Mullen

From a finebaum called. Caller said Mullen tried like hell to get out last year but couldn't

Laughable

Mullen should come out and say right now that he is not interested and will not take the Arkansas job. What is his buyout anyway? Will the NCAA crap hurt his chances to get the Arkansas job? If the Waltons want to, Arkansas can pay top dollar.

This could kill recruiting. I would hate to have a situation like TSUN was in with Tuberville and Auburn. NIP IT IN THE BUD!!!!!!!!!!

So UPig wants to hire the coach that has never beat them...

...I know if I were shopping around for a coach, the first guy I would look at is the one that could never beat me. If that's not a major selling point, I don't know what is.

Of course there is a rumor he is going to Arkansas- and UM will go to a BCS bowl game this year, too.

This is ********. For one, Slive would most likely step in. Remember, he said he didn't like SEC schools stealing each other's HEAD coaches. Also, Mullen has too much of a good thing going here- Success, talent, solid recruits coming in, a new practice facility, new office, his in-laws just moved to Starkville, etc. I only see him leaving for a major program.

It's amazing how scared other schools fans are of the potential of Mullen+State. You do realize that these rumors are almost ALWAYS propogated by SEC fans from other schools. Why do you think that is.

Here are a couple of truths:

1) Mullen and this Athletic Department have a great relationship
2) Mama Mullen likes it here...a lot
3) Coach Mullen likes it here...a lot
4) The athletic department has not just invested in Mullen, they have invested in his plan and his philosophy...and any coach appreciates that

and here is the most important:

5) Mullen gives relentless effort. He does not quit. He lives what he "preaches" (pun intended)

After writing this i realize now that I may have a slight mancrush on Mullen...no homo though.

Link to last popular SEC head football coach that left for another job within the conference under Mike Slive? I'll be waiting...

Just so no one's head explodes trying, it has never happened. The last to leave in such a manner period was Tuberville in 1998 under Kramer.

I've been on their board plenty this last week for this sole purpose. Dan Mullen hasn't been mentioned by one poster. Charlie Strong, Malzahn, Garrick McGee, Hudspeth, the Stanford coach, the Baylor coach and then dream hire is John Gruden. These are the names flying around most often and Charlie Strong looks to be the early leader. Not to bring race into it but I think the hire will be an African-American coach. There's still 10 SEC schools that have never hired a black coach. That's not a trend schools want to continue.

I don't what's dumber to me, that Jon Gruden is everyone's dream hire when he has had nothing whatsoever to do with the college game in over 20 years, or that people expect someone who could get an NFL job anytime he wanted it would pass that over for a college job.

(I realize you're just repeating what others have said, so this isn't directed at you.)

He's already been successful at the pro level; it's also obvious (at least to me) that he's interested in the development of players early in their career; he's brilliant on his HBO show pre-draft every year.

One thing's for sure, I don't see him wanting to try and rebuild a program or even go somewhere that hasn't won a conference title in 20 years (Arkansas). He'll go somewhere that it's easy to recruit to.

So I disagree with you here; I think he has some interest in the college game.

Isn't it nice to have a coach that is good enough to warrant rumors of other schools hiring him away from us, as opposed to having an awful coach that other coaches are trying to convince us to keep?

I think Arkansas would be a lateral move in the present day. Yes they have a bigger athletic budget and a slightly larger stadium..after our expansion is completed. But they have not recruited any better over the last several years and have been very very lucky to enjoy the level of success they've had recently. It's going to be much more difficult to get to that point again, if possible. Arkansas's location hurts it tremendously in the recruiting game. That's something that will never change.

Didn't Slive say he didn't want the SEC cannibalizing its head coaches? I believe it was during one of Tennessee's searches. Can't remember which, there were so many.

It's amazing how one redneck arky fan with seven teeth can call in with a Mullen comment and we bite. I'll give that mouthbreather props for making half our fan base do mental push-ups
