Not only played but played 10 years. Won a title. Multiple All Star. Figured he learned a few things. He’s coached. Has kids so he can relate. NBA teams wanted him to assist but some on Rafters know better. Guys like he and Rod Strickland are guard whisperers . What guard recruit wouldn’t want to learn under his tutelage.

But some basement dwelling negative Rafters “ experts” know better? Makes me laugh.

Glad to have both of them!
Who has Mo Williams developed? Guard whisper? Source?

@JHannibalSmith has a great basketball mind. Notice he was in here a bit ago. Plus, he’s a HOMEBOY! What do you think of this hire, brother?!
He’s a solid choice, IMO. I think he’s Pope’s best hire so far. I’m basing my opinion on him as a player & a person more so than his time at Jackson St., though. He has the criteria to be a good coach, IMO. He was a cerebral PG & a team leader at the highest level. He understands the game as well as most anyone & he has championship experience. That’s a nice start.

For years, HS players have spoken highly of him at camps & he seems to be well respected on the circuit. Not everyone is cut out to be a HC, so, I don’t think he’s a bad hire just bc he didn’t win at JSU. I can’t remember anyone besides Deion Sanders who was able to recruit legit talent to JSU or any other tiny school for basketball or football.

I’d prefer a more experienced guy to be lead recruiter, but, he’d be a hell of a #2 guy, IMO. I’m pretty optimistic about his potential ability to develop our guards & really teach them how to play. With Pope’s system relying heavily on perimeter shooting & ball movement, I like the idea of an all-star level, high IQ PG who has seen it all, helping out. Assuming that Pope gets guys who actually fit the system this time, lol. And, he’s still pretty young in coaching terms & should be able to relate to recruits.

I know some NBA teams have been showing interest in him, too. I think ppl are just so down on Pope that they don’t think anything he does will work. I’m pretty disappointed, too. But, I can definitely see the value in a guy like Mo.

Pope could’ve done a lot worse. But, he needs to really nail the other hire. Get an established closer as lead recruiter with Mo as the #2 or #3 guy & I’d be happy. But, it’s also possible that Mo kills it with the UK brand & becomes an elite recruiter. He hasn’t proven anything yet. But, I think the possibility is there for him to be a great hire. Fingers are crossed, lol. And, ty for the kind words, brother.

Anyone criticizing this hire is not very knowledgeable about basketball and how it works TODAY. The guy was hired for his experience and connects especially with NBA agents. It is a very good START. Still a couple of critical hires to make. It's pretty obvious to me at least Pope was talking to him for a while and the kid committed because he knew his dad was coming here not the other way around as the Legion of the Miserable on here suggests

Love having an NBA all Star guard on the staff. Ask John Wall or Brandon Knight about having a similar type guy named Strickland coaching them at UK. Losing him was a big loss.

Don’t know what type Tyler Ulis is but he might be a good addition to the staff?

Should have kept Antiqua as he knew all the UK contacts.

There's literally nothing about this hire that's bad. Why can't the people that clamored for Pope to rebuild his coaching staff actually be happy that Pope IS rebuilding his coaching staff? This looks like a very good hire but some people have no clue whatsoever and are just unhappy people, no matter what. I really do hope players, recruits and other coaching staffs never read this board. I'd use it against us in a heartbeat! I think Cal called them "Bennies". I call most of them Karens.

Likely turned out it was just fake crap. It never made sense because I have seen zero connection between Stokes and Williams.
It was saying the connection was with Willam’s to Crawford to Stokes. Again I have no FN clue just going to wait probably until the Nike Hoop Summitt and go ok good that’s out of the way knew how this would go. He needs to turn up the heat on Miika Muirren him and Stokes are 3 and 5 in 2027 mock draft two pieces of talent sitting here.

This thread is weird. I believe we should move on from Pope 100% but that isn't happening. This is an objective good hire. Y'all talking about an assistant coaches W/L record is silly i could have sworn I saw a bunch of posts who wanted Coach Antigua back let's see what his head coaching record is.....

23–55 (.295)
Most wanted Antigua back because he has proven he can recruit not because of coaching.

Its a low risk gamble that can pay off big without hurting much if it doesnt pan out. I dont think he took the job as the lead recruit even tho he has instant nba credibility, but to help guard development and locker room stability. Players will relate to him, and importantly keep egos in check. Remember rumor was the team fought before louisville game.

Some of you reading into this entirely too much.

Exactly hire Stokes mom as a secretary if you're going to make this kind of hire.
What's wrong with this hire? I think it's a great hire and we get a 4 star PG as a bonus!
Everybody was screaming to change the coaching staff and to have depth at PG. Well...Pope took care of some of that with one swoop. And of course, people still gripin on here!

This is a can of worms I don't know if you want to open if your mark Pope.

Now you have to play his son or deal with that ********.

The good things about it is you might get LeBron come around or something and that might help you with recruiting maybe. I believe he's pretty tight with LeBron.

Everybody knows who Mo Williams is. So you got that going for you. He played late enough 2016 that people know the name.

I don't know what this dude's personality is though and if that's going to job or not with Mark Pope. Especially if you ain't playing his son when he wants you to. 🏌️

Grade: B-
He needed to do something to switch things up and this is definitely switching things up.
You might be bringing something you don't want though.

But anything with name recognition might help you on the recruiting trail where you ain't been able to get nobody so I say you know what:

go for it.

You only got one year and one more try you better make it worth it.

i dont know about that. i mean by bring in mo williams and his son you basically are locked at having him as your back up PG. hard to see anyone in the portal coming now to be a back up to whoever we get as a starter. which means you have a lower ranked freshman needing to play 10-15 minutes a game.

if its a win or else year for pope is that the best case scenario? if landing mo williams brings in a flood of high impact guys this year sure that is a trade off worth making, but if the doesnt. idk.

👀 Did we just get a hint?!

Mississippi State star PG Josh Hubbard just reposted Mason Williams’ commitment post on IG… 👀🔥

Coincidence? Or is something brewing in Lexington? 🐐

This isn't that. Mo Williams played 14 years in the NBA, made the All Star Team and won an NBA Championship. He is the catch not his son, this type of high profile NBA Career helps in the recruiting circles.

This is actually what I was hoping for when I heard his son committed. The kid isn't a slouch by any means, but his dad has the accolades already.

People don't understand how deals are put together, and the FOTM can't reason anyway. The negotiations for MW to be coach were dependent on his son getting to come with him, not the other way around. How thick do people have to be to not understand that?

Some miserable f'n people in this thread.
This is a terrific hire, if you can't see that, you don't get how this works.
Coaching is hard, being an assistant, is so much easier to do.
But Mo is being brought in for recruiting. Y'all crap on Pope for his recruiting misses, well, he's doing something about it and you guys still complain.
IMO, if you think Mo is a sh*t hire, you should be happy, you want Pope to fail, so this should work out well for you.
Give it a rest.

Well said . There is a reason this board is known as the FOM Fellowship of the Miserable.
