as we approach this pre-season...there is always a lot of fuss, in fact, our great friend NNfan has begun the madness. for what it's worth, that red grange tourney is an awesome event to attend.
a lot of people dismiss 7s as inconsequential for any number of reasons: it's not real football; winners don't translate to winners; the defenses are not real defenses; and the big one...QB's are different in a real pocket with a real rush.
there are three easy retorts, too: where is the harm; they are good reps; it helps develop young QBs.
As we start rolling into the 7s, i say to the dissent, keep an open mind. If you are an old skooler, remember we love to emphasize the importance of team chemistry...7s help develop or expose it wanting. I also say, don't overlook the overlooked: think of the hyper speed reps the defense gets. For several years, JCA had a few of the best offenses in state; however, they simply could not stop a pass play - literally. Ask JCA fans how many 3rd and 15s we gave up in 4th quarters. I can't say 7s solve those problems, but maybe they give JCA more preseason looks...maybe facing superb passing teams like those at the WWS shootout helps build confidence?
Maybe where everything breaks down is the boisterous bunch that rally cry their 7's triumphs of proof of their teams providing a pending doom of sorts for foes to come...yep, those are very annoying.
I say, the more 7s the better. Develop play calling, give the defense reps, and condition as a team.
