1. What a great night for football. Great stadium atmosphere. It's amazing how much better the experience is now compared to just a few years ago.

2. I now have offical confirmation that BrianTheDawg is not Meo Stansbury

3. Our defense is improved- no doubt. But it's still a "bend but dont break" defense. Georgia ran 38 plays in the 1st half- that's alot.

4. KJ Wright may not be able to catch, but he is going to get paid. He made hits and tackles from sideline to sideline. He IS the best defensive player we have. Mitchell are White are good, Wright is great.

5. Our DL gets cut too easily on passes- they fall like trees.

6. Coach34 say- "Give Ballard and Ralph 30 combined carries tomorrow and let's see what happens"- and, as usual, I'm right on. The coaching staff did what we needed to do offensively to win a big football game. It may be a little boring at times, but this is what <span style="text-decoration:underline">this</span> football team has to do to win against a good football team. And no- we aren't having trouble running the football. We just lined up and ran over them in the 2nd half, finally getting some push and creating some running lanes for the RB's. We stuck with it, and you guys saw the results. We aren't creating running lanes like we did last year to get more big plays, but Saturday was better. We did a good job in the 5-wides of running the QB draw alot because they didnt man-up on us. Looks like the plan is to throw it if they go man, run the draw vs zone. Also liked the addition of the QB counter- we overloaded one side and forced the defense to slide that way, and then countered with Ralph back to the weakside. That's going to work for us, because if they don't slide, we outnumber them to that side and can handoff to the motion man coming across. Great play design.

7. Ralph has a cannon for an arm, he just doesn't know how to use it. Any pass under 20 yards is the hardest throw for him to make. He is getting better, and is much improved from last year- but it is still going to be a struggle. You guys have to remember- he is an athlete playing QB- not a QB that's athletic- and there's a big difference in the two. One thing is for sure- he is our best chance to win football games- THIS SEASON. And we need to stick with him. Tyler needs reps, and he will get them when he can- but it's time to scrap the 2- QB system. I think the 2-QB system will work better next year once Tyler and our WR's have had another year of experience. Got to remember, other than Berry, we are still real young at WR.

8. The cheapshot was ******** and I love the way Mullen went out in the middle of the field and called out the Georgia sideline. He was pointing at Richt and them and just went ballistic. Players love playing for a guy like that.

9. Zach Smith is playing better than he was last year. He laid the wood to the Georgia WR and a couple of other times as well. He just struggles in man coverage. Got to take the bad with the good until we have somebody better to put there.

10. I hope we don't decide to get cute with Alcorn and start throwing it around to make the WR's happy. We need to continue to work on the run game to get some more cohesion between Ballard, Perkins, and the OL. Throw it some, but we need to continue letting these RB's grow into the offense. Let Tyler come in and sling it once we get up about 28. But knowing our staff, I have a feeling we will be cute and throw it around all day.

11. We are very well-coached. We may get cute at times, but we are very well-coached. We dont get out-schemed, and rarely are we unprepared for something. I hope like hell, we can keep the core of this staff together the next 2-3 years.

1. Yep, Ballard is starting to separate from the other backs.
2. Yep, this is a spread option team first. Has to be, and I had no problem with staying with Relf and finding a rhythm. We have to if we're going to be our best.
3. Because of 2, we rarely have problems having guys open in the passing game. Relf has just gotta hit them.
4. Our best play is in front of us.
5. Yep, game day atmosphere is awesome. Didn't know you were there?

Yeah Relf looked like his normal 30TD in a season self Saturday night.

You're pretty spot on with your assessment though.

we still need him to get a lot better and we still need to be getting Tyler as many reps as possible when we have games in hand.

1st concern - I was unable to go to Starkville this weekend (I don't want to talk about it), but watching the game on TV really showed the hammering Relf was taking. There will be a few more drives this year that Russell has to sub-in for that reason alone. Also, a couple of those drives, he looked really gassed at the end (and I can't blame him). This is the only reason I say we should keep playing Russell as much as possible when the game is in hand.

2nd concern - turnovers - He almost accounted for 4 turnovers last night. Fumble out of bounds, botched hand-off, interception called back, etc.

The problem is that 1) he is not safe with the ball; 2) this is not a quick strike offense; 3) which means we need sustained drives; 4) which means there are that many more chances for him to do something stupid with the football.

