There has been some talk on the other boards about the number of teams with sub .500 records that made the playoffs. So I decided to see what the numbers show across all classifications. Just simply based on the number of sub .500 teams in the playoffs for each classification....

Class 6: Has 3 teams sub .500 in
Class 5: Has 5 teams sub .500 in
Class 4: Has 1 team sub .500 in
Class 3: Has 15(not a typo) of 32 teams sub .500 in
Class 2: Has 3 teams sub .500 in
Class 1: Has 8 teams sub .500 in

So based on these numbers, it's safe to say that Class 4 is the most competitive as a whole. Not only does Class 4 have the fewest sub. 500 teams in the playoffs, they also have the most undefeated teams. Louisa, Eastern View, Dinwiddie, and Monacan are all 10-0.

Interesting #'s.
I bet the class 6 teams are all in 6B where 7 of 8 teams make the playoffs?

I don't think that is a very fair metric unless you also consider strength of schedule. For example SoCo is the 5-5 team in 6a. All their games were against class 6 teams and they played 5 playoff teams, losing to 4 of them, Based on an average of opponents PP Ratings, they had the toughest schedule in their region.

I don't have data on the other classes, but I would suspect that the C4 plays down a class or two quite often and that pads their W/L record.

That's a fair assessment but like all theories, that isn't 100% accurate. Take for example, E.C. Glass in Class 4 Region D. They played one Class 5 (OOD), one Class 6 (OOD), four class 4 teams, and 4 in district class 3 teams. 8 of their 10 opponents made the playoffs, including the 4 teams from the lower classification.
