Mullen needs to face reality.

College athletics, especially SEC, is big business. In the business world you either perform or you get replaced. Dan has the misconception that making $2.6 a year gives you the right to be satisfied with status quo. It gives you the right to promote assistants instead putting forth the effort to search for and hire a qualified individual. It gives you the right to assume that the individual who has practiced the most at a position is the best player at that position instead of pouring thru practice and game film to see if there's someone else with more potential. It gives you the right to schedule 4 horrible non conference teams, enjoy Kentucky as your permanent East opponent and hopefully catch a couple of SEC teams having a horrible enough season that you can squeak by them to get you to a bowl game where you get embarrassed by a lesser team. But you can't blame Dan. He's not the first MSU coach to fall into this mindset.
I see some of you defending him because of winning seasons, bowl game "appearances" etc. That is absurd. Going to a bowl means nothing, especially when you get the crap beaten out of you. Last year proved a winning record means nothing. We were one or two plays away from having a losing record when we caught several SEC teams at their all time worst. That will not likely happen again.
Dan has gone from a fired up, energetic (and pretty obnoxious) young coach to another lethargic, unconcerned MSU coach. It must be something in the water. The scary part is we done have Greg Byrne to get us out of this one.
Dan needs to be given an ultimatum. Either right the ship or move on. This is big business and needs to be treated as such.

I think Dan is a reasonably good Xs and O's coach. The problem to me seems to be that he wants everything done his way and hires assistants that tell him just what he wants to hear. He also doesn't seem to adapt well when Plan A isn't working, or when it is working but the other team makes adjustments. There doesn't seem to be a Plan B, much less C, D, etc. Even when he switches QBs, it seeems as if that was the plan all along,, because the play calling remains largely the same.

Through all the coaches (except for JWS for a spell), the only constant in the equation is MSU.

Going to a bowl means nothing? At the very least, it means two very important things: (1) a record of .500 or better and (2) a pay day.

Sometimes I wish college football teams could face relegation. It would teach the fans to understand their place and appreciate what they have. I'm not sure you've really thought this through, but what you are asking for is that MSU perform better against the SEC, which really means perform better against the SEC elite, and that is like West Brom fans getting upset that they didn't make the Champion's League.

The fact he thinks going to a bowl means nothing shows what a great job Dan has done

Thank Jeebus we don't have relegation. We would have been relegated back in the '60s, never to return!

You are correct Philly. It does mean a payday and that is good for the conference and university. But we obviously don't agree on the .500 or better part. I don't, and Dan didn't when he came to MSU, believe that is acceptable. I truly believe that we have the talent on this team to compete with the elite teams in our conference but I don't think our coaching staff does. That's why we play 60 minutes against Troy and Alcorn and only the first half against tougher opponents. Dan has that lost look on his face the whole second half and I'm not sure why. I can only guess that it's due to a lack of preparation. He is paid too much money to show up week after week unprepared. If he can't get it done he needs to hire some coaches under him that can or move on.
Hopefully we can agree to disagree.
