MSU Allegiance Discussion

I spent Christmas with some old MSU alumni: my dad, 3 uncles and 2 cousins who all went to State. We got into a huge argument/discussion because they were ALL saying how when UofM is not playing MSU, they pull for them because they want to see teams and players from Miss do well, because MS never gets respect as a state. I told them that was BS. I hope they lose in bowl games, and every single sport. Even UofM alumni in the NFL I want to see crash and burn (i.e. Eli, McCluster, etc.)<div>
</div><div>So the question is, anyone else like this? How common is this amongst MSU fans? because this is the first time I have heard MSU fans use this idea to pull for UofM.</div>

it can't do anything but hurt MSU because recruits will be more open to them. Obviously anyone who just wants to see the state look good has more interest in that than our athletics.

less tolerant of anything associated with UM.......To be honest, some of it is fueled by message boards and I'm sure it's the same way from their perspective......There are ******** on both sides of the fence that just make you hate one another......I think this rivalry has gotten uglier over the years and there seems to be less and less respect for each other.....Nowwith all that being said, I hate the bastards andhope theynever win as much as a game of checkers....

live is LSU (mississippi southern is nonconsequential). So listening to all that L<span style="text-decoration: underline;">SU crap is like listening to the Bammer fans (most of the loud mouths never set foot on the campus). So I pull for the Black Bears when they aren't playing State. I'm an alumnus of State and you probably would think I'm "old."

In most cases I take that same position, especially if they are playing out of conference, especially if they play in a Bowl against a Big Ten or West Coast team.
Whatever they do, reflects on Mississippi, and what we do does the same. Generally, I'm an SEC fan, and it's us against the rest.

NOW!... If they lose, I just laugh and go on...I just can't lose in that situation.

I'm like you. I hope they lose every game they play. I hate the Giants because of Eli Manning. One week next year I'll be a Fresno State fan, and if they were playing Boisie State, I would pull for BSU.

I dont always go for SEC teams in bowl games. I live in Mississippi, i can count on one hand the number of times in my life I've had a discussion about "what is the best conference in college football." We've won 5 straint BCS' titles, I dont think there is much debate now.

I'll sleep just fine if Bama loses to Mich State or UT loses to UNC.

I love to see them lose because they are our rival. But since my family (brothers & parents) are die hard UM fans I kind of feel sorry for them when they suck like they did this year. If not for the family connections, I'd like to see them lose every game.

twice when they thought MSU was about to pull ahead of them, especially this last probation. Trumped us charges by a player who signed with then (supposely for nothing after we offered him mega inducements-----only a fool would believe that). That whole bunch of crap was lead from the top at uofm. After 10 years of wondering thur the wilderness caused by those bastards I never pull for them. Peace and love.............

except for the part about the NFL. How can you hate NFL players because of where they went to college? I'm sure you hate more than just one school. You sure there's not a player on your favorite pro team that went to one of your hated schools? For example, I'm a huge Saints fan. I can't stand USC. We have three players from USC on our active roster. I certainly don't hope they play terrible. I'm also an Ole Miss fan. I hope Anthony Dixon does well, because he's an awesome talent. I also kind of like the 49ers, dating back to the Young and Rice years. It also doesn't hurt that Willis plays for them. On the other hand, I hope Jerious Norwood crashes and burns because he plays for the hated Falcons. Colleges are merely stepping stones for players to get to the big paychecks. There are many good reasons to hate players in the NFL. Their college affiliation isn't one of them.

If we need them to beat LSU in football to give us the SEC Championship during the next to last week of the season, you better believe I'll pull for them.

Normally, as in 99% of the time, I pull against them. Mainly because I have heard too many of their fans talk about how much they hate State, belittle MSU, and then there's the whole PI investigator thing in the early 2000's trying to shut our program down. So, no I don't pull for them.

I also won't let it ruin my day if they should win.

Because I've seen grown men wear #10 Eli jersey to Sunday church of all places. This mental midget thought it was Ole Miss playing in that Super Bowl.

When they have a good team, I want them to do well. When they are mediocre or bad, I don't give a **** and actually like seeing them lose.

In the 1st of the back-2-back Cotton Bowls, I was pulling for them to beat #4 Texas Tech. In the 2nd Cotton Bowl, I wanted them to lose because I thought they backed their way into that game and didn't deserve to be there.

unless it helps State if they win. Once they graduate, it really doesn't matter. My pro allegiances differ from my college allegiance.

and how can you not like Dexter's "no texting while driving" commercials?

I think that's just as tacky as you do. As for that Superbowl, I'm certainly happy that Eli and the Giants pulled it off. However, I was pulling for the Giants mostly because I hate the Patriots. When the Saints played the Giants last year, I was hoping our defense would put Eli on the ground every play he was on the field.

Hate, hate, hate them no matter the sport, no matter their opponent. I'm of the thought that if they do good, it hurts us with potential prospects so I would rather them suck and bomb. I want State to be the only program worth supporting. It's selfish, but there's truly only room enough for one successful program in MS. I'd rather it be State.

although not really hard. I mean, I laughed my *** off when Jacksonville St. beat them. I like the SEC being strong so I don't like any SEC team losing out of conference games. I'm not going to tear up or anything though. Other than that I hope they lose every SEC game they play.

i really hope they would lose the entire unversity. if u of m ceased to exist i would celebrate. in addition i believe it is impossible for any state fan to root for the bears unless it helped state win the division. to want the bears to do good is like wishing we could have croom back. stupid, stupid, stupid</p>

I wouldn't pull for the bears if they played against the Taliban. Mainly for 2 reasons:because 1) I want recruits to see State as much more attractive as possible (if State andthebears both go 8-4:even; if Stategoes 8-4 and the bears go 4-8: advantage State. I'll take the latter.)and 2) because of their arrogant, pink-polo and scarfwearing, cocktail-sipping, chandelier-in-tent-placing fanbase.

