This is ummm.....interesting to say the least about what their AD thinks about their program. I will say this. NCST did recruit like **** even by our standards by the rankings knowing that Mullen out performs the rankings, but if he recruited like this we'd probably be where Kentucky is, but also remember NCST is in the ACC where Kentucky could probably be mediocre...maybe.

I'll give some credit to the NCST AD. They are recruiting a lot better, but they stunk it up this year on the field in a major way going 0-8 in the ACC. O'Brien certainly would have done better than that.

Disclaimer: I live in NC, but hate all the Carolina schools. I'll pull for Wake a little bit.

Yeah -- I thought Doeren was a total grand slam hire when they made it -- but I'm a little less sure now. Was expecting much better immediate results. We'll see once he gets some of his players in place, but he better improve bigtime next year if he wants to stick around to find out. NC State has made it abundantly clear at this point that they want to become the Virginia Tech of North Carolina.

Running off Russell Wilson didn't help, either.

I seem to remember there was a lot of grumbling when O'brien gave the ultimatum to Wilson of no more minor league baseball. Mike Glennen was no slouch, but as we can watch now on Sundays and his success at Wisconsin, Wilson is a special talent.

I'm really referring to the part of the article where Yow said she wants the NCST coach to recruit to the level Alabama does. THAT AIN'T HAPPENING!

0-8 in the ACC is atrocious. Kentucky might be on the upper end of that conference. About all they have is FSU, Duke this year, and sometimes VaTech.

Upper end? I doubt it. Remember that Miami beat UF before the Gators were decimated by injuries. Also Clemson beat UGA while they were still at full strength. Boston College is no slouch either. I would see UK losing to all of them: FSU, Duke, Va Tech, Miami, Clemson, and BC.

Northern Illinois is looking like the Boise State of the 2010s. People forget that before Petersen Boise had a coach who built that program, ended up getting hired by Colorado, and did jack but run them further into the ground. If Doeren does nothing at NC State and Carey continues the success at Northern Illinois, it's the same old story.

So no body thinks that their AD thinking they can bring in "Alabama type talent" is ridiculous and kind of sounds like our neighbors up north? They fire coaches for being mediocre and then having a year or two of over achieving. I would think NCST would be in the same boat. They aren't known for football. Everyone up here cares way more about basketball than football. No body is talking about Duke and I mean no one.

I agree 100%...

Difference being Jerry Kill built Northern Illinois and also recruited Jordan Lynch and Chandler Harnish, who have carried them to the heights they are currently seeing. The coaches that came after him and got those players in that league fell into a total gold mine... and may/may not be excellent coaches in their own right, time will tell. Kill has proven to be pretty tremendous thusfar though in getting Minnesota up and kicking...

They just see an opening and are wanting to carve out their own niche in NC. Think it's a smart move on their part overall -- whether misguided in "goals" or not. If you could become a single, dominant football program and keep NC talent in state, I'd think you can build a real powerhouse up there. At least on the Va Tech level...

It looks, at the moment, like NC State hired the wrong person. Doeren just inherited the talent at NIU. This Kill guy looks like he's the winner of the group. See here.

You're right about the talent pool. It's been here for a while, especially those teams in Charlotte. My HS lost to Butler (Matthews, NC) last Friday in the 3rd round and they have 8 D1 prospects on their roster from Sophomores to Seniors. Their QB is Ratliff who has a Mississippi State offer. He's a stud. Only a JR. My old HS has a stud at QB/ATH who's only a soph and he's got a cannon. Also, our DE has offers from everywhere.

There is a lot of talent in this state, but it gets robbed every year. The only program committed up here is ECU actually. It seems NCST is going to try to commit. The guy now is recruiting better, but still not as good as us. He didn't look like he could coach this year tho. Maybe it can be an Ed Orgeron thing, and he can recruit for a few years, then a "players coach" can go in there and pile up some wins.

There's a **** ton of talent up here though.

I cheer for mediocrity in the whole state. It's surprisingly easy to do, but I won't be satisfied til gardner webb is recognized as the top of the state -- as God intends.

I think an AD has to be very careful making decisions based upon recruiting and not get caught up in the mythical recruiting championship. You have to look at the talent on the field and how it performs, which is inextricably tied to how the team performs. Note that this AD has made seven coaching changes in three years throughout the athletic department.
