AUSTIN, Texas (May 18, 2023) – The No. 6 West Virginia baseball team fell behind early to Texas, Thursday, and could not recover, falling to the Longhorns, 12-2. The Mountaineers fall to 39-14 overall and 15-7 in the Big 12 while Texas improves to 36-18 and 13-9 in conference play.

With two games to play in the regular season, the Mountaineers now hold a one-game lead in the Big 12 standings over Oklahoma State, who defeated Oklahoma, Thursday evening.

West Virginia avoided major trouble in the first as the Longhorns loaded the bases with nobody out but managed only one run.

In the second, however, Texas put up five runs on just two hits, the big one being a three-run home run off the bat of Porter Brown, his first of three on the day, adding two-run homers in the fourth and sixth inning.

The Mountaineers got on the board in the eighth as sophomore JJ Wetherholt extended his on-base streak to 55 games with a single before coming around to score on a double by junior Braden Barry.

WVU scored a second run in the ninth with sophomore Evan Smith delivering an RBI single.

The two teams will be back tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. ET for game two of the series from UFCU Disch-Falk Field

Longhorns were the better Team.
Texas was focused.

Randy's starting P selection,
is critical for tonight.

A "must win" tonight.

West Virginia needs to hit -
hit early & often.

Especially JJ

I'm assuming he is going with Hampton tonight? Sliding everything up a day from the usual Friday series start may have dictating him using pitchers that aren't the normal guys in the weekend conference series Thursday night. So I assume Hampton tonight, Traxel Saturday.

With the Oklahoma State loss WVU assured a share of Big 12 title. I would prefer this next game to be a win to take it outright and be a #1 seed.

Must be against NCAA rules for WVU to have anything.

Well......need to earn it every now and then too. Pitt in 2007.......and now Texas 2023.........win a game.

Does anyone know why Hampton hasn't pitched yet? Is he going today? He's been the Friday night guy all season.
