Mullen was not a bad choice when we hired him

Anytime you hire an assistant there is the possibility he won`t work out and you can`t take that risk out of the equation. I was happy when we hired him but Mullen just turned out to be another classic M-State train wreck. Exactly what else is there to say ?

At the time he was highly thought of in college football. However, the 2010 season created a big deception about his coaching ability. To his defense, somewhat, Mullen's style of offense is now outdated and simply doesn't work anymore, unless you're Bama or maybe LSU. But the truth is, we now know that Mullen is a horrible game day coach. I don't care how much preparation you put in, that will get you beat and will continue to cost us games.

I knew he was a bad game day coach during his first season BUT thought that was just from inexperience and that he would learn on the job. Didn`t happen. The fact is he just doesn`t have "it" and never will. When you couple this with his (and again we had no way to know) recruiting short comings he`s just another flop we made into a millionaire. We are M State !

His problem is recruiting and surrounding himself with coaches who either think like him, or keep their mouths shut if they don't. That's why HUD left. He IS a good coach, though. Vegas is a tough palace to recruit. We may not go bowling this year, but if we fire a coach who took us to 4 straight bowls-- and is our last coach to have an overall winning record here since the guy that Texas named its stadium after-- no coach worth a damn will come here. Why would they?

Again hiring assistant coaches is feast or famine. Unfortunately at MSU (IMO) it`s the way we`ll realistically have to go. The fact is we`re either the worst or next to worst team in the SEC in his 5th year and unquestionably headed in the wrong direction. We have two helpings of crow to digest 1) Mullen was a bad hire 2) Croom was a much better recruiter than we and the recruiting services gave him credit.

And damn if I didn`t just flat miss one of those "4 straight bowls".

I think getting completely passed over for the Florida job after 2010 took the fire out of Mullen much like getting passed over for the Alabama job after 2000 took the fire out of the Kang. He saw his top assistants leaving for bigger things: Manny making the type of jump Dan was hoping to make albeit at the coordinator level and Hud getting his first HC gig. Dan was left behind and after a pathetic start to the SEC slate in 2011, gave up. He figures he can hold onto a comfortable 2.5MM a year job by making a bowl every 2 of 3 years and when other teams are down he has a good chance of getting to 8+ wins and having us love him.

We can get one, we just have to pony up. Need a guy that runs a style of offense that's been proven to work at NON- powerhouse programs.

Concerning Mullen's recruiting, the biggest problem has been the inability to land playmakers on offense. Especially athletes...receivers and half-backs that can scoot. Holloway is an example, but we need about 4 of those guys. Why Mullen didn't make recruiting receivers a priority in 2011/2012 is a real head scratcher, since we had 4 starters vacating the roster last season. I lost faith in Mullen prior to last season.
