Channel surfing turned up Andy Griffith show with no Barney but Jerry Van Dyke as downtrodden guy from Morgantown WV. Aunt Bea declares him part of the family having kin there with same last name. Andy gives him work around jail so conversation includes Jerry becoming a Deputy.......
Don Knotts did leave the show for a time over salary dispute so maybe trial run to replace Barney.

I googled this for anyone interested.

Season 5, Episode 32 "Banjo Playing Deputy".

As the OP mentioned, Knott's left to make some movies and this was the second episode in his absence.

Usually passed that show up when I am clicking through.
But there are days when I don't even turn on the TV

Have been interested in buying a piece of property in that part of N. Carolina.
Bought something in Colorado but looking to sale it. I can leave my family a lot more in terms of potential if I sale

I still need a place in the mountains for the end of June and beginning of July.

My oldest son being stationed in Camp Lejeune has allowed me to travel N Carolina a lot the last 10 years.
WNC is beautiful, has potential and so far I like the people.

Should visit the Andy Griffith museum in Mount Airy

Actually Griffith had told Knotts when they started the show that he would only do it for 5 years. Griffith changed his mind, but Knotts had already lined up movie roles. Jerry Van Dyke was offered the deputy role but turned it down to star in a tv series called My Mother the Car. It was a flop and Van Dyke later said he wished he had taken the deputy job.

Just came back from a weekend in Saluda, NC. off the beaten path a bit but close to Hendersonville and Asheville.
