I would encourage everyone to sign up and play. It's a fun tournament. If you don't have a partner to play with, call Parham Bridges at 601-956-1105 and let them know. They'll try to find a partner for you.

BTW fishwater, I think I finally figured out who you are. Did we have a conversation with J. Martin the morning of July 4 at Bridges?

You stand there at the net while your partner serves and you call the return out. You are just on the court.

I can remember my Mom had this joke where everyone would be warming up and she would stand on the side yelling "out." Everyone asked what she was doing and she told them that was her way of warming up. I guess you had to be there.</p>

is truly a sight to behold. And yes, there is usually free beer (and sometimes free margaritas).

back before I went off to live in Starkville and I put my tennis racket down,

I could crush pretty well any public school tennis team member I played. Invigorated with that confidence, I thought about trying out for the tennis team at Prep for my senior year. So, I played the worst player on the team to size him up. He hit the ball so damned hard I never saw it cross the net. I don't think I got a single game off of him.

I know. It's not a real sport. But, I thought I would relay the information. Why? I don't know.

They asked if I played college sports. I laughed and I did say 50 years old.

And once again, are you playing this weekend and what level?

But I'll be damned if I'll ask you about your quickness!

Edited to add that yes I will be playing this weekend. My partner is MrMeoff who used to post here. We'll probably play at 3.0, but if the field there looks weak, we'll step up to 3.5.

it was a different sport at Prep than it was at Clinton, Raymond, Byram, and the various S. Jackson public schools. A far different sport. I don't know if it is still that same way or not. Tennis, golf, and now baseball from what you guys say....

My guess is the Jxn public schools can't even put a tennis team together. Too many bullets to dodge at Battlefield, Tennis South, etc.

was kind of the Prep/JA of Vicksburg. That's why our tennis team was good - it was a country club atmosphere.

Possibly one of the top 5 and easily the top in Class 3A which is where their enrollment would put them. I do think that Madison Central could probably take them in most years though.

state rankings, national rankings...national tourneys early on in their playing careers...it was crazy....other private schools couldn't get a win in any pairing....

Oh how foolish I was.....I was a little cocky, liked to drill people right in the chest when they charged the net, had all the right equipment, took tennis magazine.

One game and I was humbled. And this guy was by far the worst on the team.

If that is the case, things have fallen very, very badly.

When I was at Prep, it would be hard to imagine any other school coming anywhere close. Every player was ranked in the state. And there were times they were ranked consecutively without a gap.

And a few who have actually played Div. I-A collegiate tennis. Like I said, Prep would be a dominant tennis school in MHSAA, but there are a few public schools that would give them all they want.
