MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Aug. 7, 2020) – The West Virginia University women’s soccer team was selected to finish fourth in the 2020 Big 12 Soccer Preseason Poll, the conference announced on Friday.

The Mountaineers received 54 points and sit behind preseason favorite Texas Tech (72 points), Oklahoma State (70) and TCU (55). Texas was picked fifth with 50 points, while Kansas (48 points) and Baylor (38) were selected sixth and seventh, respectively. Oklahoma (31 points), Iowa State (16) and Kansas State (16) rounded out the list.

The poll was based on votes by the Big 12’s 10 head coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own team.

Texas Tech received six of the league’s 10 first-place votes, while Oklahoma State earned three. Baylor also received a first-place vote.

West Virginia, which is coming off a 12-8-2 season and its 20th consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament, reached the NCAA Third Round for the fourth time in the last five years in 2019. The squad returns 13 letterwinners, including eight starters, this fall. In all, the Mountaineers have claimed nine total Big 12 titles (five regular season, four tournament) since joining the league in 2012.

WVU is 54-7-5 all-time in Big 12 competition following a 5-3-1 mark inside the league last season, good for a fourth-place finish.

What a slap at Nikki Izzo-Brown’s team. Yes, they had a very down year last year finishing 4th. And that was after two more down years where they only finished 2nd in the B12. Yes, only 2nd after a string of 6 1st place finishes.

Don’t fear Mountaineer fandom. Nikki will have this team back on top in no time. Last year was an anomaly. It was a young team with only 4 SR’s and 4 JR’s. This year 1 of the 4 JR’s left leaving Vanginkel as the only SR while Segaila and Smith both RS’d giving them an extra year.

Coaches are overlooking Nikki’s team in the early polls. This will only make good bulletin board fodder.
