who isnt. I bet one seems to be carrying the other.

This feels like a hail Mary pass that never made it to the end zone.

But im willing to change my stance, hope im proven wring.
Everybody in the CBB world knows what's happening. This dude was 8th, 8th, 4th, 5th, 2nd and 5th in conference finishes at freaking Alabama St and Jackson St. His previous experience to those head coaching jobs was as an assistant at Cal Northridge. Here's the question you have to ask yourself...Would this dude be hired if he didn't have a 4-star kid? The obvious answer is no. Now, if his kid were Michael Porter (Cuonzo hired his dad when he inked him) then I could see it. But man, this is desperation personified.

This isn't that. Mo Williams played 14 years in the NBA, made the All Star Team and won an NBA Championship. He is the catch not his son, this type of high profile NBA Career helps in the recruiting circles. Now let's see who he can land for us in the Portal. Could Jamal Crawford be next? I know some say that was only rumors but I believe it to be more than that and there is interest.
How did it help him at Alabama St and Jackson St? I think this is vastly overrated. I know this is going to sound shocking, but this seems like a massive overreaction from Pope. Mo Williams has never once proven to be an elite college recruiter.

All of you guys talking about Mo's coaching record have missed the boat. He's not going to be a head coach. He's going to recruit and develop players. Kenny Payne is a great example of a guy who is awesome with player relationships and getting the best out of them, but sucked as a head coach. I'm happy to give the guy a chance.
Who has Mo Williams developed? Who has he recruited?

Yeah, cause you know that Alabama St. and Jackson St. are always loaded with 5-Star talent...

For the people who follow recruiting more than me, is this an upgrade or downgrade from what we had? I know who Mo is, but do recruits care? Genuine question.
They didn't seem to at Alabama St and Jackson St, where he won at about a 45% clip. He's never, ever recruited to a P5 school. Ever. And now we're gonna try to sell him as a recruiter? Can't make this stuff up.

I know most prefer to be negative and look at this as the opposite because of the pope stuff but I’m pretty sure this was a “I want to hire the coach but he wants to coach his son so we get his son too” type deal instead of the negative “we hire the father so we can get the kid” situation.

Some people here will complain about anything and everything.

Sheesh.

considering CMP is in a lame duck year and facing the biggest challenge in the world just to keep his job for another season ..... I'd personally say getting Mo here is a win and a nice bonus as well.

Why some people can't wait and see what he can do to help Pope's shaky recruiting .... there's definitely got to be improvement needed there. So how in the HELL is this not a positive step forward for great development and a hopeful sign for quick improvement?

Keep the guns holstered and the pitchforks & torches set aside for a a few minutes?

Or at least try to ?

give him a shot, Pope needs the help.
