alright boys and girls. The football season is almost upon us and I would be lying if I said I knew the first thing of what to expect this upcoming season. I’ve tried to gather some information but there’s not much out there. Most seem to believe Ashe will be the favorite. They lost a lot but seem to be competitive every year. Starmount is one year removed from a Western Final appearance but people seem to think the bracket was weak. Elkin has been talked about a lot worth their young guys. Can they put it together this year? What do you guys think?

Ashe in 5th? I don’t see that. I see Ashe winning the conference again personally. After that it’s a crap shoot. Central in 3rd? They struggled last year. Pretty sure they lost their QB last year who was very underrated.
I think Starmount and Elkin return more than most of the conference. I think the Rams will put up a lot of points on MVAC teams this year. I could see Ashe finishing ahead of the Wilkes teams, but I also see them winning the conference as more of an anomaly than something I would predict.
This is very true. But I’ve had the same observation. Wilkes Cent. has good coaches and always has big guys up front with their skill talent. They always puzzle me.

Are there cycles where WC is the most talented team? Yes. They have several hundred more students than most of the conference. COMBINED is laughable.

Combined might be an overstatement. But if I’m looking for pure athleticism, the first place I’m looking is Wilkes Cent. Then Elkin and East Wilkes. Like the guy said above, that’s not the whole story. It takes a lot more than athletes to win football games. Starmount made the Western Final last season and they are not the most athletic football team from my observations. They are fundamental and physical. That goes a long ways.
Of course I would start looking at the school with 900 kids. Pure math would tell you that. Then you name a school with 350 kids that usually struggles to get to .500 and a school with like 10 winning seasons in school history?!? They are where talent is located?

They have had 3-4 bad seasons sprinkled here or there over the last 40 years, but let’s be serious. Starmount IS the MVAC.

A cursory look at some recent Starmount team photos suggests the demographics have changed from what they were in the 90's and early 00's.
Solid points. They haven’t been able to beat Wilkes Cent. with speed. Because Central can match them in that department but all other teams I most certainly agree.
I think Starmount used to be the MVAC. I haven’t been here forever but that’s not the case anymore. Times change. In this moment and generation, the MVAC is a weak but competitive conference. Starmount has become a physical, fundamental team. Everyone I’ve talked to admits that openly, including Starmount fans.
A couple down years can change some perceptions, but when teams look at the schedule, only one MVAC team gets looked at twice or circled. The rest have to be googled.
Okay man let’s not get carried away. Not sure why you’re being so sensitive about this. It’s objectively true Starmount isn’t what they once were. Nobody is scared to play Starmount anymore. Can they get back to that? Absolutely, but currently that’s just not true. And you’re in denial if you think what you just typed is the current state of affairs in this conference.

As great a man and as much respect as I have for the last coach, the team did seem to get progressively softer since the last title game appearance. What was that 2015? Y’all act like it was 1982. But anyway, I don’t know that you can put all that on the previous coach. The new coach seems to have things going in the right direction and I think they win the conference this year.

I think it upsets you that other people don’t hold Starmount in the same regard as you do. And rightfully so. I try to be unbiased as possible as I have no dog in this fight. It’s just opinion. I’m sticking with Ashe, then a crap shoot for 2-8.

Says the guys thats been boasting over East Surry. Last I checked there were only 2 football programs in that conference.
Best Team in MVAC finishes 3rd to 5th in the second weakest conference in the state the Northwest 1A.
That’s not true for every year at all. East Surry has generational talent right now that they won’t collectively have again. It still wasn’t enough to beat Tarboro. And won’t be again this season, even though I’ll be pulling for them.
Last years Ashe team probably beats MA. East Surry just lost the best player in school history because he moved to VA.
After those two teams there is absolutely nothing in the NW1A.
