Mullen feels like he can take a kid, give him two or three years, and then turn him into a servicable SEC football player. We'll see if it works or not over the next two years. We have done well identifying some off the radar guys: Slay, Banks, Malcolmn Johnson, McKinney (looks very promising), Preston Smith, Perkins, etc.

It won't take long to figure out where we stand in 2013. We play OSU and @ Auburn early. Those will be good measuring sticks, IMO.

Banks won the Thorpe. The rest wouldn't make Bamas roster. McKinney had a lot of tackles but they were downfield. Stop celebrating mediocrity.

I have to mostly agree with you, whoever you are. You can rationalize the recruiting process anyway you want but there are few MSU fans that wouldn't reluctantly admit they'd rather have a dozen 4* "commits" now --even though it's only June. Every SEC team that beat us last year- and every loss was ugly-- had a 10 ten recruiting class in 2013, and all have a great class "on paper" for 2014. If you subtract Cord from our 2013 haul, we underachieved by SEC standards. I think Mullen would admit it's hard to recruit to MSU, but some of his ideas give me the impression he thinks we will never get good classes due to some inherent deficiency with our school/campus. Why else would he say something as irrational as there needs to be an early signing day, before the senior year of HS and that recruits can't take an OV to the school they committed to until after they sign. http://www.ajc.com/weblogs/college-recruiting/2013/feb/27/sec-coach-supports-new-recruiting-rules/ That not a visit--that's called moving in. Wjat's he afraid they'll see?

I think Renfroe would have been a lot better off if his family had moved just a little north into the Terry district. It's pretty obvious watching and hearing Hershiser's comments about him that he almost had to start from scratch in learning the game when he got to MSU. Or if moving wasn't an option, I'm sure he could have gotten some financial help to play at Hillcrest. They're nothing like what they used to be but still a lot better than Copiah Academy.

He was cut by Shane Kelly at HC as an 8th grader. Common knowledge around here. This is the underlying story behind his "year off" that's been mentioned in several articles. This happened 2-3 years after Coach Wy left for Murray St...

^^^^^^^^ if you actually believe this you should jump off a cliff.

Slay was incredible for us. M. Johnson (when healthy) is the best receiving TE in the SEC. McKinney is going to be a 1st-3rd round pick. He was an absolute monster this year. Ask an Alabama fan who actually knows what they're talking about and they would steal McKinney in a heartbeat if they could. Perkins has had All-SEC honors every year........ he was an injury away from going to Auburn and starting there.

No **** they wouldn't make Bama's team, but that's not how you judge successful recruiting at MSU. They would make it on OM, Vandy, Auburn, Arkansas' team though. That's who I want us to beat on and off the field.

If you're looking for Mullen to out recruit Saban, you're a fool. I want Mullen to beat the teams I mentioned earlier, or at least develope comparable players. This year will tell us a great deal about rather we're on that path or not. I expect us as a program to be able to win a couple of the following games: @ Auburn, @ Arkansas, Ok State, OM, LSU. If we don't get that done, people can be dissatisfied with Mullen, but it won't be because we're behind fvcking Kentucky in June.

I'm going to tackle several things. First KY is having a ton of success in OH selling the SEC thing and they have some coaches with ties there that's really helping. The Big (whatever # they are) and Big East implosion are helping them and they are taking advantage. Heck, i wish we were that smart but KY is pretty close to home for most of the OH boys

Second, most of our best players were 2-3 star recruits and msot of those guys could get into most lineups not named LSU or Bama. So I don't base it just on stars.

Everyone will agree we royally screwed up QB recruiting last year and we lost a lot of late battles for some high profile guys. The truth is Mullen is never going to be a great recruiter b/c honestly he's pretty terrible at it. He doesn't have the personality for it - this is pretty common knowledge. Most of the assistants would happier if Mullen stayed away from the in-homes and such but that' not really an option. Plus every time he gets an assistant that's pretty good at it (ie brewster) some big money program comes and hauls him away.

Add that S'ville is probably at or near the bottom of attractive towns for most athletes and it's an uphill battle.

I gotta give it to u on Slay. Hate Mullen wasted his first year. I forgot abt him. He's a baller. Instead of throwing him out on the field we continue to play Broomfield who is a great kid but terrible football player. As for Perk he's OVERRATED.

I'm pretty big on recruiting too, but it's only June man.