That said, as our defense hopefully just keeps getting better, playing this grind it out game with Relf is definitely playing to our strengths. Hopefully our D will start getting us some short fields and you will really see the ground game pay off.

Hegot up slow several times, and I'm afraid he's going to get injured if we ride him too much. I thought at the end of the game when we clearly had a victory, we should have been handing the ball off, not continuing to run Relf. </p>

were sailing the ball. Now most of those throws 20 and in are underthrown. Thats fine with me, we just need catches. No one is counting on YAC from us just yet.

Our defensive line is not very good. I don't know if its talent or coaching, but that is the most disappointing unit without question.

Tyler needs reps with the game in hand. But Ralph always looks tired to me- even in the 1st quarter. I dont really want him carrying it 20 times, I think 15 is a reasonable number, but I do think he is durable and can handle it for the most part. As I said, let's get up 28 Saturday before we rotate QB's, then let Tyler finish the show.

Ralph is no brain surgeon, and is going to make mistakes. We got some breaks Saturday- so what? It's about time. I think the more Ralph plays, the better he gets on that. He's only started 4 games in his college career.

Our defense is definitely not creating any short fields- both times they did Saturday- we scored TD's. Makes it tough on us offensively.

1. I completely agree. As far as ringing responsibly, it appeared my entire section was behaving well. There were at most 5 bells in the entire section ringing at bad times. The blue hairs around me as well thought the hot dog thing was hilarious, which I found interesting. Maybe we've just got a batch of dirty old timers right now that love some viagra.

2. I have looked the last 4 games I've been to and cannot find the sixpack tent in the junction. I need this **** like pinpointed with long/lat on google maps or something.

3. I was excited after the 3 and out first series. Then we scored and I thought we'd win by a million points. Then they got the ball back and got a first down every series until the 4th quarter.

4. I think KJ still disappears from time to time, but he definitely showed up Saturday night. I think Whitley might be one of our best defenders next year.

5. I thought the DL looked pretty good. They were good enough to the point where Georgia started playing super dirty with chop blocks every play.

6. I really liked the calls of running the ball a lot. That said I would like to see Ballard even more than he's already playing. He is the only guy we have that moves a pile and keeps running after he's wrapped up. He looks strong out there. The 5 wide sets still make me nervous, because Relf still has that tendency to throw the ball up for grabs on a jailbreak blitz. We were SUPER lucky that offsides call overturned that INT. That is the kind of **** that never happens for us. People say that we always get shafted on calls like that, but Saturday night it went our way for a change. Relf did a couple times recognize the blitz and audibled to bring one of the receivers in as an extra blocker. That was very encouraging. I also liked the run out of the 5 wide set depending on what the defense does. Relf is maturing nicely....HOWEVER....there were several plays during the zone read that he completely botched either by taking it himself and running right into a linebacker or giving it to the running back when the linebacker went after the running back. I would like to see Relf carry about 2/3 of what he did Saturday and give those carries to Ballard. Relf isn't going to hold up running the ball that many times as he did Saturday. We also have got to work on his carrying as he's still fumbling too much.

7. Relf really is a much better passer this year. There were drops aGAIN and really only a few of those were due to a misplaced pass.

8. Curiously, did we have any recruits there Saturday?

10. I didn't agree with the 4th and 1 call either, but it got it done. Also, I really, really hated the halfback pass call.

13. Our best RECEIVERS are Chris Smith and Arceto Clark. Still, Bump is one of our best playmakers and we have to keep giving him the ball even if he has drops. He still had one of the best catches of the game.

I really don't have any comments on the rest.

This is 100% correct. I was just telling somebody Chris Relf is the new Sleepy Robinson. Sleepy was a great athlete that played QB. He could run the ball on anybody and throw enough to keep the defense off balance.

Sherrill's smash mouth football. We are what we are right now and don't have the playmakers to get too cute. We play the rugged running game, take care of the football, mix the pass in when they over commit to stopping the run and we will win ballgames. Our defense is interesting as I believe we are well coached and the guys respond when their backs are against the wall but I do agree the defensive line has not been as dominant as I thoughtit would be. We have two losses to top 10 teams, so I feel pretty good at this point that if we keep improving this is going to be a pretty good year.

