A strong possibility according to the other side: http://newsok.com/article/3703554

Not sure if I like this idea or not... but it could potentially help our recruiting in Texas(where we just hired the best recruiter in the history of that state as our WR coach)...

I don't care for it either. We need an easy one to start the year.

No, no, and double no. Get back to me with decent OOC opponents after we've got a 5+ year bowl streak going and several seasons with more than 6 regular season wins.
The only selling point for a prime matchup that season is Russell as a senior.

I don't know if I like playing them at this point in time. However, playing JSU, South Alabama, UTMartin........sucks. I don't give a damn if it is an easy win or not. These games like UTMartin that all SEC teams are scheduling........are ridiculous.

WHich my point is, I like scheduling a FBS opponent better than a FCS. But let's not schedule a FBS school fielding top10 teams.

Sounds inviting...

I think it would be good for us if it is at a place like Houston and we are only committed to one year. We wouldn't really have much to lose; the risk would be on OKie St's part.

I have been opposed in the past, but I'm warming up to it.

It's not the best matchup for us, especially with us losing Slay, Banks, and Broomfield after this year. But I think it's time we start trying to get on the national scene against some better opponents. We can't hang in this weak nonconference mode forever while other SEC teams we recruit against get national exposure nonconference games every year.

I think next year is a bit early, but I would be in favor of one in 2014. It's time we start doing some stuff to get our name on the national stage, and I think finding a good BCS team to play on an opening weekend in the near future would be an amazing opportunity for us.

It could go both ways. It will be nice to get to a playing level where we can consistently beat and compete with OOC opponents. Then again, we play in the SEC west and wins come at a premium. We need some easy wins.

A weekend in Houston, maybe catch a 'stros game, eat some good tex-mex... What's not to like? It's a bowl game atmosphere to start the year. Sign me up.

What's wrong with ya'll?

In Sherrill's 2nd year we went to Texas and whipped their ***. In Dan's 5th we're scared of OK St at a nuetral site?

We like winning games. And the simple fact is there's a decent chance we could lose to Oklahoma St. in Houston. At least we should have a pretty good team next year, so we should get a decent bowl even if we do lose.

Don't like it. we aren't lsu or bama. maybe after a five consecutive bowl games would i consider opening with them. i wouldn't mind playing them as a part of mid season maybe in between two cupcake OOC teams.

I'd rather lose to a good team than act like we accomplished something for beating south Alabama. Our non-conference schedule this year is an embarrassment.

If we win, it's great

It gives us confidence and could propel us into or higher into the top 25.

If we lose, it could a disaster for our season. A gamble for sure

Then you are a dubmass.

Our schedule is already one of the toughest in the country even WITH 4 crap OOC games. Most schools get more crap in conference games than we do. And almost none outside the SEC get as many top 20 games as we do, even when you add a tough OOC game or 2 to their schedule.

I like it

As long as we play a weak ooc opponent the following weekend; which I think is scheduled to be @UAB that year for wk 2. Don't remind me about last year there.

All we have to lose is pecking order for bowl games. And I would trade that for a fun, bowl-like weekend in Houston to end the summer. What we have to gain is a possible W over a reputable opponent, and national recognition on a weekend known for ****** matchups. As we stand now, hard for me as a fan to get excited about driving 5 hours to vegas for JSU and USA in the same month, why not make one of those more interesting even with the risk of an L? I know we need to schedule down to get 6 wins in a year and go bowling, but hopefully we can move past teetering on that threshold after this year and can take a gamble on one game... hopefully.

Pros beat cons for me.

HELL NO!

We need to be stringing together winning seasons and bowl appearances. This makes it more difficult.

Houston is about as ****** of a city as anywhere in the entire U.S. of A! That is what not to like... and I was born there and have some strong feelings about being Texan by the grace of God, but you take anything related to Houston and the surrounding metropolitan area and I say thanks but no thanks!

I also agree that playing OSU is NOT a good idea at this moment in time, ie. Oregan with JWS.

Now give me someone like TCU in Cowboy's Stadium and you might get my butt on a plane and back on U.S. soil for that game!

I'm more than fine with as many non conference patsies as we can get. The SEC gauntlet is plenty entertaining / challenging.

Let me put it this way

If I was given the choice between playing OSU in Houston for a non-conference game and having the Egg Bowl on Thanksgiving, I would choose playing the Egg Bowl on Thanksgiving without hesitation and not think twice about it.

Playing Oklahoma State does not makes sense for us unless it's in the Cotton Bowl.

