My wife was showing me these pictures from FB last night and I said that I had zero memory of any pool on campus mid thru late 70's. She said that she remembered it and there were some comments recalling swimming as late as 84/85? How I spent 4.5 years here and have no recollection of it I have no idea. Certainly remember McCarthy in the background having seen Skynard and played BKB there and guess that's the "tin gym" folks talk about that I don't remember at all either.

Based on the picture, looks like those 2 things sat in here and I just wasn't very observant or ever had the need to go swimming. Assume Sanderson basically replaced all of it?

I grew up in Starkville and vividly remember learning and playing “gutterball” as a wee lad near 8-10 there. That would mean it was early 90s.

Found this online, assuming it is accurate?

The swimming pool and poolhouse were completed in 1935, and demolished around 2005. Architect Harry W. Stevens completed the design.

My roommate and best friend would go to the pool, park it at the deep end with the boom box and crank the mix tapes. The cute blonde lifeguard who otherwise did not like the sight of us would make requests for songs.

I was there mid 80’s and have no memory of the pool but do remember the racquet ball courts. Played racquetball there and at the park over off Hwy 25.

I got there in 96 and don't remember a pool there. The Sanderson opened in 98 according to the inter webs but I would have sworn it was there my whole time. Of course, my first 2 years were mostly me running amok in a drunken stupor so that's understandable.

I was there 99 to 04 and have no memory of an outdoor pool.
That's wild.

It never fails to suck when I learn of stuff I missed because I was largely a waste of a student!

Same here. Got hit in the face with a racquetball there because I was looking back into the Sun & didn’t see the ball coming from the same direction.

another incident at the intramural fields next to those courts. We werehitting softballs & someone came up with the idea to pitch me a golf ball. I half swung but still hit it roughly a mile. So we were having fun doing that until I pitched a golf ball to one of my friends. It went way too close to my head way too fast. We quickly realized that was a very bad idea.

I was a freshman in the fall of 1997. They closed it the Spring or summer before and cemented it in. I believe there was an expensive fix needed and the Sanderson Center had been approved so the university decided to close it. I played racquetball on those courts and intramural basketball in the tin gym where I hit a three over Kevin Cooper.

Sanderson opened Summer of '98.

I was at State from '71 - '78 and parked many times in the McCarthy Gym parking lot and walked to classes from there. In all those years I never noticed a swimming pool, especially one that large. Now I wouldn't get a wink of sleep thinking how I could have missed that huge facility.

The pool and Tin Gym were basically where Charles Lee sits now.

I can remember seeing the pool every home football game in the 80s. Because we parked ibehind McCarthy and made our way through to Scott field. Btw it cost $0 to park there back then.

it was open in the early 90s too. But we never used it, swam at college station.

Btw. Just curious, why did they NOT build the new Duff building closer to Creelman?

The green area is nice. But seems like wasted space and we lost parking outside Fresh. Just curious ..... maybe it is a construction engineering issue to build over MCarthy.

I remember that pool. They had an intramural innertube water polo league there in the summer.

I remember the intramural league as well. I had just transferred in from juco and thought that was a great/odd/fun idea. I think my roommates team won the ‘league’.

sure, they were next to the pool hall downstairs in the Union, across from the book store. I saw them every time in went in the pool hall, but never used them, 1971-1975.
Yep. Played on them a few times. Saw Bulldog Bruce and Brad Winkler rolling a few in there back in the day.

I went swimming there a few times. I graduated in '79 and it was there the whole time I was at State.

The bowling alley was there during my years of 72-76. Also had a barbershop next to the entrance of the bowling alley. Could get a steak, baked potato, salad, bread, and drink for $1.25 on Monday nights in the Perry cafeteria. It a was great.

Born and raised in Starkville and remember thinking is was gonna drown in that pool because I couldn’t stand up. Also, it had a very ‘tall’ shelf between the deck and the water line.
