I took the 8 win expectation more as commentary on last season...

Because the fan base was generally disappointed with an 8 win season last year base on how we finished.

Here you go:

How do you combat the perception that Ole Miss is a program on the rise and that yours isn’t?

Dan Mullen: I think the fact that we still played a New Year’s Day, that’s the amazing thing at Mississippi State. We played a New Year’s Day bowl game, we averaging eight wins a year and we still had a better record than they did. And perception really isn’t reality for us. Our program is right where we want it to be in the fact that we are consistently winning football games. What I love is the perception around Mississippi State’s changed and the expectations have changed. Now an eight-win season at Mississippi State, which used to be one of the best you can have, is kind of considered average. That’s really what I like.

The only issue is that the roles were reversed in 2009. We had just dog whipped the bears who that very season went to win a NY day bowl and finished with a better record while DM himself proclaimed us 'a team on the rise'. Can't have it both ways.

Does this discussion have to be so literal? It was a good answer to a terrible finish last season. This year seven would be good bc of the opener with OSU. Last year 8 sucked because of the 7-0 start and what we know now was a fractured locker room coaches included. four patsies and a 4-4 conference record probably is average these days. Opening with OSU and going 8-4 this year is probably above average.

Agreed...A bowl game each year should be the expectation based on our history..

we should be very proud of that. Although as a fan you want to believe your team is capable of winning 8-10 games a year but it's not realistic for us. So, to answer the question, no, 8 wins is not the average for Miss. State. This year will tell me a lot of Mullen, we really need to beat someone in which we are not favored.
