MANHATTAN, Kan. (April 1, 2023) – Unable to muster much offense, the West Virginia baseball team fell to Kansas State, 7-1, Saturday at Tointon Family Stadium. The Mountaineers fall to 20-7 overall and 1-1 in the Big 12 while the Wildcats improve to 19-10 and 5-3 in conference play.
Graduate student Blaine Traxel, coming off four complete games in his last five starts, managed to go 7.0 innings, but allowed four solo home runs in the game, collecting a loss for just the second time this season.
At the plate, the Mountaineers managed just four hits in the game with the only run of the game for WVU coming on an RBI triple from junior Landon Wallace. Sophomore JJ Wetherholt went 1-for-4 to extend his on-base streak to 33 games.
After a scoreless first inning, the Wildcats took the lead with solo home runs in both the second and third.
Wallace nearly tied the game in the fourth as he hit the ball the other way off the top of the wall, settling for a run-scoring triple as graduate student Dayne Leonard came around to score from first.
The Mountaineers got one runner on in each of the last five innings, but that was all that WVU could do in each of those frames.
Kansas State extended its lead with a run in the fifth and seventh before putting the game away with three runs in the eighth.
West Virginia will look to claim the series tomorrow afternoon in the rubber game. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. ET.
