U.S.'mother of all bombs' killed 36 Islamic State militants in Afghanistan

As many as 36 suspected Islamic State militants were killed in Afghanistan when the United States dropped "the mother of all bombs," its largest non-nuclear device ever unleashed in combat, the Afghan defense ministry said on Friday.

Thursday's strike came as U.S. President Donald Trump dispatches his first high-level delegation to Kabul, amid uncertainty about his plans for the nearly 9,000 American troops stationed in Afghanistan.

The deaths have not been independently verified, but ministry spokesman Dawlat Waziri said no civilians were harmed in the massive blast that targeted a network of caves and tunnels.

"No civilian has been hurt and only the base, which Daesh used to launch attacks in other parts of the province, was destroyed," Waziri said in a statement.

He was using an Arabic term that refers to Islamic State, which has established a small stronghold in eastern Afghanistan and launched deadly attacks on the capital, Kabul.

The 21,600-pound (9,797-kg) GBU-43 bomb, which has 11 tons of explosives, was dropped from a MC-130 aircraft in the Achin district of the eastern province of Nangarhar, bordering Pakistan, Pentagon spokesman Adam Stump said on Thursday.

The device, also known as the "mother of all bombs," is a GPS-guided munition that had never before been used in combat since its first test in 2003, when it produced a mushroom cloud visible from 20 miles (32 km) away.

Former Afghan president Hamid Karzai condemned the use of the weapon on Afghan soil.

"This is not the war on terror, but the inhuman and most brutal misuse of our country as testing ground for new and dangerous weapons," he said on social media network Twitter.

At a village about 3 miles (5 km) from the remote, mountainous area where the bomb was dropped, homes and shops appeared unaffected by the blast, a Reuters witness said.

Residents said they saw militants climbing up and down the mountain every day, making occasional visits to the village.

"They were Arabs, Pakistanis, Chinese and local insurgents coming to buy from shops in the bazaar," said resident Raz Mohammad.

On Friday, the village was swarming with Afghan and international troops, as helicopters and other aircraft flew overhead.

The strike was part of a joint operation between Afghan and international troops, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani's office said in a statement.

"Afghan and foreign troops closely coordinated this operation and were extra cautious to avoid any civilian casualties," it said.

American officials said the bomb had been positioned for possible use in Afghanistan for "some time" since the administration of former president Barack Obama.

The United States has steadily intensified its air campaign against Islamic State and Taliban militants in Afghanistan, with the Air Force deploying nearly 500 weapons in the first three months of 2017, up from 300 in the corresponding 2016 period.

Now you libs are concerned about fiscal matters. Go away, come back and play another day.

When has anybody not been concerned with fiscal matters?

What I see on this board daily is quite frankly ridiculous. GOP and Dems both have always been concerned about national security, they have always been concerned about fiscal matters, they just have different philosophies on how to address those things.

To not recognize that is foolish.

But we have to cut school lunches!

I thought it was the responsibility of Parents to feed their Children lunch or at least send them to school with something to eat? My Mom packed our lunches when I was a little shaver, she didn't ask the taxpayers to feed us.

We pay the Government on the other hand to make sure we are protected from foreign Terrorists trying to kill us. I'll pay Uncle Sam to do that because I can't fight terrorists on my own, but I can feed my own kids their lunch.

What do those kids who get "school lunches" eat during Summer?

Lump everyone together? I thought that was a major complaint from the right? I think anyone not concerned about fiscal responsibility with the debt where it is, doesn't understand anything about economics. But there are many ways to balance budgets, and spend, and cut spending. A $15m bomb used to kill 36 militants and (possibly?) destroy one complex? If it's the only way it could have been done, than so be it....the chiefs know more than I....but if it's just a 15m show to make all of you "badasses" balls tingle? That's a little much.

I don't recognize it. At all. Libs have no concern over deficit nor debt. Only taxation and wealth redistribution.
More of that "us versus them" bs. Most of you are so invested in this political rhetoric, I think you've lost the ability to think for yourself now.

Not true at all ... in fact the last time we had a balanced budget was under Clinton, and deficit spending decreased under Obama.

It seems the GOP is completely unconcerned about deficit or debt ... they cut taxes, and then start expensive wars without thinking of how to pay for it.

I didn't use Republican/Democrat. I used liberal/conservative. Democrats are very liberal. Republicans are not all that conservative.

You may have accidentally hit upon the solution. Make the terrorists eat Mrs. Obama menu of school lunches. Estimated 70% of those offerings go into the trash can. Terrorist would join the party of conservatives after one term of that punishment. One week may be ample punishment.

$436 K per person killed.
That is quite a bargain compared to risking special forces lives. Those guys are worth 2-3 million alone just in training. Trump is a pretty thrifty guy and making America great spending pennies on the dollar. Thanks for doing the research that proved Trumps winning.

You probably beat off every time you see a war vet in a wheelchair with both legs gone taking his young daughter to school so she can get her free lunch. What a POS you are.

Not true at all. We believe the spending cuts should come from the biggest slice of the pie, where we are spending most of our money.
You believe in sending someone else off to fight and die on the cheap so you can feel good about helping lazy people like your parents were while you run your dicksucker on the internet all day.

Those sexist 'mother' bombs cost too much. ISIS has been marginalized, so we shouldn't bomb them. We should give them a couple of pallets of cash.

I'd rather never put boots on the ground ANYWHERE. I'd also not like to spend as much as a school on a bomb either. And Dave, you have no idea the relationship I have with vets at all. I donate as much as I can to Wounded Warriors due to the wishes of my best friend that dies at 34, and currently help my cousin almost daily deal with PTSD. I despise war, I despise bombs, but I understand the dark that exists. I'm idealistic. I'm sensitive. I'm a liberal *****. But I would NEVER disrespect the sacrifice others have made.

You would rather save school lunches than give our military weapons that save soldiers lives, but please tell me how much you respect their sacrifices. You are all talk.

OK...I'll go with this new theme being expressed now by many Leftists on this board. I'll join you. We all now are for cutting spending and balancing budgets. Hallelujah!!!!!

So let's share some ideas on what we're going to cut. How much less do we reduce spending to get this budget in balance? We're not cutting any more from the Military, plenty of that went on under Obama while the rest of the budget exploded despite your claim in this post.

So now they should get the increases that were spread around the past 8 years throuought the rest of the bureaucracy and we're just going to start whacking all the rest of the waste right?

Let's hear it from you Leftists...what do you want to cut to get this budget in balance? There isn't one thing I'll disagree with you on outside of the Military...because we live in a dangerous world where people are trying to kill us.

They're not the problem with unneeded spending. And we don't have a revenue problem either so we don't need to raise taxes. We had record revenues last year. We have a spending problem.

So what gets cut from your precious social programs and alphabet soup agency siphons?
