i'm not sure if i'm surprised or just amazed that we can't sell out a single game until the day before, when this could be our 7th 17ing win... not to mention only the 7th win in 10 years.

i think if we lose mullen in a couple of years, it's because he's burnt out on trying to get fans to gets their asses in the seats. why is this such a problem?

People will be there. Our fan base is just to comfortable being able to pull up Saturday and grab a ticket. I personally have 4 or 5 friends that call every week checking on a ticket. They didn't realize it would be this tough this year, and I know they will be buying season tickets next year.

huge fan base, the ****** proportion of the fan base is more glaring. And I don't think there is a fan base alive that can find more **** to do other than the football game. I run into people all the time proudly sporting their MSU stuff and if I ask them if they are going to the game, they hem and haw to the point that you realize they never go to a game. And these are professionals and doctors even, so it isn't a money issue.

It would've been sold out weeks ago...

That's what I don't get about this whole expansion arguement. We barely sell 56,000 tickets as it is now. Why do peoplethink we can sell 10-15k more? I'm all for upgrading our stadium, but I don't want to see 10,000 empty seats every week.

He needs to count the hotels in and close to Starkville. Also, he should check the population of the surrounding areas. Unless people can get a room in one of 5 maybe 6 hotels, or have an extra $140+ thousand to buy a condo, they have nowhere to stay. The logistics really aren't in place to fill up the stadium we have. Its a feat to continue to sellout with people not having enough places to stay.

We also keep 17ing people who have motorhomes and travel trailers, by putting them down by Crawford. I have a travel trailer but don't feel like camping on batteries and propane when they used to have power hookups. If we want to fill an expanded stadium the university and city are going to have to accommodate for more weekend visitors.

I'm pretty sure both Ole Miss and Auburn have trouble filling their stadiums.

We are actually averaging more fans per game than OM this season.

I really think that's the biggest problem we face. Oxford is close enough to I55 and to Memphis for it to be very convenient for a good chunk of their base to make it to game day. Auburn has I85. No problems there either.

We have highways 82 and 25. Granted, they are much more friendly these days versus decades past. However, whether merited or not, I think too many people view Starkville as a pain in the *** drive and don't try to make it every week. It's just not an "easy" drive - as viewed by most.

if ole miss were 6-2, they would be selling SRO tickets to a game like this. Auburn holds about 87K. They have drawn over 87K for every game against a BCS opponent.

Lack of hotels is a terrible excuse.

And I would much rather drive 25 from Jxn than 55 all the way to batesville and over. 25 is a piece of cake now.

And if you love interstate, go to Winona and over. 82 is pretty easy as well.

I had planned on going if we the early kickoff but that night kickoff squashed me getting to come up. Know several other guys that have the same problem.

Take it across the whole fan baseand I bet that's 2-3K easily that won't be coming just b/c of having to take the kids trick or treating.

I've missed 4 home games since 2000, mainly because I lived in Houston, TX. Every game I drive to, I dread highways 25 and 45. Mainly because the speed traps by every little community who employs one police officer and he sits on the major highway, while people rob the community blind. Also, the stops and slower speeds along with slow *** people pulling out all make those stretches of highway aggravating. I can see where older fans don't drive especially for later games. They don't want to drive back on those ****** roads. Which goes back to my point of them having nowhere to stay. Also, our hotel policy of having to stay 2 nights. That doesn't help in our current economy. None of these things keep me from going, but for the fan that can be as happy watching it on tv, they prevent them from coming.

Is the AD organizing a kids trick or treat event during the day that might help some fans make it rather than bail for trick or treating that night?

Sure, day time trick or treating isn't the same as night time, but some kids might not care - especially the smaller ones. That might help the crowd a little if these same folks weren't planning on getting their tickets to people that can go.

Finally, what ever happened to trick or treating on Halloween?

get this: i couldn't get a hotel room for UAB game a month ago, but got rooms for Kentucky and Arkansas game.. how 17ed up is that?

now: say we have 8 hotels in starkville at 100 room average, and west point has what, 3 at 100 room average.. that 1100 rooms at 3 ppl average.. that's only 3300 people accommodated by hotels in 2 different towns. maybe you add columbus and get it up to 4500 or so.

I'll agree with the hotel argument, the lack thereof sucks. but i'm not buying it as an excuse for not coming to a game..

i'll also agree with the fact that Starkville and the University needs to step up when it comes to RV's and motorhomes. they also need to step up and encourage some hotels to come to town. the City does have 2 in the works, so that's a start.

I don't get your point about Hwy 25. We live in the NW Rankin area, hit Hwy 25 and drive to our home in Browning Creek each week. I put the cruise on 70 and there is one stop in Louisville. It is 113 miles from point A to point B and it take us and hour and forty minutes. Hwy 25 is much like an Interstate! 17 a bunch of excuses!

you could double the number of hotels in starkville and you are only talking about 2400 more people.

Plus, its hard to lure a hotel to come to Starkville for 7 weekends a year.

OM is an easy, easy drive from Memphis. 78 to 7 and you are there. This helps them greatly with their tickets sales for their fans and visiting fans. Not to mention, visiting fans (from great distances) can fly into Memphis, lodge in Desoto County and have an hour drive to the game.

