James Cameron. The man has created box office juggernauts in Titanic and Avatar. Terminator, Aliens 1-2 are some of the best Sci Fi/Actions movies ever made. Seems
Iike everything he touches has an epic, larger than life feel to it. Also has another run in him with Avatar 2-5.

Alfred Hitchcock was very underrated, IMHO.

In what world is the director of Vertigo, North by Northwest, Rear Window and Psycho underrated? 'Cause I'd like to live there.

I think some people have problems with the word "underrated".

I think some people need their sarcasm detector calibrated.

He's probably ahead of JC, but not by much. I hate how older movies are considered masterpieces by critics, because it's simply not true. Some of those 40s and 50s movies had some of the worst acting IMO

The thing about Cameron was both of his biggest blockbusters were hype pieces. Titanic sold because of all the hype about the special effects and detail of the ship. Avatar, the hype over how long it took Cameron to make the movie, and how he wouldn't make it until the special effects could be done justice.

How can james Cameron be underrated?
He's widely considered to be one of the best film makers of all time.

1. Sohpia Coppola
2. Wes Anderson
3. Paul Thomas Anderson
4. David Fincher

Ahhh, but the acting in Titanic, Avatar & Terminator made Sir Lawrence Olivier stand and applaud.

Are you sure you aren't Big Blue Sean?

I was actually thinking about this the other day and I will have to go with Rob Reiner. His credits include: This is Spinal Tap; Stand By Me; Princess Bride; When Harry Met Sally; Misery and A Few Good Men but I doubt anyone would have him on a "Greatest Director" list.

First off, to me, Underrated director means someone who has consistently produced top quality films with very little recognition from their peers and does not routinely do well at the box office, but manages a huge following after the films have been released on home video. James Cameron does NOT fall under this category. He is not only an Academy Award winning director, but also the writer/director of not only two of the top 3 grossing films of all-time, but also the writer/director of 3 of the most celebrated Sci-Fi films of all-time (Aliens, Terminator 1 & 2). He has been consistently celebrated among his fans and his peers in Hollywood as one of the top directors of his era. Not underrated whatsoever.

For me, the most underrated director is John Carpenter - hands down. He's directed 2 of the top 5 horror films of all time (Halloween & The Thing). He has directed a who's who list of cult-classic films - Assault on Precinct 13, Escape From New York, The Fog, Christine, Star Man, Big Trouble in Little China, They Live, The Prince of Darkness, and Memoirs of an Invisible Man. Not only that, but he's also composed some of the most memorable film scores in movie history too.

Runner-up for me would be Joe Dante. He's the director of Piranha (1978), Rock 'N' Roll High School Forever, The Howling, Gremlins, The Explorers, Innerspace, The 'Burbs, Gremlins 2, Matinee, and Small Soldiers among others. His films are consistently considered among the most memorable and re-watched films of the 1980's and early 90's, yet the man's name is fairly anonymous and unknown despite this.

I do think Carpenter is underrated, because his films are much bigger than him. Much like George Lucas but on a smaller scale. For some reason, I don't think most horror films get credit for being well-made masterpieces. So in that sense he is very underrated. The Thing and Halloween are classics!
