Ok, I just watched Mullen address the team before kickoff on my DVR. I like what the guy is doing on the field, but that speech was pretty bad. Hate to say it, but that's one thing Sly Croom was decent at. Mullen sounded like he was trying to score an 8-ball. It was four sentences repeated into about twelve. Maybe he was just nervous since the cameras were in there and it was his first speech and all. Granted, it's not a major concern of any kind, but I found myself laughing at that ****. Let's hope he improves.

Anyone else cringe while listening to him?

You do not want to give your best fired up pep talk before a game that you know that you are going to win. It may not sound right but you can only get these guys really fired up for a few games a year. For the first game they were fired up on their on. I remember when I played in high school. Before our biggest game of each season while we were waiting in the locker room to go out our head coach would come in banging on the metal door before he opened the door. He would have blood running down from his eyebrough. There was nothing like it, but to be honest that only last for for a few series. Later I learned that he would cut his eyebrough with a razor blade and hit the door with his hands. I would not worry much about what we saw especially since it was shown on ESPNU. From the looks of Mullen, I think that he can light the spark in their *** when the time is right.

that you think a good pre-game speech is basically talking about Bear Bryant and character before kickoff?

Look I'm just as glad as anyone on here that Croom is not coaching our team. That wasn't what I was getting at. Perhaps it was a mistake putting his name in there. I was just surprised at how bad Mullen's speech was, given his usual knack for handling speaking situations well. That's all. It's not a big deal. It was funny.

Crooms was full of **** and a ******** artist, hence his ability to TALK and not coach. He was full of hot air and a bullshitter.

If you need a speech 5 min before the game to fire you up you're !$%*%! anyway.

It really does not take much other than seeing a full stadium to get you ready. This is not something that most of our players are used to. I never thought that we would see this kind of crowd especially with the rain. Second, after watching Scooba's video I can tell you that I got goosebumbs again even though you could not hear anything but cowbells.

when Dan Mullen farts. I've heard enough head coaches talk to know what is and isn't motivating. Doesn't mean Mullen won't have 'em ready to "knock down a damn door" this weekend on the plains. I just found what he said repeatedly amusing.

In response to the other comments, this has nothing to do with how well our team is prepared for the game. It has nothing to do with how bad of a coach Sly Croom was. I'm just talking about sixty seconds of what I saw on ESPNU. Anything suggested beyond that is taking what I said out of context. Lighten up, folks. You act as if the Walrus lost to Ole Miss by forty points or something.

Were about as ashamed and embarrassed as one could be during the famous "Winston Churchill pep-rally speech" ....that's about as bad a motivational speech or public speaking appearance that you could have

it was speaking to a public audience. He made a mistake and we make fun of it but after listening to him speak, you really believed what he was saying. I thought he was outstanding.

I neither was ashamed or embarrassed after that speech. You act like he showed his pecker on national TV.

The man can preach. He missed his calling. I guess he's a decent assistant in the league, but the man had no business pretending to be a college head coach. None. He was the very embodiment of the Peter Principle.

in an administrative role at State. Make him a fundraiser. He just sucked horribly as a college football coach.

He needs to sell his house and never set foot in Starkville again. What has he ever done to make you think he could be a fundraiser?

He was a mumbler of epic proportions. Unless you are inspired by incoherent mumbling and nonsensical explanations then I do not see how you can say Crooms was a great speaker. He uhmed and ered and mumbled through every live interview I ever saw. And the post game show was a farce. You could taste the disdain in Kristil's voice when Croom was on the air mumbling his way through another post game show. I was maddened by the epic mumbling. You could tell Kristil was disgusted with it. I loved seeing how HAPPY Kristil was when interviewing Mullen for the Dan Mullen show. Oh how happy and young he looked as he actually conversed with a coach who was coherent and made sense. Oh the joy the joy. Croom needs a speaking coach or something if he ever plans on speaking for a living. He better pre-record his speeches and lip sync them after editing out the googolplex of uhms, ers, uhs and grammatical and verbal mistakes. The guy made Porky Pig sound like JFK.

he is a good guy and an outstanding speaker. I highly doubt he would do it with Byrne there.

I mean, if you look at your tennis record, you should never set foot on Parham Bridges again.

one at Warren County Alumni Event and another time in Jackson. Both times, I came out believing what he said. As I said before, I thought he was outstanding.

But he's never raised funds in his life or really done anything but coach football. There's a lot more than goes into effective fundraising than that and he has no background in it.

As for tennis, I did manage to go 4-0 at the men's league state tournament and 2-1 at the mixed doubles state tournament last year. As I've said before, you beat me once in singles but your day is coming.

Because after watching him, I would listen to Coach O talk about Shayfuh, depth charts in sand, recruiting rankings, and how not to cover a kickoff.

From a PR standpoint, Croom was everything you wanted for a hire at MSU. He was black, decent resume, christian, and a great father figure for athletes in MS.

People forget that after the 2007 season and headed into the 2008 season, Croom was getting commits from top athletes in the state, and looking at a season where 8 wins was more than attainable.

I agree with DS he was a solid public speaker and a great ambassador for MSU, just not a good football coach.

I watched the speech Mullen gave, and it is all about perspective, if you love Mullen it was the Kurt Russell from Miracle, Al Pacino in Any Given Sunday, with a mix of the speech from Patton. If someone just typed down what Mullen said, it would not read well at all, but that isn't the point.

and saying "relentless effort". He could say "Lick my balls" as long as he wins.
