Unless there are some injuries, MSU has a tourney team. Good PG that is improving every week, strong post presence, and good outside shooters.

Really the only thing missing is depth at PG and PF/C. If Johnson can give MSU quality minutes, and Osby keeps improving, I see MSU running away with the West.

If MSU had Bost last year I think they would have been a #4 seed at least, and Stans would have broken through to the Sweet Sixteen. He may not do it next year, but if Varnado comes back, Im pretty sure he will have a top 20 team headed into the season.

Also, if MSU keeps pushing the ball they are going to be fun to watch, Im not sold on their half court offense, but in transition they are really good.

If we beat LSU, we would have to have a major flop to not at least tie for the west, but we need to see how this team responds to a stretch of road games. Wednesday night will be a real test, one I expect us to fail. Now, how we come out in Athens will tell me alot. It is tough for young teams on the road in the SEC.

I would consider going 1-1 this week a great accomplishment.

8-9 wins away, huh? we have 13 games, plus at least 1 conference game. so 8-9 wins out of 14-15 games?...that seems quite doable.

Auburn twice, Ole Miss twice, Bama once, UGA, USC, LSU at home, Arkansas at home...all 9 of these are winnable. add in the conference tournament game(s)...

...and "winnable" does not equal "should win" or "probably will win." The next two games are huge for us.

Why in the hell would anyone bother following Bracketology and the RPI after 3 conference games? RPI has a lot of shaking out to do as teams play conference games. Bracketology in mid-January is just ludicroush (Mike Tyson), and typical of the ESPN-ification of sports.

Mid-February is when all the hype should be starting and things start falling into place.

/end rant

"the next two being huge"...we are very likely to lose Wednesday, but we have to make sure and beat them when they come to S'ville.

Saturday's game at Georgia to me is the one that is huge- winning that one moves us closer to the NCAA's, losing it probably eliminates our chances.

I hate when people say one loss eliminates our chances for the tournament. The selection is based on a complete body of work, and while a loss at Georgia would definitely hurt our chances, that one loss would not put us out of the tournament. In the same way a win over Wake Forest, the current #1, would not put us in the tournament. Yes, if we lose to Georgia we will have to do more to cover for that loss for us to get in the tourney, but we could still make it. I understand you probably didn't mean that one loss would literally eliminate our tourney chances, but that's just a little pet peeve of mine.

Now to the subject at hand, I think a win at LSU would be a big win for us obviously. Its not a must win, but any road win, especially against LSU who is probably the most experienced team in the SEC, would be a good one. The Georgia game is about as close to a must win as it gets for us in January though just because their RPI is horrendous. More than anything, the RPI hit with that loss would probably be the biggest obstacle for us to get in the tournament.
