This is a little sketchy, I realize, since I am hearing this something like sixth hand, but word from a guy I know, who knows a guy, who knows a guy, etc... is that Tulane doesn't plan to release Jerrod Parks. The reason given for the non-release is that supposedly our coaches made an illegal contact.

Now, I have no idea if any of this is true - it might be just poorly conceived rumoring - but it's the story floating around Chocolate City.

THIS is why Cohen is good. We haven't beaten ANYONE yet, and people are already bitching about him.

I have no idea how we "recruited" him, but I would have to think that Cohen knows the rules and what he can and can't do.

I suspect what really happened was Parks obviously got the cold shoulder from Polk and Raffo, and then went ahead and signed with Tulane.

Then Polk is gone and Cohen comes in, and Parks gives the staff a call, and they welcome him with open arms. He did say that MSU was his "dream place to play", so it's not like this should be a big shock to Rick Jones. Also, if we made "illegal contact", why doesn't Jones turn us in to the NCAA?

Now, to change the subject a little- I think we need to play Tulane home and home in baseball. They have a great team and there would be some added intrigue with this situation going down like it has. It would be a fun series, and I'd like to see the Dogs in the Garden District or at Zephyer Field.

It's small by SEC standards, but it's either brand new or has been recently overhauled. The only bad thing I can say about it is that the entire field is Astroplay, like at Smith-Wills in Jackson.

Our staff never made any illegal contact - obviously, they know the rules and wouldn't contact a signed prospect. Todd is right - Polk did not show any interest, so Parks chose Tulane over FSU. Parks contacted our new staff several weeks ago after they were told of his interest by a third party.

Just add Parks to the long list of good players Polk chose not to recruit so he could spend his scholarship money on good boys who went to his camps and kissed his ***.

you are EXACTLY right in laying this at the feet of the recruiting juggernaut that was Raffolk.

do players sitting out a year b/c of transfer count against the 35?

If Parks does in fact show up and sits a year, that actually is probably best for us. He is either a 3B or an OF likely. We lost Hogue and Powers after this year so there is more room for him.

to an out of conference school that isn't on our schedule (and likely won't be for the foreseeable future).

It's a brand new facility (they essentially tore down the old stadium and built on top of it) and seats 5,000 . If State and Tulane played a series down here, I'd hope they'd play on campus. Zephyr Field is bigger, but Turchin is very nice and the Uptown setting is very cool. Southern Cal is playing Tulane at Turchin in 09.

Say, a Ryan Powers for a Jarrod Parks.
Seriously though, with the litany of players that are supposedly going to be transferring, maybe we'll just say we owe you a release.
