I thought this might make us the largest University in the state, but nothing was said about it.

It's also interesting to note that the average ACT score keeps going up with enrollment.

And the Vet School is on our Starkville campus anyway. However, they used to count UMC as a separate entity, but have recently started counting it as a part of UM. Our enrollment includes about 700 students in Meridian and UM's includes about 1,600 in Southaven & Tupelo (maybe somewhere else too, I don't know). USM's would also include their Long Beach & Gautier campuses.

Our main campus is about 17,900 and Ole Miss is somewhere around 15.5. Tupelo, Southhaven and UMC add a significant number to Ole Miss' total. State only gets the 700 enrolled in Meridian. If we keep growing like this (4.4%) it will be hard for them to catch us.

compared to ours AFTER the full year ie retention...kinda like regrading the recruiting rankings(tongue in cheek) but seriously i know they take significant retention hits each year and their 4 year retention rate is damn terrible.

I was on campus last week during the peak of the class changing process. It was wild. It took us twenty to twenty-five minutes to drive from near the stadium to where we eventually had to park around the Student Health Center.

Keenum wants to have 22,000 in the next couple of years. If we do grow to that point, something drastic will have to happen to handle the traffic and parking situation. I think that is a real discussion with the administration now - parking garages versus banning cars for freshmen, etc.

Means we are not only getting more students, but higher quality students too. Munson brings up the interesting point about retention, and I want to say that ours is one of the highest in the SEC. Also, we have worked very hard to cultivate relationships with JUCOs, I would like to know what our number of transfer students are.

The University is really starting to push the bike program on campus but it does not solve the problem of people riding bikes from off campus. I started riding my bike to work everyday this year because I live in the District. Population is increasing in the area that is bike accessable to campus and I have noticed the increase of people who ride bikes to campus. 5 years ago there were very limited bike racks and now there are TONS of racks. Hopefully more people riding bikes will solve a small part of the traffic problem. Plus, its healthy right?

We also need to get a bus system that runs from all the major apartments to campus. Simply putting a bus route down University Dr. to campus would solve another part of the traffic problem. Sooner or later I would like to see them install some sort of trolley system that runs from downtown to the junction. That would be the ****.</p>

I saw our 2008 at 23.6.

Whatever the case, we should be proud of MSU once again showing itself to be the true flagship University in the State.

Higher enrollment, higher rankings, higher ACT, Higher grad rate etc...

Also, our campus looks soooo much better than the other ones in the State.

However, with budget cuts, that may have to be put on hold for a little longer. As soon as they can secure the money to demolish Suttle, they can convert that into parking, and then build the parking garage behind the YMCA/Post Office Building. You are also going to see more classes being offered at night and in the early morning and afternoon. The peak for class time now is 9-12, which both professors and students love, but with an expanding enrollment, you will see more night classes to help spread out the congestion and classroom space.

Just curious, but what does the enrollment number have to do with anything? Does it make a difference in state funding? Does it effect something else? Or is it just a penis measuring contest every year that our fans like to go through?

It seems like every year the enrollment smack comes out, and I really don't get why it matters if one school has 500-1000 more students enrolled than the other. If there is some legitimate effect that enrollment numbers have besides tuition revenue, then it may make some sense.

But they still found a way to buy 200 new ****** bikes to put around campus. While this is a good thing, it would be better to invest this money into a shuttle system down University. I don't even pretend to know how much it will cost, but it seems like it should be next on the list of "things to do". They already have plenty of shuttles running around campus and it would not be that much more to put one or these routes down University. Maybe a 7:30-4:00 route and a 9-12:30 PM for the drunk bus.

but I doubt a difference of a thousand or so students either way makes much of a difference.

I had always wondered why it was such a big deal, because every year it would come out and get a ton of attention.

It matters until you guys get behind. Then all the sudden it does not matter?

I could be a smart *** and tell you to read the story linked at the top of thread, but I'm in a good mood because it's the end of a short work week, we have our SEC opener tomorrow and I'm generally an all-around good guy so I'll just tell you. It's 23.7.

And there is possibility that the university could get a federal grant for "clean energy" to fund th shuttle system, since it would reduce the number of cars on the road.

It doesn't mean a whole lot really. It's just nice that the highest demand University in the State is MSU. We seem to be taking the cream of the crop as far as the student body goes as evidenced by the higher ACT and the better grad rates.

I know none of that matters to the other schools as they have just as many things to be proud about as well I'm sure.

My thread did not say anything about who is the largest university in the state. I simply stated the enrollment which is a new high. Now go back to playing with yourself or whatever it is you do. You have to be the biggest thread hi-jacker there is on these boards.

The way I look at is:
A growing student enrollment = growing alumni base = more future bulldog club members = more fan support = more donations = better facilities = recruiting influence.

For the most part, the largest university campuses by enrollment tend to have strong athletic programs:
1 Ohio State University
2 Arizona State University
3 University of Florida
4 University of Minnesota
5 University of Central Florida
6 University of Texas
7 Texas A&M University
8 Michigan State University
9 University of South Florida
10 Pennsylvania State University
11 University of Washington
12 University of Wisconsin-Madison
13 University of Illinois
14 University of Michigan
15 Purdue University

and if we're talking Oxford versus Starkville campuses only, the difference is a couple thousand, not 500-1000. The universities are relatively the same in terms of academic requirements, tuition, etc, but MSU consistently outpaces UM in terms of enrollment.

Also, it means we produce more alumni year in and year out than Ole Miss does. UM out-fund-raises us, but hopefully with new adminstration that will change.

No, you didn't mention it, but it quickly turned into that, because like I said, it comes up every year, and it almost always turns into a who's the biggest question. That's why I asked whether there was a tangible reason for it to matter by comparison.

I'm not sure. On one hand more people is more money, and more future alumni to give money. On the other, it's more infrastructure, more crowding, more losing the college town feel. Also when you're capped out it creates exclusivity, and average scores would go up. Or is that even allowed with the way the state laws are?

I think 20k would be the max Oxford could hold.