My only difference is I think Charles Mitchell is one hell of a football player and would be hard for me tot hink we lost him because he makes a big difference back there. we still need some more speed but I think Dan and his staff know that. Georgia is not going to win many in the league but I really like the qb. he can play. Great weekend and great atmosphere.

Hate to agree with c34 but much of his analyze is close to right, but
Rafph passing sucked again, very few yards after catch.
Clark falling into end zone, pass thrown behind him.
Smith diving back to catch, pass thrown behind him.
Berry diving to catch sideline pass that he could have turned up field, low and outside.
Balard (I think) pass up the middle has to turn 360 to try to catch it.
Russell didn't play because of left shoulder separationfrom LSU (head trainer call parents Monday morning)

but 9-14/148 yards/ 2 TD's is the best we are going to get out of him.

The pass was not behind Clark, Russell led him to where he was the only one who could catch it. If it had been behind him, the DB would have knocked it down
The pass that was incomplete to Ballard in the middle of the field was much harder than it looked. The MLB re-directed Ballard off of his route and Ralph had to adjust his throw for that and also to get it over the MLB.

Russell's arms looked fine when he was jumping around waving them on the sideline- I did like the fact he was very animated on the sideline. But the shoulder wasnt why he didnt play. That's just an excuse

We all know there's no possibility of putting every pass on the money every time. It might not have looked pretty, but I thought Relf put the ball exactly where Clark and only Clark could make a play. I'll take it.

we all know you love Relf, but go back and watch the replay. The throw to Clark was thrown too far to the outside AGAIN. Clark had to slow down and the ball was still at his left shoulder when he went up to make the catch.

The only difference between that play and the one at LSU is UGA DB << P. Peterson.

Relf's passing is servicable, but he needs to learn how to lead his receivers and put the ball in a position where they can make the catch in stride and pick up the extra yards.

But if we are going to dissect that play, it was off the mark. Clark had a step on his man and inside position. If Relf would have lead him more, Clark would have walked into the endzone. Instead, we essentially had a jump ball where Clark has to adjust and turn his back to the endzone. I honestly believe Patterson would have made a play on that ball just like he did in the LSU game.

I really can't think of any passes where Relf has hit his man in stride all year. Maybe Leon Berry's TD vs. Memphis?

However, as we have discussed, he is a great runner and he doesn't have to be a great passer. He just needs to run the ball, protect the ball, and make the occasional throw. Mullen finally treated him like he was Tebow Saturday. That is what he has to do. We just have to hope he holds up to the punishment - that is really one of the main things that made Tebow so special.

about the defense not being able to get off the field and the lack of 3 and outs. Its great that we are not giving up many big plays and have only given up 3 TDs at home against good SEC competition but we are letting people consistently move the ball up and down the field on us and that is causing us to start most of our drives deep in our own territory. Well that and the fact that our KO return team can't get past the 20. We gave up WAY too many 3rd and longs to UGA the other night.

The ball was thrown to his left shoulder, not his right, which is why he had to turn completely facing the play to catch it.

It wasn't intercepted/deflected because Clark had a couple steps on the DB, where as in the LSU game Peterson was on Clark's back, literally.

It looked to me like the throw was put in nearly the same spot as his throw in the LSU game; except the LSU game's throw was a bit higher.</p>

The one thing that I have noticed is that it looks like Ralph has problems withallot of the snaps. And he does not tuck the ball while running, lets it hang down to his knee almost.

We aren't disguising our blitzes well. We were telegraphing exactly which players were blitzingwell before the snap, and Georgia was audibling because of it, picking up the blitzers, and picking apart our pass D. It seemed like whenever Georgia audibled after we telegraphed the blitz, we audibled into the same base D play every time.

before, and a couple of times GA had the right play called, and we got burned. Shooting gaps are fine if you have good second level tacklers. It's best to shoot the gap, and blitz the backer or safety into the tackles spot that way you keep the holes filled, and you create confusion upfront for the offensive line and rb's.

about the defense not being able to get off the field and the lack of 3 and outs. Its great that we are not giving up many big plays and have only given up 3 TDs at home against good SEC competition but we are letting people consistently move the ball up and down the field on us and that is causing us to start most of our drives deep in our own territory. Well that and the fact that our KO return team can't get past the 20. We gave up WAY too many 3rd and longs to UGA the other night.

by QB's scrambling. Georgia did it at least four times. And of course even more mobile QB's like Jefferson and Newton killed us. It's like we're back there, but we can't get the QB down, or we have the play covered, but the QB has about a 50 yard lane to run in.

