That's bogus. I'm not sure how the numbers are calculated, but if they came out this way, then it's a bogus formula. Half of the Big Ten is better than every Mountain West team. If you compare the tops of the conferences, the B10 dominates MW. If you compare the middle tier teams in the conference, the B10 dominates the MW. If you compare the bottom teams in the conferences, it may be about equal, but I would still give a slight edge to B10.
Here's how I would rank the teams in the two conferences combined (overall season, not what they've done lately to match rpi):
1. Indiana-
B10 24 3
2. Michigan-
B10 21 4
3. Michigan State-
B10 21 5
4. Wisconsin-
B10 19 8
5. Ohio State-
B10 19 7
6. Minnesota-
B10 18 9
7. San Diego State-
MW 17 7
8. Colorado State-
MW 19 5
9. Iowa-
B10 17 9
10. New Mexico-
MW 22 4
11. Illinois-
B10 19 8
12. UNLV-
MW 19 7
13. Boise State-
MW 15 8
14. Purdue-
B10 12 14
15. Wyoming-
MW 16 8
16. Air Force-
MW 13 10
17. Northwestern-
B10 13 14
18. Nebraska-
B10 12 14
19. Fresno State-
MW 7 16
20. Nevada-
MW 11 13
21. Penn State-
B10 8 18
Mountain West is probably about the 5th or 6th best conference. The Big Ten, Big East, Big 12, and ACC are for sure better than Mountain West. I'd probably say the Pac 12 is too. Mountain West is probably closer to the SEC than anything, which isn't that good.