Look- I love Dan and what we're doing, but for a reality check- we went 6-6 last year during the regular season. That was WITH our weak non-conference schedule. You know what one game down in the bowl pecking order is for us? HOME. Oh yeah- and that was with us barely beating La Tech at home- thank you God that Chris Relf's last throw was his best one. And yes, La Tech was a pretty good team- which actually helps me make my point even further.

A REAL bowl game is 10X better than a pre-season bowl game. People are not in "football mode" in August for one thing. Not like they are in Dec/Jan anyway. A bowl you get better exposure in my opinion- you're more than likely the only college game on, or at least you are on during a day where people constantly flip back and forth between games. And maybe the most important thing is the bowl practices which are extremely vital to a growing program like MSU's.

Playing UT-Martin may not be "exciting"- but the reality is if we play someone like Georgia Tech- to win that game we're going to have to play all of our starters a good bit of the game. This gets them beat up and it also prevents us from developing depth because we have to sit our younger players on the bench whereas against UT-Martin, we at least get some players some reps and that can help us out down the road against people like Alabama and LSU. It also takes pressure off of our team because four "easy" wins means all we have to do is at least take care of business.

We can have a very attractive schedule doing something like this:

In state SWAC team for the opener- good for the state, easy win for us. Allows us to get things off on the right foot.
Tulane on the road. I think I speak for all when I say that I would rather go to NOLA than Houston.
Middle Tennessee for homecoming. OK- this is a tired tradition, but every respectable football program has a frat day.
South Alabama- play them one week before the Egg Bowl. Really, taking into consideration the other non-conference games- this is the "most boring".

couldn't have put it better. every team other than top 4-5 teams in the country need a warm up game to get things started. i want us to get there eventually and be able to have the team and depth to play a team like like OSU to start the season, but i don't think we are there yet. we saw what happen to Georgia when they played a tough game to start the season and Georgia was a tough team.

or Jerry World. If we are going to HAVE to play it, I say why not there. To me it's closer, and a game there would be awesome.

Love the idea and agree that this exposure is good for us. I like it being in Houston, plus we have a large alumni base there. As far as playing Okie St., I'm not scared! Sure they have a strong program but in the trenches we are more than they want to deal with and we are from a tougher, more aggressive league. Bring it

Sounds like a lot of you guys missed your calling

As a USM fan. They've been stringing together winning seasons based around ****** schedules for almost 30 years. And what has it got them? A 35000 seat stadium that's half full of "fans" that follow SEC teams on the side just to stay interested. If we can't win 3 SEC games, then what the 17 are we doing here? We don't deserve a bowl at 2-6. And maybe our coaches know something we don't. Have you guys considered what our 2014 roster can look like? Maybe they're gearing up for bigger and better things. We can't control the schedule, so just sit back and enjoy.

I see it as a win/win as long as OK State is still ranked highly.

If we win we get instant credibility... if we lose its not that bad because they are highly ranked. This is different than in the past where we would play mid-tier BCS teams and lose to most of them.

Seems to me that no SEC team should be embarrassed by its OOC schedule regardless of what teams they play.

I like Jerry's Dome much better. Houston is just a **** hole. It could be like playing our bowl game first. We still have to play LSU,BAMA, HOGS (there), A&M (there), Tenn (there). That is much harder than the Cowboys schedule. A loss means no room for 17 ups or we will be playing the School up North to go bowling that year....

Because the reality is that Houston is a bigger recruiting and alumni market for us than Dallas.

The Houston alumni chapter is the largest one outside of Mississippi - and, yes, I do live in Houston so I'm a bit biased.

I'm not 100% opposed to it... for next year.

Normally I say take the 4 cupcakes and move on, that should be the standard every year. But next year we could be ranked pre-season. We should have a Senior QB, a veteran O Line, a stable of good experienced Running Backs, Veteran D Line (even better if Autry isn't one and done), and a good deep corp of Linebackers. Granted we'll be breaking in some new receivers and D Backs.

If they move forward with this then I feel the staff is very confident in the team this year.

but then you get into a question of whether a the SEC deserves all those top 20 teams if they are only proving anything against each other and not outside the conference. obviously the SEC's top has been the best for 6 years now, but if the middle tier isn't playing anyone but other SEC teams, it's impossible to know if these are top 20 teams or not. and to me, bowl games outside of the national championship are kinda of a pointless measure because the players are using the game as a vacation, not prepping for it like a real regular season game.

The SEC answers that question every bowl season by consistently winning mroe bowls than it loses, despite the fact most of the SEC's bowl matchups put a lower finishing SEC team against a higher finishing team from another major conference. And the SEC still wins. And don't think for a second that every team that plays an SEC team in a bowl doesn't get up for that game. They know it's a big chance for them.
