Keenum needs to jump on this. Too many opportunities to list. Expanded programs, large population center, added enrollment. Not to mention if handled well, the a demonstration to other campus's that MSU can do what is best for the State. (Coughlormanbranchcough)

It would be great for MSU, and evidently for the Coast. But politically, I don't see any way that it will ever happen.

why doesn't USM think the facility is worth spending money on? Because they already have that market saturated?

That would be something to get a very good understanding of before deeming it a no-Brainer.

Agreed. USM pays quite a bit of attention to it-- more so than I would say that MSU pays to attention to Meridian or Ole Miss to Tupelo or Desoto.

A good I idea and I think MSU should pursue it, but I can hear the rumblings from the USM camp already about how big brother is picking on them again. This situation is kind of like a girl whose boyfriend pays her no attention. Now the girlfriend notices a different guy who is handsomer, richer, and has his crap together. The two become flirtatious, but suddenly the current boyfriend becomes jealous and calls the girlfriend an ungrateful tramp. These are the days of our lives.

The jealous boyfriend typically gets dumped. Let's hope that's what happens here too. Why oh why would anyone in the MSU camp ever care about what happens at USM? Ole Miss is our biggest competition in the state of Mississippi, but USM poses a bigger threat to our immediate success. We need to go ahead and step on their throat and make them a non-factor. You cannot do that by being nice and pacifying them. Get tough, Keenum.

A TON of girls I knew in college left after 2 years to pursue nursing. I know Haley Barbour's proposal a while back to give us MUW had a selling point of adding nursing and culinary arts to our curriculum. This could be that.

But beyond that, you'd have to think offering a chem e degree that close to the beach would be insanely popular and extremely helpful to the gulf coast economy.

A question I have about this situation: Is this campus underdeveloped because of USM negligence (likely given USM's history), or does USM know something we don't? It's not like the Gulf Coast is completely untapped after all. I know South Alabama waves out of state tuition for the coastal counties in MS. Could be the return on investment wouldn't be worth our while.

To be completely honest with you, as a coast rat, I never once met anyone who ever got their degree from there. I knew several people who drove once, twice, sometimes three times a week to Hattiesburg to take classes from THAT USM campus, but I never once met someone who completed a degree at USM Gulf Coast.

I think it's a combination or course offerings and proximity to the actual campus that has made that campus a complete joke.

I also had a ton of friends who went to the MGCCC route to an eventual degree, and again none of them went to USM Gulf Coast, despite USM Gulf Coast being there to facilitate junior college graduates (they only offer junior and senior level courses).

I think William Carey robs a lot of would-be students, specifically older people in the education field. USM isn't equipped to offer anything unique to the area, but we are. Let's do it!

Slight hijack here, but back in the middle 80s I took a night class in COBOL programming at Gulf Park. It was a popular class and a bunch of people signed up. Lectures were ok, I think there were at least two classes, but the hands on lab sucked. There were only about a half dozen terminals, that were hooked up to the main frame in Hattiesburg. We had to sign up to reserve (very limited) time to write our programs. The lab was open all night, so several times I would sign up for the only time available, which was after midnight. One night Hattiesburg had a big freeze and the main frame burned up, because the cooling water system froze. One of my least favorite memories.

Not trying to slander MSU, but if I was in charge of that campus, I would be more inclined to partner with South Alabama. Their main campus is closer, similar in size to MSU, and they already have inroads built to MS Gulf Coast. Actually I think they had shown interest in putting a satellite campus on the MS gulf coast in the past but of course USM threw a hissy fit and had that shot down.

Hospitality/Casino Management and Nursing

A business school should thrive at the Gulf Park campus with the sheer number of Banking, Insurance, and Hospitality related careers on the Gulf Coast. Tulane opened a satelite campus at the Edgewater Mall a few years back just to teach Casino Management courses... they seem to be doing well.

Again, why is USM even a factor here? Why do people pander to them?

Like it or not but USM has connections to politicians, lawyers, and other influential persons just like we do. Its almost a jealousy sort of thing with them on this type of stuff. "The gulf coast is ours and if we can't be successful there, then no one else can either!"

Because the Gulf Coast Campus that they are talking about is a USM campus. It would be a huge deal for that campus to be taken from USM and given to MSU, or even purchased from USM and sold to MSU.

The other issue is for a lot of things, you're going to have to have IHL approval. IHL had to approve USM going to the coast to begin with (I think all the JUCO's fought it) and I would assume you're not getting anything done with the USM campus without their involvement, although I'm not sure exactly what the scope of their powers is.

Definitely cannot argue with any of that. I still just hope, for our sake, we find a way to make the Coast ours in some meaningful way. I love the idea of a Coast campus, and I loved the idea of annexing MUW. Just wish one of them would happen along the line. Seems like MS entities just continue to fight each other for scraps, instead of joining forces and accomplishing more. In this day and age, you almost have to consolidate your resources to compete. Look at what GTRA and LINK have been able to do up there between Starkville, West Point and Columbus. Those folks said that could never been done as well.

of the ones mentioned, casino management sticks out like a sore thumb...don't see State getting involved in that kind of major. I'm no prude, it just doesn't seem to fit its profile.

Sadly, you are probably right....

The IHL will most likely not support adding management courses to support one of the State's largest industries... caSINos. Amazing.

As a person in meridian who stays involved with the campus, I wouldn't say that's correct. Meridian stays a top priority with State. keenum and other representatives are in town all the time and they are currently expanding the downtown business campus for the new nursing school that will open in two years.

Meridian is a pretty big part of the overall plan of the university.

but due to seeing how all this has been handled, I would think the gulf coast campus would be handled well also.

Tulane is also looking to expand. 1st they were looking at a large facility in Diberville with the Ocean Expo development, now I believe they are looking at the old VA properties. So Tulane is looking to make an investment. Too bad their Tuition is 3 times that of MSU.

You also have Ingalls and Stennis on the coast that can benefit from MSU classes as well as NASA Michoud in Chalmette.
