MSU is the SEC's tallest defensive unit

Main reason I wrote this is because in every Bama game, the announcers talk about Bama's length and how much that helps when the field is shortened. I decided to average the height of every SEC projected starting defense. MSU is the longest unit in the conference.

Interesting side note: Ole Miss is the shortest. I ended up going with D Jones starting at CB since their official depth chart said so. It wouldn't shock me if Mike Hilton beat him out. He currently listed at #2 at CB and Huskey. If Hilton starts, they average under 6 feet on defense.

Now what does this mean? Statistically I can't find any trend to identify if this matters. Announcers love to beat this to death in Bama games but what say ye six pack? Does team length on defense matter at all?

Its not the length of a player that matters its how you use him.

And a squad full of 6'6 players that can't play, can't play. There is no statistical tendency I see that says being longer helps but I always hear about how it does. So what, if any, is the advantage of MSU being so long? Is there a position group where it matters more?

In order to find a coorelation, you would have to balance height with talent level and see which teams the height really benifits. Being tall doesn't make a player good, but I think it's fair to say that at many positions, being tall is better than being short. Thus talented tall player > talented short player.

Problem with finding this coorelation though, is that you can't be sure that what made the team better was height or coaching.

I think it's common sense that, in a sport with boundaries, height and length is valuable, however, being able to use stats to find a statistal coorelation is almost impossible.

I would look at the NFL more than college, because, in the NFL, the talent and coaching levels are more similar across the board.

The top to botton don't appear to be a big spread

unless I'm reading this wrong, looks like about an inch and a half, or so.

I'd say this would be a non issue.

Now throw in say a four inch advantage, & that would seem to be a issue, especially in the pass lanes.

So (height * number of stars) should let us know if we really won the championship in February? Because that is the true measure of a successful team, on the field results be damned.**

I'll try to help.

Found out I'm 1/1024th Native American. Maybe I can bring powerful medicine to counter Curse.
