Franklin was going to be leveraging these jobs for more money and a longer commitment from the school, clearly. So if kraft didnt want to play ball, what was he to do, honestly?

Play the game.

Tell Franklin he will get an extension at the end of the season. Then tell the media Franklin is doing a great job. Get on the horn and privately look for a new coach. Fire Franklin at the end of the season and hire a new coach asap. New coach then contacts recruits and holds the class together.

They should have been in contention--with the run game alone
And Franklin, not the media, set expectations. Period.
They didn't have much of a run game. Struggled to run vs tomato cans for the last 10 years. Run game emerged when Franklin was fired. I said two years ago we needed to be run first. We had the rbs and OL, inconsistent qb and no receivers depth. Most in here said we could not win that way. That is ironic since Michigan won that way.

There were games were Barkley was shut down. The problem was the scheme.

Ps. The talent was nowhere near top 5. Clifford was the top returning wr and deluca was the #2 lb. Playoffs??? #jim.mora voice

Fair point......only problem in your plan, if Franklin continues to lose games, as we did this year and maybe more had Terry not changed some things....does Franklin become less desirable as candidate for these other places, namely VT? If so. PsU is still on the hook for $44M.

The issue under Franklin was he didn't alter the offense to fit his talent. That's always been an issue. Allar was never the issue and the WRs had success elsewhere. The scheme was the issue.
DeLuca was LB3

Why did Kraft have to be leveraged? Tell him he has a contract and if someone else offered more, he should take it. Call his bluff.

That per year amount seems way too high to be believable. Franklin was at $8-9 mill / year? Sitake is making in the range of $3-4 mill/year. Why the need to go to $11 mill? Either the info is wrong (hopefully) or Kraft has lost his damn mind.
11M sounds about right
I thought Hartline would get 9

Messy stuff, franklin leaves the team every week to interview for gigs as the team keeps losing on the field, maybe he doesnt get one of those jobs as his disappointing season is an endless loop on ESPN and pre game shows. Then, kraft fires him at the end of the year, its apparently "less messy," but with the added $45M buyout to be paid in full. Its not Franklin's fault, it's not kraft fault, Sandy put the program in this bind and I for one(maybe the only one) give Kraft accolades for making sure Franklin's image was not diminished therefore getting this buyout cut to $9M. I bet michigan state and Kentucky would trade with us right now. The other option is just to keep franklin I guess. But knowing the talent we lose this year, the new stadium upgrade, and the exhaustion of the fans after Franklin's most disappointing year....just cant keep him much longer.

Sitake it is, could have been worse imho

I'm not sure who would have been worse out of names mentioned honesly. He hasn't demonstrated he's an elite recruiter. He has zero ties to our area, or any areas that border our area. He likely won't be bringing much of his roster or his class with him because culturally kids who find BYU appealing generally aren't going to want to go to a giant party school where drinking is a pillar of student life. Doesn't have a reputation for winning big games.

Whats the upside? The generic, imagine So and So with our resources instead of XYZ's resources line?

Worse IMO...
Rhule, Terry Smith, Chesney, Brohm, Stoops, Lincoln Riley, Daboll, Sumrall and McCarthy--and those are mainly just names since Thanksgiving lol

Because BYU was upping it to $9 mill per year.

Sounds right? That would make him a top 7 highest paid coach. Sounds downright insane.
What did Kraft say this job was supposed to be?
Of course it will get paid like that.
I don't know why people care about how much we pay guys though...

his upside is what? Not a proven recruiter. Doesn’t have a history of beating top ten teams. Has spent basically his entire career at a school that couldn’t be more different culturally than Penn State and that doesn’t even include the geography.

Sell it to me.

BYU fans say he’s an elite ‘culture’ guy. Meet the new coach, same as the old coach….😩

His upside is huge
Dude is only 50 and he's won 22 games the past 2 year with the potential to win more as they just moved into the Big XII
Where is there not potential?
Why doesn't he fit culturally? Because he's a Mormon? Who cares what his religion is?
