Article from the reflector from Friday. It would be a great sport to add, and would open up a spot for a new men's sport. Soccer or MSU Hockey?

If I'm not mistaken ncaa regulations regarding equality between mens and womens sports (title IX??) we would have to add a women's sport in order to add a mens sport. If we were to add a beach volleyball team that could very well open the door to transition the Ice Dawgs from club sport to university program. I could be way off about this but I think this is the way it has to go.

with your student body.

MSU is 53% male, 47% female, so roughly 53% of our athletic scholarships should be male. There is a 2% leeway given in Division I

Men's Sports
Football gets 85 scholarships, that's a big number to try to make up.
Basketball 13
Men's Track gets 12.6
Golf gets 4.5
Tennis gets 4.5
Baseball gets 11.7
131.3 scholarships for male student-athletes.

Women's Sports
Softball 12
Soccer 12
Basketball 15
Track and Field 18
Cross Country 12
Indoor Track and Field 18
Golf 6
Tennis 8
Volleyball 12
113 scholarships for female student athletes

There are currently 244.3 athletic scholarships at MSU. 46.2% are female, 53.8% are male. We are within our leeway, but if we want to add a men's sport, we'll have to add a women's sport first.

Men's Soccer, assuming all SEC programs can start since there is tons of money to go around, would the smartest choice. And yes, would assure football team could pick up a kicker if need be. Look around the state at how many talented men soccer players are on select teams that travel across the southeast and are in ODP (Olympic Development Program) training to only get to play soccer at club level at UM or MSU or play at Samford or Millsaps. It is depressing. Justin Mapp from NWR withChicago Fire andMichael Ueltschey from JA that played on national championship team at UNC just to name a few that proves we have good high school and club teams in the past and in thepresent. We are the ONLY major BCS conference without a NCAAmen's soccer team. It needs to happen if they start women's beach volleyball.

...which likely means indoor track since there are already people signed to track scholarships.

Its a 9.9 scholarship sport, so it doesn't kill you. The facilities are already in place, as well, so the upfront costs are minimal.

I think we should add women's rifle like Ole Miss (7.2 scholarships) and beach volleyball (likely 8 scholarships) and men's soccer and we'll remain in line.

The expense of adding ice hockey, although it would be my personal favorite, is unreal. However, if we ever build a new arena, it should be built with the option to actually put ice down.

the other SEC schools. The last thing we need to be doing is adding sports. I say play the minimum we have to and try to be as good at those as we can. No need to spread our money around to more sports than we have to.

it's just that us and UM are the only two schools in the West that don't have it.

Ice Hockey isn't the most practical to add, but it sure does have a following, already. 10,000 people at 4 games for a club team...

Soccer should definitely be the preferred sport over indoor track...Indoor TRACK??? REALLY??????? Does the school prefer that nobody care about the new men's sport???

Agreed on a new arena with ice capabilities

Our track program has been a top 10 program in recent years. Adding scholarships for indoor track (they can run outdoors too, by the way) could make us a title contender. I agree, not exciting, but as far as an instant success - it would allow us to give more track scholarships.
