Two Mississippi State University students are recovering after their parents say the two smoked marijuana that they believe was laced with something very dangerous.
"He was just manic, and he was not the same person at all," parent Denise Tate said. "He's lost ten pounds in two weeks since he's been in Starkville."
Tate described how her son, 18-year-old Bailey Tate, had changed in the days since he left Madison for MSU.
"He always told me that he thought marijuana was safer than alcohol because that's what he's heard on TV, and it's already legal in some states," Tate said.
Tate said that false sense of security is what landed Bailey in the hospital, because she believes that pot was laced with a designer drug making the rounds in Mississippi.
"Oh gosh, every single symptom he had is described in this drug," Tate added.
12px;">That drug, she believes, is something called 25I, similar to LSD, which can sometimes lead to hallucinations, music euphoria and even death.
Craig Tate said his son Bailey was up all night playing music, talking a mile a minute.
Then they brought him to the hospital.
"The doctor came back, and sure enough, all he had was a little pot in his system," Craig said.
"It doesn't explain [what happened]. He's on the total opposite end of what pot does," Craig added.
Craig said doctors have told him five MSU students have been admitted in Jackson with similar symptoms in recent days.
One of those is someone Bailey's family knows well- 19-year-old Christian Jayroe.
"He's been in an institution here to try to get leveled out," Chris Jayroe said. "He got checked in Thursday at 5. It's now Saturday, and I saw my son today, and he's not changed."
What's most frightening to Chris is an apparent lack of information.
"The doctors don't even know what they're dealing with. That's the saddest part of it -- scariest part," Chris said.
The Drug Enforcement Administration says 25I and similar synthetic LSD compounds have been linked to the deaths of at least 19 people aged 15 to 29 between March 2012 and August 2013.
That's why these parents decided to share their stories, to let others know the substance is out there, even in Mississippi.
"For them to just think they're smoking pot, and someone's lacing it with something that's toxic and can cause them to be brain dead, and kill them, it's terrible," Denise said.

Thanks for sharing. This should be taken seriously. Seems to be a growing problem. I know these and other situations. Sad and frightening.

Sounds like they were smoking some high powered Spice or "bath salts".

This is damn scary as a parent. I told my

Daughter to not even let someone else give her a drink of anything, do it all yourself.

Synthetics are never a good choice because of this exact situation.

I don't have short term memory loss only long term brain damage.

The biggest problem is that these kids are treating it like LSD which it isn't at all. I've been reading up on it. I know I'm getting old b/c I had never heard of it. Basically, acid is relatively safe in moderation per studies. It has never been attributed to a pharmaceutical (sp?) death. Maybe jumping off a bridge but not death due to it being toxic. This 25i crap is a completely different compound. A 1.75 mg dose will kill you. A 1.5 mg dose will send you to the loony bin per studies. Why in the hell someone would want to try something that dangerous is beyond me.

The riskiest thing we had were bad mushrooms from the south farm cow patties. There were quite a few stamps to lick if you knew where to look, but pretty benign compared to this.

I will never understand why people gravitate towards substances that are man made with an at home chemistry set. What the 17 is the appeal- the total lack of consistency and tolerance? Wee, sounds fun!

Awful to see this is happening at the university.

The scary part of this drug is the fact that the 2 Madison kids that are in the hospital are still trippin. It has been close to a week now. Although they have come down considerably they are still showing signs of the drugs effect.

I hope you are joking because if not then you need to delete this post.

What has happened has been devastating to these families. You are talking about one kid dead, two in jail with futures probably ruined and two who may have lasting brain damage. No joking matter in my book. These are kids that had their whole lives in front of them just a few weeks ago.

Gonna be a shame for you to get put in timeout right before football season. Use better judgment.

Thanks to DOA. And his end of baseball season timeout was one of the best

things to happen to this board. Edit: Sorry D@A

Although it looks like HD6 is going to make him DOA

Appreciate it D@A. As someone that knows both of these families and kids, what they are going through is not something anyone needs to experience with their son or daughter. These families came forward in an attempt to shed light on this situation in hopes that if it just helps even one other kid and their family avoid what they are going through. On Monday night, the Chapel of Memories was packed tight with kids standing in the aisles praying for their friends while one of these dad's spoke to them. Again, this is a sad situation and so I appreciate the policing of idiots.
