A lot of younger MSU fans will never truly understand. Most of us on this board grew up in the era when MSU sports were lucky if you saw them on TV once per year. The rest of the time you 'watched' them on the radio thanks to the mythical voice of a man named Jack Cristil. He didn't just report what he saw, he gave the listener on the radio the 'story' of what was going on.

One of my favorites was the "going from right to left on your radio dial". Now, that means almost nothing but it was a piece of what he interwove into each broadcast. He was amazing.

I wish my younger children would have had a chance to get to hear him call a game. Something truly magical listening to him describe a game. I could see exactly what was happening through his descriptions. Never will be a better Bulldog!

I'm truly saddened. A part of our University is gone and it cannot be replaced. God bless you Jack and thank you for all the wonderful memories.

I heard that broadcast and yes, he hated UK basketball with a passion. His broadcast of the 90-91 win over UK was great. That call of when Todd Merritt hit the 3 for the win was one of the greats.

As I posted on Nafoom, they don't make them like Jack, Larry Munson, John Ward, etc. anymore.

And the listening audience isn't as big a part of the game anymore either. Those voices are iconic. I'm sure he'll be honored in some way by your university, as he should.

I always enjoyed listening to him and did a good bit as a kid. Back in the days before satellite TV and XM radio, the only access you had to any other games going on that day was radio access, and if you were in Oxford, the only games you could get within radio reach were the MSU games and maybe the UT game out of a Memphis area station, so I heard a good bit of Jack while tailgating growing up. He was a great one.

I really hate to hear about Mr. Cristil. It seems like an understatement to say that Mr. Cristil was great guy, a true professional in every sense of the word, and an iconic member of the MSU family. I honestly can't think of a way to describe him that does him justice. I'm genuinely sorry for your loss.

Why isn't there a pic of Jack at the top?

I can remember, as a teenager, listening to Jack while Dad and I were out Dove hunting (back in the 1970's, you couldn't hunt dove until noon). We'd be sitting on a portable seat, drinking Mt. Dew, looking up at the sky for dove, and listening to Jack on the radio.

It really does feel like that.

I wonder how many times I sat in the house or rode in a car with my parents while listening to his voice. No doubt, hundreds.

Im just incredibly sad right now.

Just thinking back at how many times I listened to Jack with my Dad and Grandad and brothers, I can't help but get teary. He was such a huge fixture in our home and our cars come fall time. It's good to have the nice memories but you also can't help but wonder where that time went. A much simpler time. This may sound odd, but Jack had a very soothing quality when you listened to him (to me anyway). It was like when you were listening to Jack, no matter if we were doing good or bad, everything was ok. Part of that is probably because I was always with my dad or grandad listening to him. But that's just it. He connected us all. We longed to hear him say "wrap it in maroon and white" but even if the Dogs lost that day, it was still a good day when you got to hear Jack.
