I am referring to Terry. You would rather have Terry than a tenured head coach who has enjoyed a lot of success. The same Terry that blew the Indiana game and has continued a mentor relationship with effing James Franklin. The Terry that has lost the entire recruiting class. That is the candidate that you would want.
I’ll respect that take.
Here’s where I’m coming from:
* BYU is a very unique job. Being Mormon or any religion isn’t the problem. The question is what coach has ever left BYU and been wildly successful anywhere else? Can he recruit non Mormon players to a non Mormon school at a high rate.
* Data point. Bronco Mendenhall was successful at BYU. Also a Mormon born and raised in Utah. From 2005-2015, he compiled a record of 99-43. Was a pretty hot coaching commodity and under 50. (Granted they are different people, but can we see some similarities between him and Sitake? Both 49/50 years old. Sitake - 83-44 at BYU). Mendenhall bolted for Virginia. Went 36-38 in the mighty ACC. Next stop - New Mexico where he went 5-7. Now, at 59 years old, he just finished up 6-6 at Utah State. (Yep. Back to Utah). A combined 47-51 post BYU.
* Is Terry Better? Maybe not? Probably not? I do think if we get to that point, he’s a lot cheaper and an easier buy out if it doesn’t work. I also think he would recruit our territory better than Sitake.
All that said, if we hire Sitake, I hope to God I’m wrong and PSU goes on an unprecedented tear! I’m just saying, I haven’t seen BYU coaches lighting up the county.
