By definition underrated means that the value and quality is not realized by the masses. Journey, conversely is wildly overrated and popular based on a mediocre catalog that didn’t influence many others.

For consideration, i give you - Little Feat.

I have been listening to a lot of Wolfmother lately. They literally do not have a bad song. I have no idea how they slipped under the radar in the early 2000's because they flat out rock. They emulate and follow a Led Zeppelin type of sound and personally I would rather listen to them. Even though they did not invent the psychadelic rock sound they nearly perfected it.

I have always thought 311 was criminallly underrated. They invented an entirely new sound by combining hard rock chords, reggea beats, ska composition, rap lyrics, and harmonic singing into a nice neat little package. They took up and coming acts on tours with them for years and influenced a whole generation of reggea fusion bands. Transistor doesn't have a bad song on it and IMO is 50 minutes of music perfection.

Editted to include 2 of my under the radar favorites for these bands.

How is Prince underrated? Who doesn't think he was great?

Springsteen also never had a #1 hit. Billy Joel's only #1 was We Didn't Start the Fire and Bob Seger's only #1 was Shakedown. All 3 of those amaze me.

I will throw Kiss into the ring - they still tend to get discredited because of the makeup and stage show - but they have a number of songs that straight out rock and Ace Frehley could certainly make a list of under appreciated lead guitarists.

Underrated because their music is so awful, imo, of course. Agree with ^, without makeup and explosions, no one would have ever heard of Kiss.

CCR is a good selection. Black Crowes, also, underrated.

Funk Brothers. Backed all the big Motown acts

They are probably number one. Most people have enjoyed their music over the years and have no idea who they were or that they provided music for so many different acts. Truly underrated.

REM - had a long and epic career, but honestly never felt like they got the credit they deserved for being a great act.

Modern groups I will go with Radiohead, same as above, was many years after they became popular that I really got into their music, and now I think they are awesome, but would guess they have made about as much in their entire career as the Stones make on any one of their last 15 tours.

Like above posters, who doesn't think CCR is a classic name in R&R, would never say they were underrated

I still have the KISS lunchbox that I carried to kindergarten. Ace is the reason I first picked up the guitar. I camped out for tickets for the first reunion tour with makeup.
That being said, this is the worst take in the thread. Their songs are the most simplistic tunes ever written. Ace is sloppy as hell and didn't even actually play on half of the albums he was in the band for.

I agree with whoever said Cinderella. They might have had the hair band look at first but their just a straight-up, blues rock band.

Whoa.. did not expect to see 311 here. One of my favs. But id actually argue Incubus is more underrated. That band had some big mainstream hits and still had extremely varied albums. S.C.I.E.N.C.E was just absurd.

In staying with a more current theme.. i'd put Coheed and Cambria up there. Concept albums based off of books written by the GD front man himself, claudio sanchez. Its metal, its emo, its prog rock, its rock opera, its almost its own genre. But above all, they can put out some damn catchy songs that could border the pop genre.

Along those same lines, Booker T and the MGs. Played on a TON of Stax soul records. Steve Cropper co-wrote 'Sitting on the Dock of the Bay' along with many other hits. Unbelievable groove with Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, etc.
