Gene Watson. Great underrated country singer.

Can't believe no one has mentioned Ray Price.

Johnny Paycheck? I mean really?

He’d be allowed to visit on a three day weekend and burn vacation days, but come on. He wouldn’t he within 50 places of that four…and I like his music.

I couldn't be mad at that list.

The male thing is high subjective:
Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, George Strait, George Jones

Women at bit more solid:
Dolly, Patsy, Emmylou, Lynn

Honorable mentions: Randy Travis, Alan Jackson, The Highwaymen, Hank SR/JR, Tanya Tucker, Krystal Gail.

I have the feeling much of this will be generational. You could easily say Acuff, Buck Owens, Rodgers, Tubb, Glen Campbell, Kitty Wells, Tammy Wynette, etc.
Silly me, I thought Mt. Rushmore list would be 4-5 names.

Johnny Cash transcended generations as well as any one. Don Williams was such an amazing voice. Chrystal Gayle amazing stage prescence. Got to see all 3. Jimmy Buffett was the one act I have seen repeatedly. Common theme is clarity of lyrics from these great singers.

It's tough to come up with just 4 as so many have made an impact on country music in one way or another. If I was going to break it down generationally it would probably be something like this.

1920's-1950's:
Jimmie Rodgers
Hank Sr
The Carter Family
Roy Acuff

1950's-1980's:
Merle Haggard
Waylon Jennings
Johnny Cash
Willie Nelson
George Jones

1980's-2000
George Straight
Randy Travis
Alan Jackson
Dwight Youkam

2000-current
NONE BECAUSE COUNTRY MUSIC DIED 20+ YEARS AGO

Ladies:
Dolly Parton
Loretta Lynn
Patsy Cline
Tammy Wynette

Groups:
Brooks and Dunn
Alabama
Everly Brothers
Oak Ridge Boys
The Judd's

Honorable mentions:
Don Williams
Earnest Tubb
Marty Robbins
Buck Owens
Ray Charles
Kenny Rogers
Hank Jr
Conway Twitty
Keith Whitley

*** Edited to include George Effin Jones so that Lord Egg can take me off of his "People to Kill Today" list ***

Look who memorized the Ken Burns Country Music docuseries...

Kidding. I'm not a big country guy but this is a great and comprehensive list of incredible talent and countless legends.
To the extent that Kentucky's adopted son John Prine is considered country, he has to be on any list.

Vince Gill has to be somewhere. He has won more CMA awards and Grammys than any other country music artist. He has also been a member of the Grand Ole Opry for a long time. Dude's voice is about as smooth as a good bourbon on the rocks. He can flat out sing and seems to be very well respected by all the old time country singers.

They don't call Strait, King George for no reason. He has to be on there as he has more #1's than any musician across the board. Plus, they're all damn good songs.