I don't know why we can't get the QB down on the ground to limit that- whether it's poor tackling, instincts, scheme or what the problem is.

We all know there's no possibility of putting every pass on the money every time. It might not have looked pretty, but I thought Relf put the ball exactly where Clark and only Clark could make a play. I'll take it.
Not that I'm complaining, but he gave the cb a chance tomake a play but ourwr did his job and pulled it in.I'm guessing Patterson bats that down. It'd be nice if he put passes on the money, but he made athrow that was good enough. And he's a good enough runner that if he gets a little more consistent in making throws that are good enough, it will make us a fairly dangerous team.

<div>Glad we won the game. It's nice to have a conference win...</div><div>
</div>1. I haven't taken a look to make sure but I don't think Relf completed a pass to a secondary receiver. That's my main issue with him (besides his lack of accuracy). Because he's an athlete playing QB and not an athletic QB, when he throws he has a radar lock on the first read and panics if it's not there. Omarr Conner II.<div>
</div><div>2. I think that game had more to say about who Georgia is (a team that is going through the motions and without it's best player) than who State is. Solid win, but not a signature win.</div><div>
</div><div>3. Why do we blitz again and again on 3rd and long? We give up WAY too many first downs on 3rd and long. Statistics clearly show that blitzing on 3rd and long is a bad idea and the best possible scenario for a big gain. Yet we continue to blitz away. My only guess as to why is that we don't have faith that our secondary can play solid pass defense. This will kill us in a close game (I should say kill us again, because it hurt us badly in the 1st half against Auburn).</div><div>
</div><div>4. I'll agree that the spread option attack gave us sustained drives, but I'm not sure that's a recipe for success in the SEC. We lack big play potential and I'm just not confident that Relf can continue to lead us on 10+ play scoring drives. The longer the drives go the more consecutive plays we have to make and the more opportunities we have to miss an assignment or get careless with the ball. </div><div>
</div><div>Again, glad we won the game but it felt like the Croom wins, i.e., we just played vanilla and hoped for the other team to screw up (thankfully Georgia obliged). I'll feel like the program has turned the corner when we start making plays to win games instead of counting on the opposition to not make them. </div>

That Georgia team played SC close at SC and then lost in the final seconds to Arkansas. They are not a bad team. We beat a mid-level SEC team Saturday. That's a great win for us right now.

Only thing that stopped us at LSU was Koenning getting impatient. We stayed patient and it paid off Saturday night. We lined up in the 4th quarter and drove it 93 yards down their throat. We completely dominated the 2nd half and the OL got better as the game went on. We're not ready to take down Bama or Florida, but we can play with everybody else and have a chance to win. That's all we can ask at this point. There's a big difference in taking control of the game in the 2nd half and a Croom win by the defense scoring a TD- you must be blind.

than it looks to a lot of people right now. They're a much better team than most people seem to think.

Did anyone else notice the number of times we took KJ Wright out of the game on passing downs? He is obviously an instinctive LB when it comes to the passing game (couldn't catch AIDS in a gay bar, though). I'd rather have him knocking passes down than have Chris White either 1) stand in one spot until the ball is thrown then go try to make a tackle or 2) count to 3 Mississippi then rush the QB.

On just about every passing down, especially 3rd and long, we took out one DL, two LB, and played with 7 DBs, including Zach Smith who covers nobody. If Z. Smith is in the game he needs to be deep at FS so he can come up and hit someone or playing 'dog' and rushing the QB.

9/14 for 148 with no picks is awesome for an MSU QB. I'd take that every day for the next 10 years. We will always be a running team.

Russell was helping Relf warm up for the second half so I'd say Russell is fine. Whether he was hurt or not I was happy to see Relf out there the whole game. I think it really helped his confidence.

For those of you complaining about off passes as I said in my other post most of his passes were catchable balls and they were also away from the defenders. If you're expecting Vince Young or Randall Cunningham to show up with a Relf jersey on you're in for a major disappointment. What we need out of Relf is a mistake free game manager that can also make plays with his feet. Our best teams have had that for a quarterback: Sleepy, Don, Madkin, etc.