Everyone's given you the MSU perspective, so I'll offer a different one. This time last year, Laquon Treadwell was about to commit to Michigan, Robert Nkemdiche was committed to Clemson, Laremy Tunsil was either UGA or Bama bound, and Austin Golson and Christian Morgan were committed to FSU. Half of Ole Miss' commits at the time ended up signing elsewhere (if you recall Goat's daily "Ole Miss' class is falling apart" topics.)

tl;dr Take your ******' xanax.

And NONE of them would have signed if your team hadn't done a 180, and turned the season around. Those recruits committed after RN decommitted from Clemson and everyone thought he'd end up at the U of OM. That 2013 recruiting class figured with the depleted number of scholarship athletes due to flunk-outs, and the talent level still there, they'd all have a realistic chance of playing together and a(n) (un)realistic chance of "playing for a national championship." and they've said as much. We have a very different situation.

I've discussed it a lot on here but the Robert Nkemdiche impact is vastly overrated by your fanbase. The only commit we ever had that mentioned him was Elijah Daniel who ended up signing with Auburn. Laquon Treadwell and Ryan Buchanan had a bigger impact than Robert.

ETA: Especially Treadwell. I've never seen a recruit actively put on their recruiting hat 4 months before they even commit to the school.

That and we paid them, of course.**

The only ones that get it are the all 24/7 team members. They have seen the light. All the rest over there are sunshine pumpers. Don't pee in my face and tell me it's sweet milk.

You're obviously here to stay, so I just have one request.....

Stop using the "pee / sweet milk" line. That's at least twice in a week. It's not clever.

Right.

Maybe we should forfeit that game since fans think like this. Smh

Yep. Everyone else is being unreasonable.
We're not the ones that want OUR HEAD COACH FIRED because he's not living up to expectations for recruiting two years away.

You are so stoked full of bearsh*t, my brother from another mother's species. I googled "Nkemdiche Effect" in quotes so it's an exact match and got over 9000 hits. Your board is lit up with it. You've probably posted about it and are being a contrarian bear now. The Clarion Ledger says it's still happening. The Oxford Eagle named the "Nkemdiche Effect" as "Rebel Player of the Year"--not the man, the effect. http://oxfordeagle.com/2013/06/mill...-are-top-moments-of-ole-miss-sports-calendar/ You think those 4* and 5* recruits just decided The Groovy is the place to be? Players like that don't commit to a school they don't think has a chance to win it all. If Denzel was a Georgia, your team wouldn't have broken the top 20 in recruiting. You must be loaded up on Xanax if you believe what you are saying. You would have still gotten those players without RN. Right...

Miss. State will never be a consistent top tier team. We haven't been a consistent .500 team over the last 50 years....Your goal as a MSU football fan should be .500 or above and a bowl game each year. The truth hurts young man but when you accept reality, you will have a lot less stress concerning MSU football.

That's pathetic, if these are our true realistic aspirations then I don't why we are concerned with selling out the stadium and putting 100 million into facility upgrades. Heck, we can get to .500 just by scheduling 4 very winnable OOC games and finding a couple of SEC games we can pull out. There is definitely middle ground between expecting to have Saban@Bama type success and being happy with just making a bottom of the barrel bowl game every year. And while WSS is maybe going a little overboard about the recruiting situation it IS a concern and we should be seeing more highly rated players being attracted to our program at this point under Mullen than we are. Mullen and staff have a LOT to offer a kid in recruiting that we did NOT have to offer 5 years ago so if the job is not getting done its more a problem with Mullen and his staff than it is with disadvantages at MSU. Its been fairly evident from the start that recruiting is not Mullen's strong suit but he HAS to be good enough at it to attract the level of talent required to compete in this league. Can't win much in this league as strictly a development program of diamonds in the rough. 2 and 3 star guys usually can only be developed so much.

That doesn't help us either. We don't quite have that one down as well as some of the rest of our brethren do.

I think Dan should invite the other SEC coaches over, get them drunk as hell, then ask them how to do that **** proper and all.

Guess its not just your fanbase then. I didn't say he didn't have an impact. But I think it's overrated and really undersells the jobs that Treadwell, Freeze, Kiffin, and McGriff did.

So what're they paying you?

They're paying Rebel trolls to just show up on our message boards now, right? So what's the rate? Whatever they're paying you, you're not earning it. This is horrible - though you did get some comments.

Is the strategy to move us away from baseball and onto football recruiting? Something Olemiss can "win" at?

You guys are funny. I love that we're so awesome that they've started to pay little 17ers like you to come over to our board and start stuff. I'm not sure anybody bought your entrance in the first place ("hey guys...it's Why So Serious from some other board...just here to hang...keep Hailing State or whatever").

Go back home to your rebel boards....send the smarter ones over here for us to toy with.
