Actually had the same thought myself. We could have nipped a lot of this.

Actually think we tried to do that by releasing the apology letter. Hoped that would be enough but really probably should have known better.

I don't think he should have been suspended at all because I don't think it was intentional. He jumped over the pile and landed on the LSU guy. I doubt whether or not he could see the LSU player on the other side of the pile, especially at the speed of the play.

Is anyone aware as to whether there is any sort of precedent for this? This is the first time that I can recall ever hearing about a player being suspended after the fact for a play that wasn't even flagged.

We can continue to debate all day. I am MSU through and through. He did it on purpose. The biggest problem he has with the first one is the fact that it is a true 'stomp'. he actually tries to inflict more than just a step on the guy. I want my OL to be mean and nasty. But, I also want them to be smart about it. He would have gotten away with the first one all day long. He did it again and that was selfish. It served no purpose and he as put his team in danger because of his act.

He could have come out and huffed "Well he won't play a single down of football this Saturday, I can promise you that!!! THIS PRESS CONFERENCE IS OVER!"
just to see who caught on.

That damn SB nation animated GIF is the problem.

That GIF is the only thing everybody is seeing. It speeds up right at the point his foot is coming down, making it look like an accelerated stomp. The first time I saw it I figured it for an obvious stomp. But when you look at it from the game replay, and from a front view, it looks pretty benign. There's a reason the LSU players and Ref standing right there didn't react. Makes me wonder who made that GIF. GIFGATE!

If that was true, why wasn't a flag dropped on the play?

I have only seen the coaches handle this kind of thing previously. UGA did it with Richt on the Fletcher Cox play but that was 100% UGA's decision. Only one that comes to mind lately.

Again, you will NEVER hear me say that Day DESERVED this or if he played for the big dogs, he would have never gotten this. But, if you are MSU, you must be smarter. I was waiting for the holding penalty all night Saturday that would allow LSU back in the game. When you are playing the SEC big boys, you HAVE to be smarter AND outplay them. You cannot give them anything to latch onto. This was a bad, stupid, selfish move.

I've got to agree..........

The first one looks so bad. I don't think he made a conscious decision to hurt either player. He was in the air and his OL mean streak got the best of him. He stepped down on that first dude and just trotted off. Had he just checked on the guy that might have been enough to avoid all this. Of course, to top everything off he was hit with a late unsportsmanlike penalty.

And now we face the prospect of rolling the dice with Muniz or rearranging the whole line. I say work hard with Muniz.

Seriously? There are tons of penalties handed out 'after the fact'. Just because the referee doesn't call it does not mean you got away with it. This happens in all levels. HS, College and Pro. How many headhunting penalties were handed out last year in the NFL where no penalty was called on the play? Again, I know that it looks worse on video that it did in real life, but that doesn't mean he didn't mean to do what he did. Dan Mullen, I guarantee you, knows what happened and had more than a word with Day about it. There is a reason he hasn't commented.

Pretty sure Trae Elston was not flagged for his hit a couple years ago that got him suspended for the Texas game. Heck, I'm not even sure there was anything wrong with his hit, other than it really shook up the UTEP player.

OK, guess we have to learn not to play so rough. We need to be patsies and take it like we have for years. We are so sorry, Commissioner Slive.

playing SMART. That is the difference, buddy. This was the exact OPPOSITE of smart. Go ahead and tell me exactly how many times you have EVER noticed a player in a game step on the opponent's mid section twice in the same game? I do not think ESPN had a bias to get us or Dillon Day in trouble. They caught very obvious video and ran with it. WE GAVE THEM THIS OPPORTUNITY BY NOT BEING SMART!!! Now is the time for us to get our heads out of our asses though and play with a chip on our shoulder. Again, we need to play SMART with a chip on our shoulder.

What Day has done is shed a very bright light on our program. Now, if there is EVER a doubt on a player of ours being 'dirty', you can bet the flag will be dropped.

Definitely the route I would take. More, us against the world.

With ready made evidence to prove it. "You gotta beat them all and make them like it"

I still haven't noticed it, particularly since Day didn't get Tiger #2 in the mid-section.
Heck, watching it, IF he does have Matrix stomping skills and did do that one intentionally, he should sit some for stupidity. He risked his own ankles and knees by landing on flesh instead of terra firma, and went down for his trouble.

Timing totally off for half game suspensions in light of the Jameis Winston fiasco

All things considered, I'm not sure the penality is quite enough

Since he got lit up for one game, why not add say an hour of community service, and

require him to join #*****.stompers.anonymous.

I hear they have a 12 step program.
