The playing surface at the Carolina Coliseum was named for Frank McGuire back in 1977. The picture below was from the women’s BB practice yesterday, showing that the court is now named for Jeff and Leslie Archie (?). Tradition taking a back seat to a fat donation?

I could very well be wrong, but I've always heard it referred to as the Frank McGuire Arena. Was his name on the court before? Is there a difference between the naming of the "arena" and the "court". Genuine question, as I don't know.

The building itself continued to be referred to as the Carolina Coliseum. It was the playing surface only that was referred to as the Frank McGuire Arena. His name was on the floor.

I remember playing on that floor back in the 70's. It was some kind of rubber instead of hardwood IIRC. All the cushioned seats were impressive to a kid.

When I was growing up, there was a high school that was in a building built in the 1920s. It had a "new" gym built around 1960 with hardwood and all the "modern" stuff like glass backboards. The old gym at that school had hardwood floors but was smaller and didn't have any acoustic tiles anywhere. When you played basketball in there, you were almost deaf from the noise echoing in the gym when you left.
