In a game with soooo many fouls, it definitely favors the team with more size and depth. I think in a free-flowing game that Gonzaga could have won by 5-6.

Gonzaga could have won last night if they made free throws and some shots. The refs weren't really a huge hindrance.

It works out to a foul being called on average every 54 seconds, that's absurd. Folks everywhere have complained about how crappy and boring the game was, but is it any wonder when the stripes essentially kept the game from developing any type of flow whatsoever???

I'm all for trying to play Mr. Square and not mention the refs, but yea, the refs did play a part. Some of those calls were beyond ********. 3 different guys completely out of bounds on one play with a ref standing RIGHT THERE and he says 'oh yea , good save, play on. The Meeks jump ball situation, him with possession of the ball and his hand a foot and a half out of bounds on the floor. With the ref almost standing on his frigging hand? The 3 big Zag runs, all thwarted by an absolute BS bump in the lane here and there? Sure , the zags needed to hit some shots at the end, however, hard to contemplate them HAVING to make a couple shots at the end had they been up by 9 or 10 points.

But it went both ways. Zags inbounded the ball with a foot on the line. Theo didn't touch that 3-pt ball. It was a dreadful game for the refs and it impacted both teams. No one get a better or worse whistle.

All it takes is one bad call for either team to make the statement "but it went both ways." Yes, it did go both ways on bad calls, but there was definitely a discrepancy that favored UNC.

Yea, I'd be at the Duke board arguing calls today if i were a unc fan today, for sure.
tell me to go away and I will.

I got away from homeboard posting for a couple of reasons, but I always enjoyed the back and forth here. I'm not trying to rub anything. be well

Time for me to move on to the next play. Time to start dreaming of things like Trevon Duval, Knox, Darius Garland, Tre Jones, Reddish and getting stoked for the likes of Wendell Carter Jr, Gary Trent Jr, Frank Jackson, Grayson Allen, Marques Bolden and the like.

The call of the game was the 4th on Collins. Being a UK fan, I literally called it spot on that he was going to get a cheap call because Zags were gaining momentum with him on the floor

Reminded me a lot of the UK game in the first half when it seemed like every chance for momentum was negated by a cheap foul to send the best player to the bench

Yeah he didn't touch the ball but he did hit the arm.

Zach Collins is a phenomenal rim protector. He really helped neutralize UNC's size in the 1st half. It's such a shame that he only played 14 minutes. Gonzaga could have won if any of the three things happened 1. Karnowski makes just half of the layups that he botched 2. Collins plays without foul trouble and is able to play 30 minutes 3. If Williams-Goss could have made his floaters - he must have missed 5 or 6 of them. He's been making them all tournament long. On the flip side, how many threes did Justin Jackson miss? Pretty shoddy shooting from both sides.

Gonzaga stunk it up in the 2nd half - fouls certainly played a factor, but their offense couldn't find a rhythm. From an entertainment perspective, this was right up there with the Butler-UConn title game.

a foot on the line inbound just didn't seem as implicating as 3 runs smashed by really silly fouls to me. Or an absolute game changer under a minute.

This is done numerous times by every team in every game (including Duke). It's so common that at one point I thought the rule was just one foot behind the line.

In the basketball world, it's the equivalent of going 66 mph in a 65 mph zone. Technically a violation, but very unlikely you get a ticket for it.

The officiating was terrible on both sides and it was bad against the Zags at points in the game that were more crucial, but, that being said, the Zags could have won the game if they hit their FTs, had better shot selection, and Karnowski doesn't have his worst game of the tournament. It is what it is. I would say Gonzaga lost the game is a better description than UNC won the game.

I don't see Berry nor Bradley leaving and can't say I would be shocked if Jackson returns.

I agree. I think the heels are going to have a really good team next year. If jackson does stay he could really up his stock. OFC

I agree the officials didn't cost the Zags the game, but it didn't help when Collins fouled out. I thought he got the short end of the stick on some calls. Kid is very good and former HS teammate of Stephan Zimmerman and Chase Jeter.

Gonzaga didn't make a FG for nearly 8 minutes in the 2nd half, but scored 9 points on 13 FT attempts in that span. They also turned the ball over 10 times more than the Heels and made less than 10 FGs total in the 2nd half, but yet 1 or 2 calls cost them the game?

I hope not, I hate that guy haha, but only because he shoots so well, he's actually not a bad person. The one player I legit don't like is Meeks. The way he openly bullies people and then nearly cries his eyes out over a blatant foul call. Or when he gets his first foul of the game with a couple of minutes left in the first half and yells out the f word. I'm sitting there like for real? Is this guy serious?

Although to be brutally honest, I have a chip on my shoulder about all these guys. They all knew about the scandal and came to UNC anyway. I think the idea of going to a school that is as under the gun in terms of an investigation as UNC is just absurd. It's borderline stupid in my opinion. Then again, top recruits have stayed away year after year because of it (but then you have UNC winning the whole thing without them lol).

But he has so much above the rim play though

No they didn't. What they DID do , like in the Arkansas game , was take away the opportunity for the Zags to win.

Well said....Zags would have had to score, but down 1 strategy is a lot different than down 3 strategy in final minute...

Well said.....Down 1 strategy has better options than down 3 strategy in final minute.I am not going to say a lot about the officials, but two refs from one of the participant's conference? Doesnt seem right.

Up his stock? He is a projected lottery pick. And as far as Jackson goes, let me be totally juvenile. Remember when Hole fans were cheesy enough to talk about how UGLY guys like Kyle "Learch". As they called him, Singler and Nolan Smith were? Well Justin Jackson is about the ugliest head I have ever seen in college bball. Bet he didn't even dress up for Halloween as a kid. OK, I'm done with that now.

Jackson is, FINALLY, a lottery pick. No way he comes back. Roy, that great developer of talent, turned that 1, 2 year kid at most, into a three year project.
Not sure how you can say that with a straight face.
Based on hype maybe, but we've all seen SO MANY kids that were overhyped simply because they chose to go the Carolina or Duke or any of the other blue blood schools. If you watched Jackson at all his first two years, you'd have seen that his shot simply wasn't consistent enough for the NBA. It's not like he walked onto campus and suddenly didn't have it anymore - he simply never had that consistency until this year (after a lot of hard work in the off season).

BTW, read your follow up about Jackson's appearance. Come on man.
