Coach Cohen does a pretty good job of explaining why we're doing this. Thoughts?

No way in hell we're going to be able to match the fake grass and the fake dirt to the real thing. I will gladly eat crow if I'm wrong, but this will be heavily bitched about during baseball season I bet.

I think John Cohen just whipped his dick out and slapped the entire MSU messageboard fan base in the face with it.

I figured they had good reasons for it.

My statement was generalized based upon the "sky is falling" crowd and the multiple threads posted on how the field was going to look. Freak out city over nothing. Complaining just to complain. If you weren't complaining, then the dick whip missed you and deservedly so.

In all actuality, if the tint of grass/dirt is slightly off, it won't make one lick of difference. You'll get over it.

Understandable -- but still don't particularly like the execution. We'll see if they can match everything up and make it look good, and if they can, I'll be happy and mostly back on board with the whole idea.

I was a huge proponent of doing this in foul territory. I, however, do not like it on the baselines and at the plate. If the execution turns out to be really good, I reserve the right to change my mind.

And to be clear, since I was discussing it with DRT a few days ago, Ole Miss did go back and extend theirs all the way to the fence(they didn't mess with the dirt) -- and they love it. Cohen discussed it with a buddy of mine during the series in Oxford at length, who confirmed to me that they had actually extended it.

So let me get this straight, because John Cohen finished second at the cws we are supposed to agree with everything he does. That's what has happened too many times in our history. Good PR by state to put Cohen our there on camera. Somebody reads the message boards. /

Well ... he probably knows best what field conditions are best for our players, so no we don't agree with him on everything but on this subject, yes.

No. We need to listen to Joe Blow who works at Best Buy about what we need to do for our field surface and drainage issues. I swear some of our fans are probably against cars and the Internet. They will claim that the carrier pigeon is a better form of communication device as well as the good ole mule and cart to get to work.

And most fans won't even notice it's been changed. And couldn't care less if it was change or not.

I hear what he's saying and why they did it, but I still hate it. Who gives a **** if 13 other SEC schools have artificial turf (also, this isn't true) at their field? Dudy is old school on 10000 different fronts. They didn't play on it in high school and they won't play on it in the pros. What's the real advantage, John? That was a real pussyfoot way of justifying it.

HS and Pro fields also take way less wear and tear compared to college fields. What is "old school" about a 25 year old stadium? By "old school", what you really mean is outdated. The only thing "old school" is the LFL tradition at Dudy Noble which predates Polk by a decade or so -- and the current stadium by 20 years -- and it's gone through many, many modifications over the years.

It looks like ****. Every version of this I've ever seen looks like ****. It may suck less when they get done with it, but it will still suck. I have always been and will always be 100% against turf. I think the playing surface at Vandy should be illegal (the benches for their basketball court should have to be made standard too, for that matter).

Cohen may have his reasons for doing it, but I don't have to like it. The whole reason for this video is because there has been a huge uproar and they are in full damage control mode now, just like they were with the hideous Astros uniforms last season.

I fully expect for them to make it look nice. Even though I expect it, it isn't unreasonable to say that it currently looks like ****. Cohen basically admits that by saying it is a work in progress.

Personally I like the new turf that is out there on the market. It looks much more real than in the past. I just don't like the turf replacing dirt though. I haven't seen one that I like yet. At this point, if they are going to replace the dirt down the lines you would think they would just do the entire infield. Matching it should be pretty damn tough. Hope they pull it off.

You don't have to agree with it, but you will accept it. At this time, in our baseball program, Cohen is pretty much going to get what he wants within reason. Especially on something like this. It's hard to argue that point. He may not get a $30-40 mil stadium, but if he wants field turf in the parking lot in front of his office, he will get it.

I did mean LFL and everything that comes with that. We have to be the only school with a dry campus in the country that purposely doesn't check coolers like that. Again, it's not about that or one particular thing. This is equivalent to ripping out the grass at DWS and installing fake grass because Dan Mullen wants a slight advantage running the spread offense.

I mostly have a problem with the video trying to dupe fans. Every visiting team has the same disadvantage of running on real dirt that we do and they will have the same advantage of running on turf that we will have. Again, I realize HS/pros vs college isn't fair but you don't see the Red Sox dismantling the green monster when they have a roster that struggles hitting homeruns. When they correct the bats and bunting decreases we're stuck with turf. Ridiculous statement (I realize this) but that's how I feel about it. Grass gets stuck in the drain? Are you kidding me? Make a 17ing walk-on sweep it up every night. Again.............. I get it, I hear why we did it, I just don't like it. 10 games into the season I'll forget about it and that will be the way DNF is.

look, cohen did a nice job explaining the reason behind doing it, and there is some validity to what he said, however, it looks like **** and not many ncaa teams have half the base path in astroturf and the other half in dirt....thats the reality of it. think about it....hitting an inside the park homer will require sprinting 90 feet of plastic grass (or whatever polymer they use for that ****), 180 feet of dirt, then another 90 feet of plastic grass. i would be totally ok with it if it wasnt plastic grass on the base paths...it was a good idea with good thought behind it with terrible execution (as some have already said). the only thing that makes sense is the reps taken on turf vs grass/dirt...but if that is the rational behind it, why not do the whole damn field vandy style with 15 foot stolen base slides? thoughtful response by cohen, but i would rather have continuous base paths...but i dont claim to know anything about the physics involved with running on 2 different surfaces or whether or not those 2 surfaces would have a significant impact on the game being played.

could you imagine a football field that was half astroturf, half grass? from the perspective of the base path, that is exactly the scenario we have. hopefully, it will forever be a non-factor.

yall remember those home-base slides at louisville and vandy? those players were coming in HOT and most players were not accustomed to the dynamics of sliding on turf vs dirt. a head-first slide could end very badly for the runner with that much momentum.

whatever, im done bitching about it. i dont like it, but there is nothing i can do....just hope it works out for the best. who knows, maybe it could be an advantage we can exploit.
