MSU Ice Hockey Team's Future

So, now that our football team has shown us that last season was a complete fluke, how about the ICE DOGS???

Fun Facts:
1. In the team's first homegames for their first season they pulled in over 1200 fans 45 MINUTES AWAY from Starkville, MS. How many of MSU's actual NCAA sports can say they pull that many people?
2. Club made thousands of dollars in ticket and merch sales.
3. Students run every aspect of the team - including the pricey rental and setup/negociating of the Bancorpsouth Arena
4. The school has, so far (from what I have heard), only funded the team with a few hundred dollars.
5. How much funding does the football team, in all its mediocrity, receive? Yes, the team makes money. Then again, the team is given an incredible venue to play in on campus and players have nearly every aspect of athletic life taken care of for them.
6. If a hockey team, which is in its first year, can already put asses in the seats during its first gamenight, even after having suffered terrible losses, imagine what a full University-backed team could do with a place to play locally, better recruits, etc.

Oh yes I'm biased for this team now.
Mostly due to the fact that MSU's football has always been average, with the exception of some fluke successful seasons. I tried my hardest to like football here for the past several years, but it's absolutely impossible now.

Hope everybody enjoys the RIDICULOUS screen put in at Davis Wade. 8 million dollars for a screen used 6 or 7 times a season on a team that annually disappoints.

Fantastic. GO DAWG ICE HOCKEY

Do you actually have a coach, or do you have one guy who sorta leads practices? From the Youtube videos I've seen, Looks like you guys have a lot of fun, sorta the way college athletics should be.

Edited: I think you could make a killing marketing your Hockey shirts. Be the perfect thing to wear to the cold baseball games in March and early April.

you can actually like both. I wanted to make it to the first hockey games in Tupelo but it was the one weekend this fall I hadn't been travelling and wanted to stay home. Tupelo is a 3 hour drive for me. Anyways, it is possbile to support both teams, so even though the football team has disappointed lately, it's the fuel for the entire athletic department. Get the hockey thing going and it will be incorporated into University funds soon enough. We MSU fans just need to support it. Behind football, it is the best spectator sport there is. Well, unless you're bbq'n and drinking beer at The Dude of course.

Edit to add: When y'all come to Nashville to play Vandy, I will definitely be there and plan to bring some other Dawg fans too. I'm hoping this will grow into bigger and better things.

Lets spread our scholarships out even more thin.

No thanks. We'll have to add women's gymnastics or water polo to keep it even...and take more scholly's from baseball and basketball.

Edited for spelling.

www.dawgicehockey.org is the website featuring news updates and scheduling. Merchandise is available to the locale right now and as soon as the team puts up an online ordering process on the site, people pretty much have to come to games in order to purchase.

Like most Mississippians, I didn't know jack about ice hockey.
Then around 1974, UAH started a club team.
I started going to games with a co-worker, who'd played goal for Worchester Tech in Mass.
He 'splained it to me.
After I later married and had kids, who played soccer, basketball and other sports, I could relate the analogies between soccer, basketball, ice hockey, lacrosse, and other (some exotic to MS) sports.

UAH is now a D-I hockey team...the one who hosts the school's annual homecoming, since it's the premier sport at that geek school. Not at the top of that division, obviously, but they did get a national championship at a lower level. While they were coached by Doug Ross, a member of the Miracle on Ice olympic team, their coach for a quarter-century.

I cannot understand poker and billiards being featured on ESPN. Those are sports? Understand, I enjoy playing both, but on TV? Boring as bowling or roller derby...hope that last one doesn't offend you gurls.

Ice hockey is indeed a late-comer to MS, but here in Huntsville, AL, it's been a part of the mainstream youth, college, and minor league professional level for some 30+ years. There are 4 serious rinks within 25 miles of where I'm writing this, and the MSU team has to drive all the way to Tupelo?

As for men's soccer at MSU, I'm all over that too.

Like ice hockey, perhaps boring to those of you who don't understand it, never played it nor had kids who did.

Baseball is boring to many. My son, who turns 25 next Sunday, played baseball from T-ball at 5 through his senior year at Grissom HS. He also played football, basketball, soccer, softball on organized teams and street hockey, tennis, other stuff...and told me baseball was the most mental game. I didn't get that; I guess you actually have to play the sports, which I never did. Hockey's like that, also soccer...if you don't understand it, it's boring. Like when I try to watch VH1.

I wish somebody had the cojones and money to build an ice rink in Columbus, or perhaps out toward the airport. There aren't many roller skate rinks around anymore; an ice rink might actually attract folks, who'd bring their kids out for the novelty. And, to invoke a pun, it's a pretty cool place to go on a summer Saturday.

I'd love to go to Pelham to watch our ice Dawgs play Vandy this Saturday, but it looks like I'll be working.
The Huntsville Havoc's playing on home ice Friday night, that will probably be my hockey fix for the weekend.

Several of our MSU hockey guys are from here in the Huntsville area, where there's a high school division.
My former boss's son plays on the Bama hockey team.

To make this a sports post (?), I'll close with a basketball signoff...
GTH BAMA!

Well ,Patrick, I for one admire you guys. I played club rugby at State and I know how hard it is to pull it off..
I hope to catch one of your games. If it were up to me , I would say you get full funding. But we all know the liberals, pinkos, and fem nazis have to get equal shares. You would probably out draw women's basketball if you played the same number of games. It sucks, but that's the feel good world we live in.

Those guys are paying their own expenses, carrying the MSU banner...

It's not something you are paying money for, as a member of the Bulldog Club, which I'm assuming you are.

So why do you give a rip about their W/L at this point? Don't you want MSU to win in all sports?

Especially guys who are forking money out of their own pockets to play, wearing MSU gear?

What's your personal involvement? The coach may not be getting paid by MSU. If so, probably not very much.
Why would he be on a hot seat?

RCD

PS - this is their first year in competition. Do you think they should be undefeated? Are you even a hockey fan?

Our coaches name is Mike Mayhew and he is from Windsor, ON, Canada. Mike played professional hockey from 1993-2000 for teams all around the southeast including the Tupelo T-Rex. His professional stats can be fouend online at www.hockeydb.com Coach earned a hard-nosed reputation for his intense and gritty game play. After the T-Rex disbanded, Mayhew dicided to hang up the skates and stay in Tupelo. He is currently a Deputy Sheriff in Lee County where he lives with his wife and two daughters.

He does this **** for free Jackass.

is just a novelty thing and fan interest will wear off in a few years Ex. Jackson Bandits... Either way, I wish y'all the best... But there is no need to rail on football to support your point.. It pisses people off more than it helps them side with you
