I live in an area out west where there is a well-documented mountain lion population.

FTR, just because they said they suspected the Bourbon County mountain lion from last year may have been in captivity at some point doesn't mean it's true. They said the damned thing was from South Dakota. Just like this one. They just invented the "may have been in captivity at some point" **** so people wouldn't be scared to death.
There was one captured on atrail cam in September in Obion County Tn. That county borders Western Ky.
With the Deer population explosion its just a matter of time before Mt Lions have a population east of the Mississippi.

The Department of Fish and Wildlife spent the entire lead up to the DNA testing last year stating that it was likely a pet imported from a foreign country. They explained that the DNA test would bear this out. Then they never reported their findings until a local television station did a followup report months later. They released the DNA results showing that it had in fact come from South Dakota.
The Fish and Wildlife official in tonight's story explained that the Tennessee mountain lion had likely migrated from South Dakota. The official explained that these animals can roam in excess of 1,000 miles in search of new territory. You're welcome to go ahead and trust what some low level government employee tells you might be the truth. I'll continue to think for myself.
Your logic is flawed, they continue to tell you that captive lions are much more dangerous than wild Mt lions. If they didn't want to scare the public, they would want it to be wild, the much less dangerous of the two.

Yeah, that's just wrong. An "escaped pet" is an isolated incident and people move on without really given it a second thought. A "wild animal" means there may be more of them.
As far as your link that you failed to provide, their biggest piece of evidence was that it would prove to be an illegally imported pet and not a native of North America. When that didn't pan out they gave some circumstantial evidence that might point to it having been a pet at some point. However, the two key pieces of evidence they uncovered were it being male and from South Dakota- the exact same profile you would expect from a wild animal.

The first Mountain Lion I saw in Kentucky was at Lake Barkley. I was on silo overlook looking at one drinking out of the water and it weighed about 50 pounds. Too big for a Bobcat. Except that it was a Bobcat. There are some big Bobcats out there. I was not drunk or on meth just near sighted.
I checked. The mountain lion was spotted 58.4 miles from the KY state line and is moving towards it. He said he'll be up here by tomorrow night and wants to know if we have any eligible female cougars he can meet for drinks, and doesn't care if they're native , captive, or travelers....he just wants to have a good time.

I am not sure about mountain lions, but my friend Flick said he saw some grizzly bears near Pulaski's Candy Store. Just sayin'.

I have talked with many people that have seen them. I have seen one outside Water Valley in western ky.
Seen one one in western tn not far from Jordan's liquor store on west state line.
5 or 6 people have seen them near these areas as well.
