Mississippi State University acknowledges that it contacted the
Southeastern Conference office in January of 2010 regarding an issue
relating to its recruitment of Cam Newton.

Shortly after the initial call, the SEC office requested specific
information to include interviews with involved staff from MSU.

Due to MSU dealing with ongoing and time-consuming eligibility issues
involving non-football matters in the winter and spring of 2010, the
specific SEC request went unfulfilled. Some additional information was
provided to the SEC during July of 2010. Once the NCAA enforcement
staff became involved, Mississippi State University cooperated fully
with its investigation. MSU is confident the SEC office has managed
this process consistent with its established procedures and the
university is committed to the conference’s ongoing efforts to ensure
compliance with SEC and NCAA rules.

while we wanted to make sure the SEC office was aware of what we knew about Cam's recruitment we were maybe a little reluctant to get neck deep in this thing and held off. And I can understand why given the tar and feather treatment we are receiving from Auburn and other places who are mad we are bringing this slimy ordeal out in the light.

He's got to be involved somehow for us to throw this down. Let's see how the press plays this.

if we really wanted to put the screws to Newton, we would have provided follow-up info immediately.

Or the SEC is asking us to just pretty much lie about the timeline b/c they are catching so much heat.

We report being approached to buy a player for $180k, we report it in January, and ignore follow-up requests until July? Somebody make me feel better about this statement...

that Cam's eligibility didn't impact our season so we were in no hurry to respond. As it turns out, his eligibility not only affected our season, but also Oregon's, TCU's, Boise's, LSU's, and possibly Ohio State's and Wisconsin's. We might have also thought that the delay in the spring would have been over sooner than July.

And we were essentially a man down in the AD when Stricklin moved up to AD. Not that it is a complete excuse, but we did have a lot going on now that I think about it.

along with Sidney were all going on. We were in a transition mode and I don't think we put it at the top of the list. Live and learn.

Lots of basketball stuff to deal with that were actually dealing with OUR players instead of someoneelse's.

known the impact that having Newton was going to have at this level. Yeah, he was great in JUCO but that doesn't normally translate into instantly being the most dominant player in Division 1 right after transferring.

jumped into the picture in July and the SEC made us get re-involved. At any rate this statement leaves us with some questions to answer if we want to dodge a truck load of bad PR.

To me, it's still preposterous that a delay in interviews with our staff would give them a sufficient out for sitting on this and not doing their due diligence, but in the NCAA's world, I'm sure it's totally acceptable.

The silver lining that I take from that statement is that we reported shortly after the Auburn commitment and then followed up in July. Both of those dates are before we were beaten by Auburn and even before we knew Newton would be worth a damn - so it couldn't be sour grapes in that context. I suppose we still could have had sour grapes by not getting a commitment in the first place, but that essentially would mean we made the entire story up OR were stupid enough to turn ourselves in - both of which are not likely for obvious reasons. Nonetheless, the gap between reporting and followup for such a significant allegation is a bit sketch...

It does not help/hurt the situation. The SEC asked us to make this statement. Like someone else said, we are aiding the SEC because they sat on what is now the biggest news story in the sports world.

and my bet is Tennessee. You know that the NCAA was all up the *** of some orange in the spring and early summer. There were some serious basketball improprieties to check out. And oh yeah, the child prince and the shrimp boat captain had just left ....leaving a frat-house mess that smelled all the way to Indianapolis. (Rebel Bruiser says even the baseball team is under the gun.)

The NCAA got wind of a couple of orange 17ups and got with the SEC to coordinate investigations. slive had to have dropped the dentures in his lap. "Oh yeah.....we were just about to call you about that."

SEC ramps up the previously sat upon Cam Newton file from MSU and starts to investigate ....just like they should have all along. I am willing to bet that the file was in a big stack on LT's desk where he put it back in January.

I also have a feeling that the NFL and the FBI have been working this and other player agent cases really hard since last year. The NFL's in-house investigation team is considered one of the absolute best. (former FBI agents who know the history and all the dirty players in the agent game.) They could provide invaluable information and direction to the FBI and to the NCAA. I'm sure that bit of help is greatly appreciated by both parties. And in the end, the NFL wins also by helping to clean up the swamp of agents, runners, hangers-on who really add the criminal and/or thug element to the league.

This is the tip of the iceberg....and we (MSU) may have started the avalanche by reporting a rogue agent to the SEC. We are about to see a nationwide collegiate sports implosion that may just help clean some of the stink from the sport. I really think that we will all be shocked at the outcome of what looks to be a somewhat isolated incident.

There's simply too much money at stake for the cheating to significantly diminish.

Programs and boosters will simply learn tactical lessons from this and carry on.

This is unbelievable. Scorched earth policy at its best right here boys. We'll see how all this works out, but it won't be good for the Mississippi schools.

before signing day. They responded with, 'show us something concrete'.

We take our sweet time because we have proof and when we give it to them matters not one damn bit. THey can point to the time it took us to give them whatever. We can point to the amount of time they had the proof and the start of the season.

In the end the facts are the facts.

Auburn better start producing them at the rate we are.

statement as the school being sick of the SEC not stepping and saying what's going on. We are tired of all the "throwing aburn under the bus" statements and want to set the record straight as to what went down, as far as us reporting this goes. Slive is worthless. He should be fired, but that won't happen.
