Gerald is well-liked because of what he is, an old alcoholic who entertains college kids at late night. However, he is also a prime example of the dangers of true alcoholism. The guy's whole life is in shambles because of his drinking habit.

I understand where Dave is coming from. Gerald was at the Bin and other bars just as much as he was at Dave's, and he is blatantly rascist. I could easily see a situation where he makes Dave's patrons uncomfortable, especially since a lot of Dave's clientele isn't exactly going to agree with Gerald on a lot of things. There comes a point where a person has to be responsible for his own actions, and Gerald has to accept the fact that his actions have resulted in his current predicament. And you have obviously never been anywhere where Gerald passes out in someone's front yard.

Gerald's apartment was in the same house as a good friend of mine, and his apartment was a disaster. If a person is willing to live in squalor due to their alcoholism, then their is no helping them. Dave has to protect his business, and that meant cutting Gerald off. A sixty something year old man shouldn't be dependent on handouts to survive.
