First if all, the excuse "they sneaked up on us" is pitiful. What you are saying when you throw that excuse out there is that your coach is an idiot who did nothing to prepare the team for that particular game. Who in the hell did we sneak up on? By mid-season, everybody had more than enough film on us to know our tendencies. Using that excuse basically admits that you're an idiot.

The coaches we faced are smart enough to know that they were going to be in for a tough game. We didn't sneak up on them.

One team might have. But at half time, when they were tied with us and had the chance to do something, they folded.