And I'm not sure how your relatives andother peoplethink the bears winning a couple more games will make the state of Mississippi lookmuch better and get more respect. Alabama has 2 teams in a row playing for the title and they're stillperceived as one of the dumbest, fattest, most redneck states. It's gonna take more than having good football teams to change that. Wouldn't be any different for our state.

where an Ole Miss win will actually help State in the short term, like getting to a better bowl or winning the division.

My Dad was a UM grad, but being a product of the great depression and WWII, he wasn't a homer. He cheered for State as long as they weren't playing UM and that's the way I used to be. The fact that my Dads dad and his 4 brothers all went to State(then Miss A & M College)probably had something to do with that. My sister married a USM grad and 2 of his 3 sons went there. Family gatherings used to get pretty interesting, so much so that back in the 80s my younger brother got his shoulder separated during a family game of 'touch' football. The women of the family promptly banned the annual Thanksgiving day game of 'touch' football.
Things changed back when JWS began to win at State. UM supporters went to great lengths to bring him down. This is when I began having the "my 2 favorite teams are MSU and who ever is playing ole miss" syndrome. When State starts to have success, especially in football, is when the true colors and underhandedness of UM begins totruly manifest itself. Their arrogance and uppity attitude really grates on my nerves. This is why I find it increasingly more difficult to wish them anything other than bad fortune.

I would only root for OM if it were to positively would effect State. The only time I pull for SEC teams is in conference games. If SEC teams are playing OOC, I generally pull for the other conference unless I really don't like the other team (i.e., Texas, USC, Miami).

if I was going to hate a fanbase for saying bad **** about us, I would have to hate the entire nation. I would rather them be bad since it helps us with recruiting, but since I'm not from Mississippi and don't talk to people from Mississippi outside of MSU and a few relatives, what they do isn't that important. Now if Alabama and Auburn were to both start having 2 or 3 win seasons for some reason, that would be entertaining.

that you, collectively as a fan base, are overly concerned with any and every thing to do with UM.

The truth is we are both one of the four perennial bottom feeders of the SEC and will never enjoy anything more than moderate, sporadic, success in football. I, and many UM fans, don't concern ourselves with the "rivalry" between the schools because its just a pillow fight with rare exceptions. Let me say that those UM fans that think our main rival is LSU are near-delusional, as I believe LSU thinks about us once or twice a year at best, and quite possibly just every few years.

Enjoy this year and however many more Mullen can deliver, because in the end both programs will steadily cycle between 4 to 7 wins per year, gained by beating 3 OOC opponents on average, with an occasional 10 win year and the certainty of the 2 or 3 win years that kill yet another coach and start the cycle all over again. Oh, one of us may pull a South Carolina '10 or an MSU '98 and win the West when bammer, auburn, and LSU all suck and one of us is good enough to beat arkansas, but don't hold your breath until the next time it happens.

Happy New Year.

I don't have a true NFL team, so I pull for former Rebels for the most part in the NFL, and before them I pull for my fantasy team, priorities and all?

That said, I despise the segment of our fans that all of a sudden consider themselves Giants fans. If you weren't a Giants fan before 2004, you aren't a Giants fan now.

I can't stand reading the Spirit in particular following a Giants game, seeing so many fans talk about the Giants as if it's their team.

It's not your team, and the minute Eli retires or is traded, you won't care about the Giants again. Just a pet peeve of mine. I have to laugh at the people who get on there calling for Tom Coughlin's head. Why would you care so much?

I think some people "hate" TSUN more than they love MSU. I also think that sometimes that hatred for the other school makes MSU look bad in certain situations. Just beacuse Ole Miss fans want to have a piss-poor attitude about MSU doesn't mean we should do the same. We should be above acting like spoiled children. This is our STATE now with Mullen as the coach.

I also pull for all Mississippi players in all sports, we are last in so many things it's nice to see the recognition.
This past weekend my brother-in-law had on his Ole Miss sweatshirt. I told him that I thought he would burn it after this year's football showing and that until Mullen leaves MSU that the Bears will not be very good. He had nothing to say, nothing at all. I left it at that and we started talking about deer hunting. Now if the shoes had been reversed he would not have stopped the ribbing, I just didn't want to beat down a dead bear. I kind of feel sorry for them now, well not really...

can you post a photo of what one looks like? is it anything like a "turbine"? is it some kind of special shoe?

this is another good example that proves my point.

Not because I hate some irrational hatred of them (I don't talk **** to my Ole Miss friends/relatives unless instigated), but because I know there are too few resources available for both of us to have simultaneous moderate levels of extended success. It's a survival game for our two programs considering the stage at which we compete (SEC). The better they do and the more attention they get, the harder it is for us to compete and win. I want them to lose to make it easier for us to attract the best of the limited talent that might go to one of our schools.

Jeez, new to board? One of the longest running memes on this site is the "We are M-State" posts whenever anything goes wrong. Few here are under any delusion about our place in the pecking order of SEC programs. However, things change and right now things look decent football-wise.
