When they say up to 120 days, they mean it. It took 120 days exactly for mine to come in. Had it over a year or so. Got 14 in the clip and one in the tube everywhere I go now.

Seems like every year a bill is introduced in the MS Legislature to shorten the 120 days that is the current max allowed by law. The general consensus is that the Feds are the hold up; DPS can get it done in plenty of time.

Edit for clarification: It isn't a mandated wait.

But in Starkville they only take apps and fingerprint you on Thursdays. I recommend getting there before 9:00 AM. It gets busy after that.

You can still carry (in MS) within the confines of your home and vehicle - you don't need a concealed weapons permit for that. So, if you're not already carrying in your car, you should be. In MS, your car is considered an extension of your home, and under the Castle Doctrine, you're permitted to use deadly force to protect said "Castle" (or anyone within).

Also, though most states recognize MS's concealed carry permit, some states do not. The state of FL issues permits to non-residents, and you can apply on-line (though you do have to mail in a fingerprint card). As of a few years ago, more states recognized FL's permit than MS's. I also think Montana or Wyoming offer a non-resident carry license that is more recognized than MS's. Just something to think about.

Lastly, if you're ever pulled over by the State Patrol, present your carry permit along with your license. It has helped me 3 times get out of a ticket. The trooper is instantly aware that you are (or were at the time of issue) a law-abiding citizen, by virtue of the background check required to get a permit, and your honesty to inform him that there is a weapon in the car or on your person. I've had several troopers thank me for making them aware that a firearm is in the car, and then let me off with a warning. They often want to know what you carry, then want to talk shop. Just an idea. On a related note, I'd be leary of using this idea when being pulled over by city police and hick sheriff departments. I use my own judgement when pulled over, and there are just times that it seems appropriate and times that it doesn't. But the times I've decided to whip it out (for full disclosure's sake), it has worked.

Oh, yeah - and be aware of the places you can and cannot carry once you get your permit. The law states the specific places you can't carry, like schools, polling places, federal buildings, peaceful demonstrations, etc., but you also are prevented from carrying any place that specifically (and openly) states that they do not allow weapons on the premises. If there is a sign that says they don't allow concealed carry, you must abide by their rule, or you'll be in violation of their RULE. However, the good thing about this, is that they can only ask you to leave...you can't (shouldn't) be arrested for violating their rule, should they call the law.

I never leave home without a weapon, and have two in my vehicle at all times; one goes with me when I leave the vehicle.

knew it was only a matter of time. You do know guns are already hard to get, legally, for criminal ilk right? because obama is really going to cut on the criminal gun traffic. He has the power. right.

My question to people who carry guns is, when do you know when to use them? At what point to you pull out your gun and pull the trigger? Are you trained enough to know when it is time to use deadly force? Are you going to quick draw on someone? I am just curious. My opinion has always been, if you are going to carry a gun, you better be ready to use it.

However, I am the son of a Marine officer and veteran (retired after 26 years), and so have been raised to respect firearms and how to handle them in various situations. I have also attended several LE-sponsored classes regarding firearms. I wouldn't carry one if I wasn't properly trained and confident in my ability to make the right decisions on when it is appropriate to use one.

I don't think that there is a "right'" answer to your question, though...whether one has LE experience or not. The "LAW" states that deadly force is suitable when there is a felony being committed against you, or someone else. That's quite vague! Generally, in the gun-toting community, including LE, the only situation in which you should use deadly force is when your life, or someone else's life, is in danger. I think that's a good standard.

I hope that my life is never in danger, and I hope that I'm never present when someone else's life is in danger. However, I am confident that I could react appropriately if I'm ever in that situation. I'm not confident simply because I read Soldier of Fortune (which I don't) or went out and bought a gun and can hit a beer can from 5 feet away. Rather, I'm confident because I was raised around weapons, trained to use them and taught to respect them. Given that I'm ever presented with a situation in which deadly force is suitable, I have no doubt that I would respond appropriately. And, I might add, that I hope I'm never faced with such a decision, and I'm confident that I'd never use deadly force unless it is a last resort. But I might also add that if I'm ever faced with such a situation, may God have mercy on the individual on whom such force is intended.

when they make it equally as tough for criminals to get their guns. Otherwise, any more restrictions will favor the thugs and punish (i.e. takes rights away from) law-abiding citizens.

Many people who have carry permits are "gun people". Some are not. Gun people do alot of reading and researching about what they can and can't do regarding a gun in a selfdefense situation. Thankfully, in many states, because of a rise in home invasions, rape, murder, etc. laws have been changed in a way to slant toward the law abiding citizen in the case of a self defense shooting. You would probably be surprised at the number of people who, unless the bad guy gets the drop on them, will have a huge advantage over a typical street thug in a gunfight, due to the fact that they train quite a bit, but more importantly, know how to train. Just plop down a few dollars and you can go learn the techniques from former delta, force recon marines, and seals. Pay an offduty cop $50 for a couple of hours of learning to align your sites. Or, pay $400 for two days of gunfighting with a special ops guy. You just have to immerse yourself in the gun world.</p>

Real gun slingers are just born knowing whose head to blow off and whose head to just graze. I don't need to pay someone $400 to learn how to draw on someone who has to hold their pants up when they walk down the street.

Yes, I'm considered to be quite liberal with many of my political views, the 2nd Amendment not being one of them. But your "Liberal" title doesn't make sense in light of your comments.

Perhaps what you meant: some people know all the info, but don't practice or train with the information that's in their heads. Is that what you were saying? If so, I assure you that I'm not only an 'intellectual' on this. Don't you think it's appropriate to be well-versed in every aspect of this issue (even the "liberal's" side of it)? After all, it's not a light subject, and I think the more information you have in your head...and are able to put to use...the better of you'll be...

See my response to the other poster.