Last year, I went to the Ga Tech game. Not even close to a sell out. It was hell finding a room within a reasonable distance. Even then, I only found a room at the HGI in Starkville at a ridiculous price. But yes, based on the games and attendance, I think it obvious the majority of our attendance comes from the local area. Therefore, I don't think it is a hotel room issue for this game. However, hotel availability and the location of Starkville doesn't help our attendance at all. I admire Mullen's effort to continue the sell-outs. However, what is completely surprising is that State sold out games vs anyone other than Auburn and Alabama. You look at the past, even during the Jackie's years, we never came close to selling out vs Memphis or someone like Alcorn State.

traffic flow after a game where we have a huge crowd and most people are leaving at the same time. I'm in Lot 36 and its total mayhem. We are basically using kids to act as security and direct traffic and I don't know who gives them direction but they don't have the foggiest clue what they are doing. Every game the flow out of our Lot is different and even on the same night sometimes they will let you go out of the Lot left to hit Perry Street and go out (which makes things easy) and sometimes they won't and force you up to Collegview Street which usually makes for about an hour delay getting out because NOTHING moves going that way. Last week after the game they actually had the nerve to move the barrier going left out of the Lot in place AFTER I had already pulled out into the road to go that way nearly causing me to have an accident with the traffic coming up from the other way to my left. I was irked to say the least and after jawing with them for a few seconds was forced to go back in reverse and go back into the mess going up by the Hump. I have already vowed that if things don't significantly improve I am done with Thursday night games altogether and will automatically sell those tickets from now on. I can't deal with any more unnecessary 90 minute delays trying to get back home on a worknight due to pure incompetence like I did with the Auburn game this year.

In the fact that it is a road, 4 lanes, and vehicles travel on it. Did you not read what I wrote? People do not like driving at night on highways. People, mainly slow paced country people, can pull out anywhere at any moment, and not to mention they can easily turn down the wrong direction and be driving against traffic. How often does this happen on interstates? How many people pull out from a complete stop onto interstates? Older fans do not like driving back late with these potential hazards.

And driving 100 miles is a piece of cake for people who live close. But try 300+ miles every week like I do along with a lot of others. Interstates are a ton easier but hwy 25 is a lot better than it was.

State doesn't need a 70,000 seat stadium. However, State desperately needs to enclose the northendzone and put chairsback in the premium seating along the west and east sides and more suites on the west. This could bring the stadium to about 60K. Chairsbacks' = less seats and increased $demand$ for those seats. Everyone else gets pushed down or to the east side. The students get more seating too.

I myself, a nervous nelly, drive down highway 25 harboring great fear andanxietythat a slow paced country person may stop for no reason in front of me or speed down the highway in the wrong lane straight at me! My hands sweat, I try not to blink and I ride in total silence I as peer into the horizon for on coming vehicle barrelingtowardsme and ourinevitablehead on collision. <div>
</div><div>Having gone to Mississippi State, I can honestly say I have traveled this corridor of death known as highway 25roughly257 times. It is safe to say that I have had to avoidcompletelystopped cars on 228 of these trips. It is also safe to say that almost every trip includes abrake-less18 wheelers in the wrong lane barreling at me with a drunk behind the wheel.</div><div>
</div><div>I share you concerns and fears my geriatric friend. Highway 25 is a death trap andGovernorBarbourshould make it 6 lanes to ensure it'ssafety. I also think he should mandate "Wrong Way" signs every 300 feet the entirelengthof the cursedstretchof death.</div>

At last weeks game. State fans were every where because UAB had few tickets sold. I think we give 7,500 for SEC team fans to come to MSU. If they send them back they don't get here till late. Take into account OCT 31, the economy, hotels at the last minute and you got it. Lets just be glad its filling up by game time. And last there is still allot of fans that don't really believe were that good.

One last point Ole Miss playing Auburn. Which game do you want to go to if your not a big fan of either School......

This pisses me off like nothing else. We have enough fans and alums from just the Jackson/Madison area to more than fill up the stadium but they won't get off their collective asses and make the2 hour drive to Starkville. I would fully understand it if Winston Churchill Croom was still our head coach along with Lonnie Tinkle at AD. We had no hope of making a move up in the league with those 2 buffoons running the show.Times have changed and we have leadership in place that is giving usa chance to become a player again in this league. And we arealready bowl-eligible for crying out loud. Quit making excuses and support your damn team (in person) or stop wearing the colors!! I will be making the 5-1/2 hour drive over to the game this weekend from Georgia. I have family and college buddiesliving in the Madison areathat haven't been to a game in 4-5 years now. I don't understand it at all. If I lived closer, I would beheading up there every weekend. I drove to the Georgia game earlier this year, parked on University Drive, and walked across the bridge to the stadium. I stayed until the horn sounded, walked back to the car, and pulled out 10 minutes later. My advice to our alums/supporters in the Jackson/Madisonis to either get your asses to the games or don't complain when we can't keep a good coach.

Scared the #$%! out of me both times.

However, the first time was on Hwy 45 between Starkville and Columbus, and the 2nd time was on Interstate 20 between Vicksburg and Jackson. Both controlled-access roads built to Interstate standards. So to answer your question, I guess about twice a lifetime for me.
